The Oscars

I am an unapologetic tart for the oscars. I stay up to watch it live even though it's on in the UK at some ridiculous hour, I do Oscars picks with willing companions, I even tolerate Joan Rivers for an evening (though no red carpet this year :( . I have on occasion watched it twice. Am I insane?

Nordicskillz (Nordicskillz), Friday, 21 March 2003 10:53 (twenty-three years ago)

You had me until the end. Why did you watch it twice?

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Friday, 21 March 2003 11:07 (twenty-three years ago)

I...don't know.

Nordicskillz (Nordicskillz), Friday, 21 March 2003 11:13 (twenty-three years ago)

OK just saw backslaps ? check. red carpets ? still not sure. tearful speeches ? we'll see.

sorry

Nordicskillz (Nordicskillz), Friday, 21 March 2003 12:39 (twenty-three years ago)

Never mind. We'll do it twice in honour of your Oscar watching skeelz.

N. (nickdastoor), Friday, 21 March 2003 13:13 (twenty-three years ago)

What celebs are not turning up this year, and which ones are going to turn up wearing (probably) white ribbons and embarrass everybody including themselves?

Gatinha (rwillmsen), Saturday, 22 March 2003 23:51 (twenty-three years ago)

The Oscars are very positively dud. Just a big load of mutual back-slapping, and most of the frocks look *crap*.

ChristineSH (chrissie1068), Sunday, 23 March 2003 00:31 (twenty-three years ago)

nine months pass...
It's ...almost that time again. I have something fun planned...

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Thursday, 8 January 2004 19:13 (twenty-two years ago)

(The ceremony has been moved forward to February as of this year)

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Thursday, 8 January 2004 19:13 (twenty-two years ago)

(and you planned that?)

Huckleberry Mann (Horace Mann), Thursday, 8 January 2004 19:21 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm totally with you, Adam. I'm a total sucker for the Oscars, and a lot of my movie-dork friends are, too. (Brian, who made the comment about Northfork, regularly sends out predictions by e-mail; we usually have a big party on Oscar night.) I haven't been tracking it this year as much as I have in years past -- partly because Zeusefer's site (which was brilliant) doesn't seem to be in effect this year. But I still look forward to the ceremony as much as ever.

jaymc (jaymc), Thursday, 8 January 2004 19:22 (twenty-two years ago)

Yay for Brian!

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Thursday, 8 January 2004 19:23 (twenty-two years ago)

I think it makes sense for the ceremony to be in February now -- with Golden Globes and critics' awards coming into greater prominence, the Oscars have begun to feel a little anticlimactic. At the same time, I'm a bit disappointed because they were often around my birthday in late March, and Oscar parties doubled as birthday parties.

jaymc (jaymc), Thursday, 8 January 2004 19:25 (twenty-two years ago)

Yay for Brian!

Dude, I need to introduce you two.

jaymc (jaymc), Thursday, 8 January 2004 19:25 (twenty-two years ago)

I think people should give each other presents on Oscar Day. And we should have the day off school as well.

Huckleberry Mann (Horace Mann), Thursday, 8 January 2004 19:26 (twenty-two years ago)

Horace, I'm recommending that the Academy put you forward for Best Canadian Music Writer In A Supporting Comedic Role. Make sure you wear something nice for Joan Rivers.

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Thursday, 8 January 2004 19:28 (twenty-two years ago)

The irony is that Sean Penn should have won an Oscar way back when he played Spiccoli, not for any of the stuff he did in Mystic River or 21g!

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Thursday, 8 January 2004 19:32 (twenty-two years ago)

Also, let me take this opportunity to mention The Falcon And The Snowman:

The Falcon And The Snowman.

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Thursday, 8 January 2004 19:33 (twenty-two years ago)

Is it wrong that I still think of Spicoli almost every time I see Sean Penn in a movie?

jaymc (jaymc), Thursday, 8 January 2004 19:34 (twenty-two years ago)

Is Theron for Monster a lock?

Huckleberry Mann (Horace Mann), Thursday, 8 January 2004 19:35 (twenty-two years ago)

For win? No. For nomination? Yes.

jaymc (jaymc), Thursday, 8 January 2004 19:37 (twenty-two years ago)

Is it wrong that I still think of Spicoli almost every time I see Sean Penn in a movie?

Well, it's not as bad as lusting over Drew Barrymore in ET...

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Thursday, 8 January 2004 19:38 (twenty-two years ago)

if the ceremony is in february now (which is good) the nominations must be coming very soon.

jed_ (jed), Thursday, 8 January 2004 19:39 (twenty-two years ago)

Yes, I know!

When, I wonder?

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Thursday, 8 January 2004 19:40 (twenty-two years ago)

February the 29th actually - does this mean they are every 4 years now?

jed_ (jed), Thursday, 8 January 2004 19:40 (twenty-two years ago)

as opposed to four years long!

Huckleberry Mann (Horace Mann), Thursday, 8 January 2004 19:41 (twenty-two years ago)

Nominations are still a few weeks away, I think. I believe that part of the reason they moved it up was to cut down on the time between nominations and the ceremony -- like 4 weeks instead of 6.

jaymc (jaymc), Thursday, 8 January 2004 19:42 (twenty-two years ago)

January 2, 2004: Nominations ballots mailed.
January 17, 2004: Nominations polls close 5 p.m. PST.
January 27, 2004: Nominations announced 5:30 a.m. PST, Samuel Goldwyn Theater.

jaymc (jaymc), Thursday, 8 January 2004 19:44 (twenty-two years ago)

cripes, I should check my mailbox.

Huckleberry Mann (Horace Mann), Thursday, 8 January 2004 19:44 (twenty-two years ago)

Shit, that's no time at all! We better start getting ready - Does anyone know a good stylist? Mine is in St Kitts until the middle of next month.

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Thursday, 8 January 2004 19:46 (twenty-two years ago)

(x-p)

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Thursday, 8 January 2004 19:46 (twenty-two years ago)

To follow up on the Theron comment -- Naomi Watts has been winning just as many Best Actress awards from critics. There's also speculation that Diane Keaton could win on the basis of the sentimental vote.

jaymc (jaymc), Thursday, 8 January 2004 19:47 (twenty-two years ago)

Hey, we should have our own Oscar predictions here!

jaymc (jaymc), Thursday, 8 January 2004 19:51 (twenty-two years ago)

I was planning on doing the Yahoo Oscar picks on ILX if anyone is interested...it's a lot of fun.

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Thursday, 8 January 2004 19:52 (twenty-two years ago)

I don't know anything about that; tell me more.

jaymc (jaymc), Thursday, 8 January 2004 19:55 (twenty-two years ago)

Please make sure to post your predictions. I lose our office Oscar poll every single year because I A) never see any movies B) have the worst blind-guess skills. Y'all can help me cheat.

Jeanne Fury (Jeanne Fury), Thursday, 8 January 2004 19:57 (twenty-two years ago)

It's kind of a Fantasy League for the Oscars. Everyone picks in each category and gets points for correct prediction. The winner may bask in the glory of seeing their name atop a computer-generated league table.

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Thursday, 8 January 2004 19:58 (twenty-two years ago)

I really DO think Sean Penn will win this year. I know that this is pretty much consensus and probably tempting fate, but it would be nice to hear a speech from him. Even better if he cries, because he looks like a baby when he does.

I would like Russell Crowe and Renee Zellweger to win, and I am not generally a fan of either.

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Thursday, 8 January 2004 20:02 (twenty-two years ago)

Who else will be nominated in the leading actor/actress categories?

Jude and Nicole?

Spellbound will win something, I expect.

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Thursday, 8 January 2004 20:03 (twenty-two years ago)

I don't know, didn't Sean Penn go to Iraq about a year ago and french kiss Saddam Hussein for 60 Minutes? Or maybe I'm misinterpreting the No Sping Zone again. But don't you think the O'Reilly Factor could seriously work against Penn?
Cuz doesn't Bill O'Liely OWN Hollywood?

Huckleberry Mann (Horace Mann), Thursday, 8 January 2004 20:04 (twenty-two years ago)

Heh, there is an article in one of the local weeklies here that suggests that Sean Penn's two recent roles are "apologies" for his behaviour over Iraq and that, in a way, he is the conscience of America in 21 Grams and Mystic River for seeking vengeance and kind of getting away with it but building his own coffin in the process or something...

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Thursday, 8 January 2004 20:07 (twenty-two years ago)

Which I guess isn't an apology as such. Whatever, the East Bay Express sucks.

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Thursday, 8 January 2004 20:07 (twenty-two years ago)

but didn't he make those movies BEFORE going to Iraq?

Huckleberry Mann (Horace Mann), Thursday, 8 January 2004 20:08 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm psyched! we have a party every year and a big betting pool, which I've won 1.5 times!

s1ocki (slutsky), Thursday, 8 January 2004 20:11 (twenty-two years ago)

oh I guess we have to wait until the noms, huh?

Huckleberry Mann (Horace Mann), Thursday, 8 January 2004 20:11 (twenty-two years ago)

Once I placed quite well in the Reel.com Oscar thingy, which gave you $10 grand and based on odds yada yada and I put everything I had on Michael Caine in supporting (on a hit tip from Ebert!) and he was like 5-1 odds but one other longer shot won so I didn't even place in the top 50.

Leee Smith (Leee), Thursday, 8 January 2004 20:13 (twenty-two years ago)

I think the only two locks for Actor are Sean Penn and Bill Murray. Some other possibilities include Jude Law, Russell Crowe, Tom Cruise, Ben Kingsley, and Johnny Depp.

In addition to Theron, Watts, and Keaton (who are probably all locks), look out for Nicole Kidman, Scarlett Johansson, Uma Thurman, and Jennifer Connelly.

Spellbound, if I recall correctly, was nominated for Best Doc last year. Eligible films this year that have gotten widespread attention: Capturing the Friedmans, The Fog of War, and Bus 174.

jaymc (jaymc), Thursday, 8 January 2004 20:14 (twenty-two years ago)

behaviour over iraq?

whats that?

jed_ (jed), Thursday, 8 January 2004 20:14 (twenty-two years ago)

Man, Bus 174 looks great.

I didn't know that about Spellbound.

I forgot about Johnny Depp! That would be fun.

So would Bill Murray even if I didn't like Lost In Translation.

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Thursday, 8 January 2004 20:16 (twenty-two years ago)

but didn't he make those movies BEFORE going to Iraq?

God, I hate how every artwork that's been released in the last 9 months has been called a metaphor for the war in Iraq/U.S. imperialism, etc.

jaymc (jaymc), Thursday, 8 January 2004 20:16 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm going to let someone else address Nichole's last post, which I can't even begin to fathom.

Needs to be clearer? Fine, I'll try again: Other than a few TV directing credits, Tarantino started the main thrust of his directing career with Resevoir Dogs, which actually HAD a flowing story, so the violence wasn't fully gratuitous. Based on that film's success, each of his successive stories kept a similar pattern: whip out the guns and blast away to solve a problem (in KB's case it was swords, but that's splitting hairs) or so a character can express how bad-ass they are.

Based on Kill Bill's box-office success, tis evident his blood and gore formula works for most of the viewing audience, who prolly relate to it on some level. However, this doesn't make the films any more watchable. {Again, tis just me]

Nichole Graham (Nichole Graham), Thursday, 15 January 2004 22:18 (twenty-two years ago)

Have you ever seen an anime film, Nichole?

Indeedy. However, ask how many of them I actually liked (or remember), Master P.

Nichole Graham (Nichole Graham), Thursday, 15 January 2004 22:20 (twenty-two years ago)

Also, have you ever seen "Jackie Brown"?

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 15 January 2004 22:22 (twenty-two years ago)

I actually see Emma Thompson as being in the 6-10 group. She probably won't get a nod, but at this point she's probably as good a bet as Shohreh or Keisha.

Really? Maybe I've been looking at different prognosticators than you have. Actually, I'd agree that she could be as likely as Keisha Castle-Hughes, but that's because I don't think she has much of a shot, either. But I think Aghdashloo does.

Let's see if I can do a Top 10 candidates for Supporting Actress: 1. Renee Zellweger 2. Patricia Clarkson 3. Holly Hunter 4. Marcia Gay Harden 5. Maria Bello 6. Shohreh Aghdashloo 7. Hope Davis 8. Scarlett Johansson ...

Actually, you know what? I think that's it. I think all other candidates are out of contention. I thought about adding Laura Linney and maybe Julie Walters, but they seem like such long shots at this point. Same goes for Thompson and Castle-Hughes, as far as I'm concerned.

jaymc (jaymc), Thursday, 15 January 2004 22:29 (twenty-two years ago)

Can you tell I'm not getting ANY work done today?

jaymc (jaymc), Thursday, 15 January 2004 22:38 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah, I probably just took Damien Bona (author of the Inside Oscar books) at his word when he suggested on an Oscar discussion board that Emma Thompson was his dark horse nomination pick of the year. Of course, mine is Uma Thurman, and I'm guessing neither will make it. Hell, the last time I nailed a dark horse candidate was Ethan Hawke in '01.

And it's probably telling that you bring up Reservoir Dogs, Nichole, which is SO the barometer in telling people's opinions on Tarantino. I've yet to find someone who loved BOTH Reservoir Dogs AND Tarantino's last two films. Reservoir Dogs is the only Tarantino film I litterally can't stand... as in I think it's perhaps one of the worst movies of 1992... which was a particularly awful year...

Eric H. (Eric H.), Friday, 16 January 2004 00:32 (twenty-two years ago)

I've yet to find someone who loved BOTH Reservoir Dogs AND Tarantino's last two films.

Uh, hi.

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Friday, 16 January 2004 00:40 (twenty-two years ago)

Equally? Damn, you're hardcore!

Eric H. (Eric H.), Friday, 16 January 2004 01:11 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah, I only saw Reservoir once but wasn't too keen on it. I've liked the other three a good bit, though.

Eric, where do you go for Oscar tips, besides just paying attention to all the precursor awards and nominations? Around this time of year, I'm checking Oscar Watch and The Film Experience every few days or so.

jaymc (jaymc), Friday, 16 January 2004 02:31 (twenty-two years ago)

The Film Experience is the best. As far as more interactive discourse, though, I've been known to stop by at the Unofficial Academy Awards Discussion Board ev'r now and again. Probably the most popular is GoldDerby, but the fanboyishness of the site ("Sean Astin will WIN THE FUCKING AWARDS!!!!") ensures that lurking is all I'll do there, mostly.

Eric H. (Eric H.), Friday, 16 January 2004 03:03 (twenty-two years ago)

The only Tarantino-related film I haven't liked is "From Dusk 'Til Dawn", largely because of the stupid stupid plot.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Friday, 16 January 2004 14:56 (twenty-two years ago)

what did people think of naomi watts in the movie she has been nomintaed for (I ask bcz I watched the remake of the ring last sunday)?

has bill murray won an oscar before?

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Friday, 16 January 2004 15:06 (twenty-two years ago)

No, not even nominated.

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Friday, 16 January 2004 15:08 (twenty-two years ago)

I liked 21 Grams and think Watts' performance is certainly nomination-worthy.

jaymc (jaymc), Friday, 16 January 2004 15:13 (twenty-two years ago)

Not my favorite female performance of the year, but up there.

jaymc (jaymc), Friday, 16 January 2004 15:14 (twenty-two years ago)

I should say here that my tastes and Oscars run on two separate rail lines. I haven't seen much, but my favorite performances of the year included Casey Afflect (Gerry), Mania Akbari (Ten) and Chiaki Kuriyama (Kill Bill).

Eric H. (Eric H.), Friday, 16 January 2004 15:39 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah, my favorite female performance of the year was Zooey Deschanel in All the Real Girls.

jaymc (jaymc), Friday, 16 January 2004 16:38 (twenty-two years ago)

Oscar predictions I half-wrote.

Eric H. (Eric H.), Tuesday, 20 January 2004 10:51 (twenty-two years ago)

Bafta Nominations

jed_ (jed), Tuesday, 20 January 2004 13:38 (twenty-two years ago)

My own mild differences in predictions from the article are:

PICTURE: instead of Lost in Translation, I suspect it will be In America
DIRECTOR: Jim Sheridan instead of Peter Weir
ACTOR: Paddy Considine instead of Jude Law
ACTRESS: Uma Thurman instead of Nicold Kidman (wishful thinking, surely)
S.ACTOR: Peter Saarsgard instead of Ken Watanabe
S.ACTRESS: Shorheh Aghdashloo instead of Marcia Gay Harden

Eric H. (Eric H.), Tuesday, 20 January 2004 13:48 (twenty-two years ago)

Eric, why do you still think that In America will be rewarded?

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 20 January 2004 16:15 (twenty-two years ago)

It just seems a lot more Academy friendly than Lost in Translation, that's all.

Eric H. (Eric H.), Tuesday, 20 January 2004 17:07 (twenty-two years ago)

It does. It has the basquiat vance factor which the academy loves.

El Diablo Robotico (Nicole), Tuesday, 20 January 2004 18:01 (twenty-two years ago)

I mean, I agree with you that In America is more likely than Lost in Translation -- but I still think it'll be Master and Comamnder (in which case, Weir hangs on). And Law seems much more likely than Considine.

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 20 January 2004 18:08 (twenty-two years ago)

Sorry to belabor that point. But also, you confused me because of this from upthread:

In America
Paddy Constantine, In America
Samantha Morton, In America

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 20 January 2004 18:15 (twenty-two years ago)

Yes, I waffle a lot.

Do you really think the actors' branch (the most sizable of all of them) will sit still for four epics in the Best Picture category? I can't remember the last time that happened.

Eric H. (Eric H.), Tuesday, 20 January 2004 18:37 (twenty-two years ago)

K-blimey, just noticed the Rza and Kevin Shields both nominated for BAFTAs (but ignored for Golden Globes, in favour of the usual suspects)

P.S. I'm glad this thread exists: some ppl are clearly even more obsessed than me by these nomination things.

Jeff W (zebedee), Tuesday, 20 January 2004 18:52 (twenty-two years ago)

It would be funny to see Ned win a bafta.

El Diablo Robotico (Nicole), Tuesday, 20 January 2004 18:56 (twenty-two years ago)

Woohoo! I'm all dolled up and ready to go.

The only Tarantino-related film I haven't liked is "From Dusk 'Til Dawn", largely because of the stupid stupid plot.

...you watched that for the plot.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 20 January 2004 19:21 (twenty-two years ago)

So, I suppose the most dignified-looking Doc line-up would be this:

Balseros
Bus 174
Capturing the Friedmans
The Fog of War
My Architect

Who wants to bet it will end up looking more like this:

Charlie: The Life and Art of Charles Chaplin
Heir to an Executioner
Inheritance: A Fisherman's Story
My Flesh and Blood
The Lost Boys of Sudan

Well, I suppose Capturing the Friedmans is probably high enough on everyone's radar to get into the final five, but it can't possibly win.

Eric H. (Eric H.), Tuesday, 20 January 2004 19:32 (twenty-two years ago)

...you watched that for the plot.

No, I watched it for the vampires, but when they showed up they were butt-stupid and boring.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 20 January 2004 19:37 (twenty-two years ago)

Okay, sanity returns here.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 20 January 2004 19:38 (twenty-two years ago)

Eric, I know the critical buzz is very high on Bus 174 -- what do you see preventing it from getting nominated? Or did I just answer my own question?

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 20 January 2004 19:39 (twenty-two years ago)

is the fog of war eligible for nomination? didn't it not open anywhere until January?

anthony kyle monday (akmonday), Tuesday, 20 January 2004 19:41 (twenty-two years ago)

I really have no clue as to what makes a doc eligible. For all I know or suspect, there could be some sort of registration fee.

jaymc, yep you answered your own question, mostly. I would only add that the doc committee (or whatever they're called) seems to strongly prefer movies with uplifting themes...

Eric H. (Eric H.), Tuesday, 20 January 2004 19:45 (twenty-two years ago)

Kyle, The Fog of War opened in NYC and LA in late December.

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 20 January 2004 19:48 (twenty-two years ago)

I just checked the AMPAS site, and it doesn't look like the eligibility rules for documentary features are that much different than for regular features.

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 20 January 2004 19:54 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh, wait, with one exception: "To be eligible for award consideration for the 2003 awards year, a documentary film must qualify (within two years of the film’s completion date) between October 1, 2002 and August 31, 2003."

So I guess I don't understand why Fog of War is eligible, then.

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 20 January 2004 20:06 (twenty-two years ago)

In preparation for the nominations which are just a few short days away, the Writers' Guild nominations (which, like the DGA, are moderately hindered as a prognosticator by the fact that they only nominate individuals in the guild):

ORIGINAL
Bend it Like Beckham (Gurinder Chadha, Paul Mayeda Berges and Guljit Bindra)
Dirty Pretty Things (Steven Knight)
In America (Jim, Kirsten and Naomi Sheridan)
Lost in Translation (Sofia Coppola)
The Station Agent (Tom McCarthy)

Eric H. (Eric H.), Thursday, 22 January 2004 17:58 (twenty-two years ago)

... they're also hindered by the fact that they nominated Bend It Like Beckham.

Eric H. (Eric H.), Thursday, 22 January 2004 17:59 (twenty-two years ago)

Jeez, if you thought last night's Golden Globes were boring, take a peek at the unadventurous Razzie line-up.

Eric H. (Eric H.), Monday, 26 January 2004 15:45 (twenty-two years ago)

I was thinking last night while watching the Globes that although the Oscar nominations are a bit harder to predict than usual, the actual winners seem like foregone conclusions already. Can you imagine the Oscar not going to last night's big six? (Lord of the Rings, Peter Jackson, Sean Penn, Charlize Theron, Tim Robbins, Renee Zellweger)

jaymc (jaymc), Monday, 26 January 2004 15:54 (twenty-two years ago)

I don't understand why, if the Razzies are bringing back the fine old oscar tradition of nominating actors for a years work, they only nominate Anthony Anderson for one film.

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Monday, 26 January 2004 16:04 (twenty-two years ago)

If the tepid audience response to Zellweger's win is any indication, Best Supporting Actress might be primed for an upset.

Eric H. (Eric H.), Monday, 26 January 2004 16:10 (twenty-two years ago)

i think that best supporting actress is really up in the air, and i think that keatons win might make a win on the big night, and for sure means at least a nomination.

Can you imagine the Oscar not going to last night's big six? (Lord of the Rings, Peter Jackson, Sean Penn, Charlize Theron, Tim Robbins, Renee Zellweger)

I was more amused by the Office winning over Sex in the City: who knew anyone in the Academy actually appreciated dry humour? I could almost swear I could hear the audience going, "Who the hell IS that?"
