jesus sodding christ. it's going to be a thousand monkeys at a thousand typewriters next season.

matthew james (matthew james), Friday, 21 March 2003 12:26 (twenty-three years ago)

I suggested this this morning to Vicky as he was the only available manager who wasn't O'leary! Apart from staying too long at Sunderland though he's ok.

Me and jonnie were talking this morning about whether any manager had managed two relegated teams in one season, I thought maybe Dave Bassett.

chris (chris), Friday, 21 March 2003 12:29 (twenty-three years ago)

There's also George Graham or Howard Wilkinson... d'oh!

Managing Leeds would appear to be the worst career move ever.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Friday, 21 March 2003 12:37 (twenty-three years ago)

Chris, you forgot about Burley! who is available.

DJ Martian (djmartian), Friday, 21 March 2003 12:38 (twenty-three years ago)

good god don't talk of leeds' relegation. that'd be too much. next season, though, paul hart and strachan look possible. if strach's a sentimental type, anyway - leeds will go into next season, on current squads, better on paper than southampton, with a better academy too. fucking reid, though. o'leary's been saying he wouldn't mind another go at leeds, open arms! so long as ridsdale does the honourable thing and let's someone else have a go. stubborn fool.

hahahahhaahhahaahhahahahahahahahahahahahahahah

Matt DC (Matt DC), Friday, 21 March 2003 12:46 (twenty-three years ago)

gareth, aren't you from bradford?

matthew james (matthew james), Friday, 21 March 2003 12:47 (twenty-three years ago)

could be a mistake. club needs a lift, i don't think having reid as your manager will perk anyone up.

weasel diesel (K1l14n), Friday, 21 March 2003 12:47 (twenty-three years ago)

yes i am from bradford! but i'm a huddersfield town fan. (and we're about to lose out club maybe!)

ok, schadenfreude over. i dont know why reid has been chosen, that seems madness, if it just till end of season may as well have stayed with venables. so, who is he keeping the seat warm for anyway? burley? strachan is outside bet i guess, even o'leary as you say. the thing is, theres still a core of good players at leeds, even with the sell offs you shouldnt be in this mess

gareth (gareth), Friday, 21 March 2003 12:51 (twenty-three years ago)

Strachan has said that he'd only leave the hamsters for either Manyoo or Leeds so you never know....

chris (chris), Friday, 21 March 2003 12:52 (twenty-three years ago)

there's enough skill left in the team - the problem with losing so many players is that those good players left don't always know what to do with the ball, their old boys being gone. midfield's empty, soit's invariably robinson/mills to kewell. no other way upfield. i think with a proper summer of training, and a competent manager who doesn't switch tactics minute to minute and refuse to play quality players in position (only kewell left in midfield? alright, let's take him out of midfield).
eddie gray and brian kidd would have been infinitley preferable to reid, though.

matthew james (matthew james), Friday, 21 March 2003 12:56 (twenty-three years ago)

Please allow me to catch up. Are we talking fact here? Has the Venerable Terry just added one more to his growing collection of large thick hessian-like bags of the type traditionally used by Santa Claus?

Fred Nerk, Friday, 21 March 2003 13:25 (twenty-three years ago)

venables is gone. reid is hot favourite to replace him. i think venables left by "mutual consent" ahem, but i'm not sure.

weasel diesel (K1l14n), Friday, 21 March 2003 13:38 (twenty-three years ago)

haha, mutual consent="fuck you", "no, fuck you"

gareth (gareth), Friday, 21 March 2003 13:47 (twenty-three years ago)

"You're fired venables!" "OK." = mutual consent.

weasel diesel (K1l14n), Friday, 21 March 2003 13:55 (twenty-three years ago)

I suspect Gareth's version is probably closer to the truth.

I also suspect that Leeds are about to sell Harry Kewell, being the straw that broke the camels back.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Friday, 21 March 2003 13:58 (twenty-three years ago)

I always thought the introduction of camels was a non-starter anyway.

N. (nickdastoor), Friday, 21 March 2003 14:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Thanks. I think I can guess from here. Terry Venereals and the Leeds head honchos had a 'full and frank exchange of views' as a result of which Terry realised it was time to get the hell out.

Matt, where's Harry supposed to be going?

Fred Nerk, Friday, 21 March 2003 14:01 (twenty-three years ago)

Matt, where's Harry supposed to be going?

Anywhere that offers Leeds a tangerine and a shiny sixpence, at this rate.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Friday, 21 March 2003 14:02 (twenty-three years ago)

I suspect HK has refused a new contract and Ridsdale is desperate to get the full whack back for him.

In the circumstances maybe Reid is the correct person for the job (someone who'll get the players to dig in a bit). And of course delaying the decision until the close season means they can make a permanent appointment knowing whether it's a re-build or a promotion that's needed.

I have more important football matters to worry about than what's happening at my second club...

Tim (Tim), Friday, 21 March 2003 14:02 (twenty-three years ago)

This war business is just a smokescreen to distract attention from the fact of both teams from Porto getting to the semifinals of the UEFA cup.

In the Big Cup, the Real - Barça semifinal should be a classic.

http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport2/hi/football/teams/l/leeds_united/2872253.stm

he's only interim manager, but maybe if he does a decent job they'll keep him on...

weasel diesel (K1l14n), Friday, 21 March 2003 14:05 (twenty-three years ago)

I think Reid will keep them up (unfortunaetly), and Hart would be a decent choice for next season.

The most amusing part of this is that Venables will presumably be taking his traditional massive pay-off. Leeds are obviously in deep financial shit, but I guess it's too much to hope for that TV will bleed them completely dry in the way he did Palace.

James Ball (James Ball), Friday, 21 March 2003 14:09 (twenty-three years ago)

well as a leeds fan i was about to post but James Ball has summed it up perfectly (except for the unfortunately).

Hart to come in which will be a very positive and hopefully relaxing influence on the club. We will be skint for ages and we will be a mid table team for a while to come as i would be surprised that harry stays now there is further turmoil at the club - but then is that a bad thing that we cash in, he is injured for large parts of the season and if Hart comes we could dip in to the pot which is cash strapped forest.

james (james), Friday, 21 March 2003 14:13 (twenty-three years ago)

They should have gone for Howard Wilkinson, as a kind of statement of intent.

Leeds are one of those teams that you have a moral obligation to despise. I'm fuckin' stoked 'cos Sheffield United beat them twice, thereby destroying their season. After the first match their 'fans' responded by smashing up as much of the ground as they could, for which the Leeds directors promptly released a statement blaming Sheffield United...let's hope they go down, there's still hope!

Gatinha (rwillmsen), Friday, 21 March 2003 14:18 (twenty-three years ago)

couldn't see leeds going down. sunderland, wba and bolton, i'd say. did anyone see "the premiership" on itv the other night, and they hadn't shown the leeds game yet, and big ron starts saying "leeds aren't out of relegation trouble yet are they?" and there's a look of horror on des' face as ron starts prattling on about the trouble leeds are in, and then he cuts in "but we haven't seen how they did TODAY, have we?"

weasel diesel (K1l14n), Friday, 21 March 2003 14:23 (twenty-three years ago)

ha our season was destroyed before it started

james (james), Friday, 21 March 2003 14:24 (twenty-three years ago)

Wilkinson did absolutely Tony Adams' sister at Sunderland, his numbers were even worse than Reid's.

Fred Nerk, Friday, 21 March 2003 14:31 (twenty-three years ago)

i'm quite hopeful of kewell staying. he and smith and robinson have had alright seasons, and teams without big players front to back have been doing well (everton, soton).
paul hart wants to leave forest whether they do plae playoffs or not, i saw somewhere today. please god don't let us have seven years of reid.

matthew james (matthew james), Friday, 21 March 2003 15:12 (twenty-three years ago)

The impression you get from the papers in Oz is that Harry the K isn't quite as apathetic about playing for Australia as he was a couple of years ago and he is more willing to make an issue of it.

Fred Nerk, Friday, 21 March 2003 15:18 (twenty-three years ago)

Sadly, I think I can think of someone who managed two clubs that got relegated in the same season - didn't Ian Holloway manage this in the season he went from Bristol Rovers to QPR two years back?
