I registered last month, and I swear I checked off "Independent" but I the Board of Elections enrolled me as a Democrat. Hmm.

From a voter's standpoint, declaring your party doesn't matter much in the presidential election, but depending on which state you register in, it affects what you can do for presidential primaries. In California, you can vote for candidates from whatever party you cotton to, but if it's outside your registered party, it doesn't actually count, the reason being that They don't want (to use an entirely hypothetical ex.) Demos voting in 2000 en masse for McCain to keep Bush from getting the Repub nom.
