----------

david james should be let nowhere near an england goal. alan smith would be a much better pick than vassel, maybe it's venables playing him midfield or his one-game suspension, but he's th ekind of battler the current england can do with after some recent piss-poors.

based on their performances today in particular, and what i've seen of them in general, danny mills and emile heskey are two of the worst players ever

although our (ireland's) squad includes kevin kilbane,so i'm hardly in a position to talk
anyone know why beattie isn't in the squad?

robin (robin), Sunday, 23 March 2003 23:31 (twenty-three years ago)

Liechtenstein 0 England 2 (if it does go ahead)
England 0 Turkey 0

oh joy. come on lads, surprise me - and by that i don't mean by losing.

stevem (blueski), Sunday, 23 March 2003 23:33 (twenty-three years ago)

I'm worried about the forwards. I would hope our midfield and defence could dominate Lichtenstein and possibly even get the best of Turkey, but with an out of form Owen, having seen Heskey look less than impressive against Celtic, with Rooney having hardly played in the last few months and his lack of experience, and Vassell and Jeffers are very far from convincing me at the top level. For the Lichtenstein game I hope the spare midfield place (certain to be Beckham, Gerard and Scholes, if they are all well) goes to someone attacking, either Dyer or maybe even a third forward (Heskey on the left again?), but against Turkey I'd be inclined towards someone a little more of a genuine midfielder - probably Jenas to be honest, though I'm not that happy with him there.

defoe and smith are absolute musts and prob beattie too if only to reward form. i hate vassell. also, gareth barry is so unlucky

zemko (bob), Sunday, 23 March 2003 23:40 (twenty-three years ago)

mills can fuck off, yes. and i'm, despite the troubles, a leeds man. but mills has been integreal to pretty much every leeds on-pitch fuck up in the last four games. and heskey's a graceless sod who could fire into the water on the precipice of a great ocean and still pelt into dry land.
beattie was quiet as all hell against australia, though you'd think 30 goals would count for something when you're main competition is fuckin heskey.
owen is in fine form right now, though.

matthew james (matthew james), Sunday, 23 March 2003 23:42 (twenty-three years ago)

i'd forgotten about defoe,he deserves a shot
his goal yesterday was exceptional
i cannot understand why heskey is still getting his game
am i right that he's started most games this season and scored maybe 4 goals, wheras baros has scored six or seven in about 15 games, most as a sub?
if so,whats the story?

robin (robin), Sunday, 23 March 2003 23:54 (twenty-three years ago)

heskey is, i think, a holding attacker, meant to draw defenders away from owen. but defenders largely ignore him because he couldn't hit the back of the net from halfway inside the net.

matthew james (matthew james), Sunday, 23 March 2003 23:57 (twenty-three years ago)

apart from that scraper against the Danes last Summer...

stevem (blueski), Monday, 24 March 2003 00:44 (twenty-three years ago)

and the two against Germany all those moons ago...my point, yeh he's a bit clumsy but he has his moments

stevem (blueski), Monday, 24 March 2003 00:44 (twenty-three years ago)

did i say two? i meant just the one...

stevem (blueski), Monday, 24 March 2003 00:45 (twenty-three years ago)

i bet somewhere in the leage there's someone with more own goals than heskey has proper ones.

matthew james (matthew james), Monday, 24 March 2003 00:51 (twenty-three years ago)

he kind of reminds me of niall quinn
like quinn,he occasionally demonstrates a surprising deftness of touch
i remember quinn played really well against portugal once, and all the portuguese clubs wanted to sign him for far more than he was worth
man city must have thought it was their lucky day
never happened though, they must have sent scouts to his next match

No Michael Tonge?!

No Michael Brown?!?!

Is this just down to some prejudice that Swedish people have against people called Michael?

Gatinha (rwillmsen), Monday, 24 March 2003 02:19 (twenty-three years ago)

excuse my ignorance but who is michael brown?
