I'm at work, and I'm dying to know what the SERIOUS, low-key Oscars are like. If you're watching, please inform. Thanks!

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Monday, 24 March 2003 02:16 (twenty-three years ago)

grouchy

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Monday, 24 March 2003 02:18 (twenty-three years ago)

Steve MArtin is funny, but the crowd's not so into it. Chris Cooper won Best Supporting Actor, which is right and good. No lame editorializing yet.

Aaron A., Monday, 24 March 2003 02:20 (twenty-three years ago)

Someone has just received some prize or other from some blonde lady.

Gatinha (rwillmsen), Monday, 24 March 2003 02:21 (twenty-three years ago)

It's exactly like the non-serious, non-low key Oscars. Lilo and Stich wuz robbed!

Carey (Carey), Monday, 24 March 2003 02:22 (twenty-three years ago)

Steve Martin is pretty funny. I noticed guys laughing more at him than girls were, what was that about? Harrison Ford looks like a right pervert sitting with Calista Flockheart.

So far, both Brendan Fraser and Keanu Reeves have presented, so I guess they wanted to get the "men who should just stand and look good and never speak" segment of the show out of the way early.

Jennifers Connolly and Lopez had on terrible outfits.

Ally (mlescaut), Monday, 24 March 2003 02:23 (twenty-three years ago)

they are NOT low key. i cannot sense any change. Martin even made a point of the lack of difference.

badgerminor, Monday, 24 March 2003 02:23 (twenty-three years ago)

fuck that, Carey! Spirited Away is the best movie I've seen in years!
you haven't even seen it yet!

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Monday, 24 March 2003 02:25 (twenty-three years ago)

Have you seen Lilo and Stitch?

Carey (Carey), Monday, 24 March 2003 02:25 (twenty-three years ago)

Lilo and Stich wuz robbed!

Wh-wh-whu??? Spirited Away winning has been the only good thing that has happened to me this week.

Nicole (Nicole), Monday, 24 March 2003 02:26 (twenty-three years ago)

Carey, unless Lilo And Stitch was the best new movie I've seen since 1999, it doesn't fucking matter.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Monday, 24 March 2003 02:26 (twenty-three years ago)

Wait minute, is Spirited Away the movie I alwasy think is about the horse?

Carey (Carey), Monday, 24 March 2003 02:27 (twenty-three years ago)

Oh and oi! At the risk of sounding terrible, Catherine Zeta Jones! I mean, right on, gain proper weight when preggers, etc, but jesus! She's bigger than my mom was, and my mom had 8lb twins! What the hell has Catherine Zeta Jones got in there, a 5 year old? It's spectacular and awe inspiring!

Ally (mlescaut), Monday, 24 March 2003 02:27 (twenty-three years ago)

I bet she gives good lap sits now.

Carey (Carey), Monday, 24 March 2003 02:28 (twenty-three years ago)

and I can't imagine a little blue gremlin in an Elvis outfit topping the visuals in Spirited Away.

NO!!! That's Spirit: The Adventures of Cinammon or whatever. Spirited Away is anime. and goooooooood.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Monday, 24 March 2003 02:28 (twenty-three years ago)

I liked it when the robot microphone ran away from the boring old LOTR art directors who had spent more than 20 seconds on their speech.

N. (nickdastoor), Monday, 24 March 2003 02:29 (twenty-three years ago)

Sorry - SFX guys.

N. (nickdastoor), Monday, 24 March 2003 02:29 (twenty-three years ago)

Yeah i have a fetish for that little blue gremlin. Probably because I originally thought the movie was about this wacky koala bear that get's stranded in Hawaii.

Carey (Carey), Monday, 24 March 2003 02:29 (twenty-three years ago)

Oh stop arguing about cartoons and make fun of how everyone looks, jesus. Catherine Zeta Jones! She's having a litter! Etc!

Boy, Paul Simon is boring.

Ally (mlescaut), Monday, 24 March 2003 02:29 (twenty-three years ago)

OK, actually that horse movie is caalled Spirit: Stallion of the Cimarron.

You'll love Spirited Away. Trust me, Carey.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Monday, 24 March 2003 02:30 (twenty-three years ago)

I had my picture taken with a 20 ft Stitch, but I'm still glad that Spirited Away won.

Nicole (Nicole), Monday, 24 March 2003 02:30 (twenty-three years ago)

Can Nia Vardalos please go away now?

Nicole (Nicole), Monday, 24 March 2003 02:30 (twenty-three years ago)

instead of running away, the microphones should give the speakers an eletric shock.

"and I want to thank my managerrrYOW!"

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Monday, 24 March 2003 02:31 (twenty-three years ago)

Why is it when people get money they lose weight. What happened to weight being a symbol that you were wealthy? Nia Vardalos you suck! (although you are married to Javier from Felicity)

Carey (Carey), Monday, 24 March 2003 02:32 (twenty-three years ago)

Catherine Zeta Jones (why the hell is she called that anyway - no one is called things like 'Zeta' in Wales?) is having septuplets AND THEY ALL HAVE DIFFERENT FATHERS.

N. (nickdastoor), Monday, 24 March 2003 02:32 (twenty-three years ago)

The swelling music is so tacky.

Carey (Carey), Monday, 24 March 2003 02:33 (twenty-three years ago)

do they have Peter Coyote at a news desk announcing stuff with a headset mic on like last year?

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Monday, 24 March 2003 02:34 (twenty-three years ago)

What's really fucking awesome too bad is that the little feel-gooder that could, My Big Fat Greek Wedding, won't even be mentioned tonight.

Aaron A., Monday, 24 March 2003 02:34 (twenty-three years ago)

What? The jokes are not so hot. (Do you think Jack and Anjelica laughed at the Roman Polanski quip?)

Bizet is sooooo spinning in his grave over that Pepsi commercial. Sweet Jesus, what the hell was that?

Jennifer Lopez was wearing a dress that either Carla, Marla or Darla wore in the Great Muppet Caper

rosemary (rosemary), Monday, 24 March 2003 02:35 (twenty-three years ago)

Sean Connery on his way home from the Capt D's late night menu.

Carey (Carey), Monday, 24 March 2003 02:35 (twenty-three years ago)

and who's singing "Lose Yourself" in Eminem's place? Coolio? Academy Award Nominee Queen Latifah? Will Smith won't do it cause there's a war on.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Monday, 24 March 2003 02:36 (twenty-three years ago)

Catherine Zeta Jones: I'll concur. She was pretty good in Chicago. Who knew she could dance and sing.

Carey (Carey), Monday, 24 March 2003 02:37 (twenty-three years ago)

she's damn sexy until you think about her making out with Michael Douglas. Yick.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Monday, 24 March 2003 02:39 (twenty-three years ago)

Carey looks vaguely like Catherine Zeta-Jones! I forgot! So ya know, folks.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Monday, 24 March 2003 02:39 (twenty-three years ago)

You are the second person to tell me this. But I'm not pregnant.

Carey (Carey), Monday, 24 March 2003 02:40 (twenty-three years ago)

she's damn sexy until you think about her making out with Michael Douglas. Yick.

That's hot too if you're a pervert.

N. (nickdastoor), Monday, 24 March 2003 02:40 (twenty-three years ago)

I once told Mark S. that Michael Douglas was smug like a frozen smurf. I stand by that assessment.

Nicole (Nicole), Monday, 24 March 2003 02:41 (twenty-three years ago)

Sean Connery is the dandy highwayman.

Nicole (Nicole), Monday, 24 March 2003 02:41 (twenty-three years ago)

The worst tattoo I have ever seen was a smurf with a huge penis coming out of his pants. Which reminds me of Michael Douglas now.

Carey (Carey), Monday, 24 March 2003 02:42 (twenty-three years ago)

I've just heard a rumor about Robin Williams doing 'Lose Yourself'.

Gatinha (rwillmsen), Monday, 24 March 2003 02:42 (twenty-three years ago)

any anti-war people speaking out?

robin (robin), Monday, 24 March 2003 02:43 (twenty-three years ago)

The worst tattoo I have ever seen was a smurf with a huge penis coming out of his pants. Which reminds me of Michael Douglas now.

Exactly.

Nicole (Nicole), Monday, 24 March 2003 02:43 (twenty-three years ago)

which reminds you of Douglas, the smurf or his penis? I vote for the latter.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Monday, 24 March 2003 02:44 (twenty-three years ago)

No anti-war people yet. I don't think that Susan Sarandon and Tim Robbins will be giving anything out. So there is one given gone.

Carey (Carey), Monday, 24 March 2003 02:44 (twenty-three years ago)

Renne Zellwegger always looks like she's just eaten lemons, hasn't she any joy? Real joy?

Ally (mlescaut), Monday, 24 March 2003 02:47 (twenty-three years ago)

Decided to ditch the Oscars this year, even though "Lord of the Rings" is up for a few awards. The only thing I can be thankful to this war for is that the bloody glitter and air-kissing had to be turned down a notch.

Nichole Graham (Nichole Graham), Monday, 24 March 2003 02:47 (twenty-three years ago)

Renee Zellweger always looks like that, and her buffness in Chicago was distracting. I kept imaging what it would have been like to have Madonna in her role.

Carey (Carey), Monday, 24 March 2003 02:47 (twenty-three years ago)

Is it just me, or does Renee Zellweger always kind of look like the mom on That 70s Show?

Nicole (Nicole), Monday, 24 March 2003 02:47 (twenty-three years ago)

Was that Peter O'Toole I just saw? Yikes.

rosemary (rosemary), Monday, 24 March 2003 02:49 (twenty-three years ago)

She sounds like her too. I just decided I don't like her. I don't like most of these women. I like the guys. Does this make me bad?

Ally (mlescaut), Monday, 24 March 2003 02:50 (twenty-three years ago)

Spirited Away is godhead and is much better than most other things ever -- including B***y, but I digress.

Let it go Ned.

Nicole (Nicole), Monday, 24 March 2003 04:57 (twenty-three years ago)

ps. Musicals can sukk it

Sean Carruthers (SeanC), Monday, 24 March 2003 04:58 (twenty-three years ago)

I'll second that.

Kim (Kim), Monday, 24 March 2003 04:59 (twenty-three years ago)

Chicago was actually better than most things that have won in previous year (Gladiator, Shakes The Clown in Love). Everyone in it was very very good.

Carey (Carey), Monday, 24 March 2003 04:59 (twenty-three years ago)

Gaudy musicals are the new historical epics.

badgerminor, Monday, 24 March 2003 04:59 (twenty-three years ago)

well that wasnt a bad oscars show at all now was it?

chaki (chaki), Monday, 24 March 2003 05:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Spirited Away is godhead and is much better than most other things ever -- including B***y, but I digress

...Booty?

Why is everyone hating on Gladiator?

Ally (mlescaut), Monday, 24 March 2003 05:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Let it go Ned.

Aw man.

Anyway, LOTR cheated out of rightful victory for the second year in a row = nothing is valid and all is lies. There.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 24 March 2003 05:00 (twenty-three years ago)

If only every Oscars was this mercifully pared down...

Aaron A., Monday, 24 March 2003 05:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Booty?

No, booty has its place.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 24 March 2003 05:01 (twenty-three years ago)

Again, who sang "Lose Yourself"?

Carey (Carey), Monday, 24 March 2003 05:01 (twenty-three years ago)

LOTR even being nominated is a total injustice, Ned. I mean, I enjoyed it and all, but best picture of the year? C'mon now.

Sean Carruthers (SeanC), Monday, 24 March 2003 05:02 (twenty-three years ago)

Phoned my mum after Peter O'Toole was on and she says Renee Zellweger has Nice Girl Blowjob Face: 'you want me to WHAAAAT?'

She is also a hata of Michael Douglas: 'I know he saw that girl - MY GOD SHE MUST WEIGH 200 POUNDS - and ordered her like a fucking pizza.'

suzy (suzy), Monday, 24 March 2003 05:02 (twenty-three years ago)

WHO WILL COME WITH ME AND MAKE A HOLOCAUST FILM???

jm (jtm), Monday, 24 March 2003 05:03 (twenty-three years ago)

diane lane = hubba hubba

mark p (Mark P), Monday, 24 March 2003 05:04 (twenty-three years ago)

LOTR even being nominated is a total injustice, Ned. I mean, I enjoyed it and all, but best picture of the year? C'mon now.

It being the only one of the five nominees I've seen, I have to judge it the best of the lot! :-)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 24 March 2003 05:04 (twenty-three years ago)

And in one post, it is revealed that Suzy and I are sisters.

(psst - there was no performance of Lose Yourself, unless I fell asleep at some 5 minute point)

Ally (mlescaut), Monday, 24 March 2003 05:04 (twenty-three years ago)

Ally, does your mom call all shifty men eg. Michael Douglas 'wieners'? She was saying a lot worse, and funnier too, but then Kate woke up and whined about me being loud and I forgot everything in my annoyance. FOR FUCK'S SAKE IF YOU CAN'T DISS THE OSCARS WITH YOUR MUM AS LOUD AS YOU WANT IN YOUR OWN HOME WHAT'S LEFT?

I think the Holocaust vote bloc and the Hey, I've Shagged A 13-Year-Old Too vote bloc magically came together tonight. Do they FedEx Polanski his award or will they be like 'well, you have to pick it up...'

suzy (suzy), Monday, 24 March 2003 05:15 (twenty-three years ago)

She doesn't really say "wieners" but she definitely has said that thing about him and Catherine Zeta Jones. Oh man does she hate him. He's like her definition of creepy old git.

Ally (mlescaut), Monday, 24 March 2003 05:19 (twenty-three years ago)

chaki (chaki), Monday, 24 March 2003 05:22 (twenty-three years ago)

I was really looking forward to watching Robin Williams perform Lose Yourself when I rewatched the highlights. Damn those fake rumors.

Carey (Carey), Monday, 24 March 2003 05:26 (twenty-three years ago)

read this

CUDDILINESS

chaki (chaki), Monday, 24 March 2003 05:26 (twenty-three years ago)

Heh I remember: Mom said that when she saw CZJ and Queen Latifah standing next to each other, she had to DOUBLE TAKE to distinguish between them.

suzy (suzy), Monday, 24 March 2003 05:29 (twenty-three years ago)

That's really disturbing, that cuddliness thing.

Haha, that's what my mom said too. "She's making Latifah look like Calista Flockheart!" Oh my god, the poor woman is pregnant and we are being so harsh, but REALLY who gains that much weight unless they are having a litter of puppies?

Ally (mlescaut), Monday, 24 March 2003 05:30 (twenty-three years ago)

Well it is her second... surely most normal people gain more weight the second time around, no? I mean she looks matronly in the cell phone ads. Now she's going to look like a Southern Fried Mama.

jm (jtm), Monday, 24 March 2003 05:34 (twenty-three years ago)

I missed it all. I was watching the 8 Mile DVD. Damn, that's a great fucking movie.

Spirited Away was awesome.

That Girl (thatgirl), Monday, 24 March 2003 05:38 (twenty-three years ago)

No dog ever gained that much weight in pursuit of a litter. Maybe she's going for the lead in The Julie Burchill Story.

My mom seems to know a lot about Michael Douglas: 'I remember he was with Brenda Vaccaro first and ran off with that beauty queen who he dumped to be with that huge pregnoid. He should have stuck with Brenda Vaccaro.'

BTW I think boo-ers of Michael Moore were incredibly rude and Far From Heaven (I've never known someone who was up for an Oscar before but I know the cinematographer of that) was robbed on some level.

suzy (suzy), Monday, 24 March 2003 05:38 (twenty-three years ago)

CZJ obviously is someone who doesn't "naturally" have that sickly Hollywood physique so I'm not surprised she looks matronly, but even with that she is VERY big for just having one baby. It's incredible! I am certain she's having twins.

My mom also knows a lot about Michael Douglas, she's very upset by his existance.

Ally (mlescaut), Monday, 24 March 2003 05:41 (twenty-three years ago)

Dude, suzy how do you know Ed Lachman?

jm (jtm), Monday, 24 March 2003 05:43 (twenty-three years ago)

Jimmy, met him six months ago at a dinner for L@rry Cl@rk which went HORRIBLY WRONG (EL also shot Ken Park, the LC film that's not out yet). But because of circumstances and fact that we had to hang out waiting for police etc, 'met' became 'know'.

suzy (suzy), Monday, 24 March 2003 05:52 (twenty-three years ago)

Fucking radical

jm (jtm), Monday, 24 March 2003 05:57 (twenty-three years ago)

Far From Heaven was an incredible film. From all aspects. I'm sad to hear it won nothing.

People who talk about women's weight are loserz. (but damn Q.L. has got some big ass t. . . never mind.)

That Girl (thatgirl), Monday, 24 March 2003 06:06 (twenty-three years ago)

CZJ is as big as a bus, yes. Hit me, bus.

M Matos (M Matos), Monday, 24 March 2003 06:42 (twenty-three years ago)

Well, I think FAT has mutated from a feminist issue into a capitalist one. I'm just as likely to diss fat men: cases where obesity is part and parcel of a medical condition are the exception, not the rule (just as anorexics make up a fraction of the thin). And in the land of the Bloated Voter some light flensing wouldn't go amiss, along with the message that 10 Africans could easily live a well-nourished life on the consumption habits of one Super Sizing American. YUCK.

suzy (suzy), Monday, 24 March 2003 06:58 (twenty-three years ago)

Oh, that dinner with Larry Clark.

What did Adrien Brody say that was so moving?

I only saw a few snatches of this in a bar.

Amateurist (amateurist), Monday, 24 March 2003 07:00 (twenty-three years ago)

What is the other half of Salma Hayek? I know she's Mexican but is she Arabic too? I got into an argument with the last guy I dated over this.

Just read all 310 posts, her other half is Lebanese.

nickn (nickn), Monday, 24 March 2003 07:34 (twenty-three years ago)

highlights for me: matthew mcconaughey trying to keep his shit together, despite telltale psycho stare and jaw set to "gurn" all the way though the ceremony; michael moore's rant; adrien brody winning, and the subsequent sound of a million jaws dropping when he did....and nic cage's totally unfakeable expression of jubilance and delight - now that's a gracious loser.

also all the catherine z-/ weight stuff is really icky and weird. she's pregnant for fuck's sake.

jeanne picot (jeanne picot), Monday, 24 March 2003 11:40 (twenty-three years ago)

I thought CZJ looked powerful, radiant, energised and very beautiful.

Tatyana, Monday, 24 March 2003 12:27 (twenty-three years ago)

And in the land of the Bloated Voter some light flensing wouldn't go amiss, along with the message that 10 Africans could easily live a well-nourished life on the consumption habits of one Super Sizing American. YUCK.

Do I think Americans eat too much? Yes, way too much. (Myself included sometimes, but I live in the food-culture capital of the USA and it'd be a shame not to take advantage of that.) But if Americans eat less, how exactly does that fill the stomachs of starving Africans?

Jody Beth Rosen (Jody Beth Rosen), Monday, 24 March 2003 12:36 (twenty-three years ago)

Hey, where was Paul Hogan this year?

Joe (Joe), Monday, 24 March 2003 13:23 (twenty-three years ago)

who else thinks steve martin has had a nose job ?
he looked like robin willyums in
millenium man (worst film ever obv.)

also despite agreeing with moore, who else thinks that
chris cooper/nicole kidman's subtle war-referencing
talk was dignified thus made it's point
quietly but better ?

nic cage and jack were
sat nxt to each other despite both
being nominated 4 best actor that's
surely unusual ?

this year was bo-ring compared to last year/yr before
even the clips montages were a bit dull.

peter o toole = genuine british legend
the fact that he spoke about all the friends
he'd made/ people he had loved in america
was most moving bit of the show i thought.

do we *really* need that bit every big anniversary
where they line up all the nominations together on stage ?

yep highlights apart from peter o, and moore
were cameron diaz looking stunnin'
(but like phil oakey a bit),
julianne moore looking genuinely
not that arsed all night meaning she knew she
was on a loser for both awards and had decided
to just enjoy, and yep that eminem lift vers.
of lose yourself.

ooh also - the bit where they played a montage of each year's
musical bits, but actually stopped the background music
for the ike hayes shaft theme where it goes 'shaft ! daaaamn right'
then went back to the music. ace !

piscesboy, Monday, 24 March 2003 13:55 (twenty-three years ago)

I've just been debriefing an artist pal about last night and she was whooping at the transcript of Michael Moore's words. It's really odd to see that montage of previous award winners because it looks like a Love Boat/Fantasy Island guest-stars round-up more each year. Nobody you'd really want to see (Katharine Hepburn) turns up, and the '40s actresses that have gone a bit reclusive/Norma Desmond still have the same hairstyles and colours as in their heyday (sheeyit! Jennifer Jones!).

I got up SPECIFICALLY to see Peter O'Toole, who as a crush figure probably led me straight toward the wonderful world of well-spoken, well-read Bowie casualties I later perved over for the rest of my adolescence (and would they show the NO PRISONERS part of Lawrence to pass political comment? Would the only guy in the room able to ride a camel SAY ANYTHING?). My mum tried to say how frail he looked but he's always been that thin. See?

http://www.globalgallery.com/product.links/s-bwc-A034.jpg

One of my former suitors even tried to theorise that he looked enough like PO'T to sustain my interest.

suzy (suzy), Monday, 24 March 2003 14:24 (twenty-three years ago)

http://www.reel.com/content/boxart/vhs/1386.GIF

But right now I really want to watch THIS.

suzy (suzy), Monday, 24 March 2003 14:27 (twenty-three years ago)

matthew mcconaughey trying to keep his shit together, despite telltale psycho stare and jaw set to "gurn" all the way though the ceremony

He always looks that way though.

Nicole (Nicole), Monday, 24 March 2003 14:29 (twenty-three years ago)

Especially when attacking Renee Zellweger with a chainsaw (that is what happened in that one movie, right?).

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 24 March 2003 14:46 (twenty-three years ago)

I totally want to see Jennifer Garner nude. That fucker from Felcity gets to hit that shit every night.

http://graphics7.nytimes.com/images/2003/03/23/movies/fash_garner.jpg

Goddamn!!!!

Chris V. (Chris V), Monday, 24 March 2003 18:26 (twenty-three years ago)

this is a really late, negligible complaint, but i'm convinced that "24 Hour Party People" deserved nominations. Bastards.

badgerminor (badgerminor), Monday, 24 March 2003 18:31 (twenty-three years ago)

ha ha ha

rosemary (rosemary), Monday, 24 March 2003 20:15 (twenty-three years ago)

I didn't know Horst Bucholz had died until they did that dead people montage. This happens with someone every year. I heart Hortz. Sigh...
