Hello,
I'm looking for any novels, modern ones would be best, where the main subject is grief and the reactions to it. Any of you knowledgeable book types out there got any suggestions?

I haven't really read very many books, but Dave Eggers "Heartbreaking Work of Staggering Genius" comes to mind. It's this guy who's parents died within two weeks of each other - hilarity ensues. Really.

Was About Schmidt based on a novel? I think it was, but can't remember who by. The film is great.

Not really a novel, but CS Lewis's 'A Grief Observed' is dizzingly good, I think. I have never been badly bereaved, but Lewis is such a tirelessly talented descriptor of trains of anguished thought that I was completely drawn into his experience.

I'm reading one at the moment, Stay by Nicole Griffith. It's kind of a thriller with a strong grief-stricken female American Norwegian protaganist.
