When people add you to their buddy list then don't talk to you - C or D?

Especially when you have no clue who they are and are utterly curious and they remain staunch in silence.

Cozen (Cozen), Tuesday, 25 March 2003 19:25 (twenty-three years ago)

sometimes i really feel like talking to strangers, so i will invite ILXors to IM me, and then, 20 minutes later, i don't feel like talking anymore so they drift off into the icy shadows of the "internet misc." group on my buddy list.

j fail (cenotaph), Tuesday, 25 March 2003 19:29 (twenty-three years ago)

its just people who want to feel like they have a big list of 'friends' on their contact list thus they are popular or something

stevem (blueski), Tuesday, 25 March 2003 19:30 (twenty-three years ago)

How do you know if someone else has added you to their buddy list if they don't IM you?

hstencil, Tuesday, 25 March 2003 19:33 (twenty-three years ago)

its just people who want to feel like they have a big list of 'friends' on their contact list thus they are popular or something

Or......they just want to keep in touch with the mates they already have.

Nichole Graham (Nichole Graham), Tuesday, 25 March 2003 19:38 (twenty-three years ago)

Cos a little dialogue box pops up asking for your consent to let them put you on their list, stencil.

Cozen (Cozen), Tuesday, 25 March 2003 19:39 (twenty-three years ago)

Cozen: I've never had that happen! Are you talking about ICQ?

Jon Williams (ex machina), Tuesday, 25 March 2003 19:42 (twenty-three years ago)

it's just that I add everyone to my buddy list when I'm in one of those big chats, and then I never log into IM for weeks on end, and I think maybe I could IM ilxors but think it'd be rude if I didn't know them on the board that well. So, perhaps I should stop adding people to my buddylist.

jel -- (jel), Tuesday, 25 March 2003 19:44 (twenty-three years ago)

No, it's on MSN, Jon.

Cozen (Cozen), Tuesday, 25 March 2003 19:47 (twenty-three years ago)

Why do people use MSN!!! You're fucking nuts!

Jon Williams (ex machina), Tuesday, 25 March 2003 19:47 (twenty-three years ago)

I've been getting a lot of those lately - I have no idea who the people are, so I just don't accept it

luna (luna.c), Tuesday, 25 March 2003 19:48 (twenty-three years ago)

how does one go about participating in one of them 'big chats'?

Dave M. (rotten03), Tuesday, 25 March 2003 19:49 (twenty-three years ago)

whoa, MSN still has a chat? any good?

j fail (cenotaph), Tuesday, 25 March 2003 19:49 (twenty-three years ago)

Has anyone else had porno hyperlinks (i.e. spam) msgd to them on AIM? I've had it twice. I wonder how it happened -- like is it an accepted occurrence or do I have to consider it was caused by someone with malicious intent toward me? (I know one asshole deliberately subscribed me to some porn stuff a while ago... personal vendetta territory... wonder if this was connected.)

My AIM is chrissie1068; feel free to add me to your list if you like to have a big one, but don't talk to me. I'm horrible.

ChristineSH (chrissie1068), Tuesday, 25 March 2003 19:54 (twenty-three years ago)

a ton of people i work with have been having problems getting weird spam messages about penile enlargment just through windows - they pop up as a windows messenger service. pretty clever.

j fail (cenotaph), Tuesday, 25 March 2003 19:55 (twenty-three years ago)

Nothing on AIM, though? It hasn't happened lately, but the 'why' does bug me a bit.

ChristineSH (chrissie1068), Tuesday, 25 March 2003 19:56 (twenty-three years ago)

Why not just block them? Simple.

Switchin Mitch, Tuesday, 25 March 2003 20:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Didn't know who/what it was until I accepted the msg. The name used was pretty inoccuous.

ChristineSH (chrissie1068), Tuesday, 25 March 2003 20:01 (twenty-three years ago)

yeah, i've never gotten AIM spam, though i used to get ICQ spam quite a bit back when i used ICQ.

j fail (cenotaph), Tuesday, 25 March 2003 20:03 (twenty-three years ago)

The problem isn't that they're there. In fact there isn't a problem I'm just wondering what would motivate someone to add you to their buddy list and not talk to you even when you prompt them. The only reason I can think is surveillance, which would be a problem. Are there any h4X0ring techniques which employ being on someone's buddy list?

Cozen (Cozen), Tuesday, 25 March 2003 20:05 (twenty-three years ago)

neat trick for windows xp / 2000 users:

net send \\IP.ADD.RE.SS MESSAGE

Jon Williams (ex machina), Tuesday, 25 March 2003 20:06 (twenty-three years ago)

ICQ was abysmal for spam, not to mention heaps of unsolicited come-ons. Of course, I hadn't configured it properly, and instead of using my brain I just stopped using it...

ChristineSH (chrissie1068), Tuesday, 25 March 2003 20:06 (twenty-three years ago)

if you see me on your buddylist then i have added you.

if i'm not talking to you it means you or i suck.

jess (dubplatestyle), Tuesday, 25 March 2003 20:07 (twenty-three years ago)

haha, Jess you are on my buddy list but I never talk to you 'cos yr a scary fucker who eats arms*.

*this may mean weapons or, yeah, arms.

Cozen (Cozen), Tuesday, 25 March 2003 20:10 (twenty-three years ago)

you can spoof messages with icq also

Jon Williams (ex machina), Tuesday, 25 March 2003 20:12 (twenty-three years ago)

i'll eat anything these days.

jess (dubplatestyle), Tuesday, 25 March 2003 20:14 (twenty-three years ago)

Yeah, what's wrong with legs? Better still, a whole baby. Very tender.

ChristineSH (chrissie1068), Tuesday, 25 March 2003 20:15 (twenty-three years ago)

If I've been in a big chat with ilxors I will usually add their names to the ilx section of my buddy list, mainly so I can figure out who the heck they are if one of them decides to send me a message.

Nicole (Nicole), Tuesday, 25 March 2003 20:33 (twenty-three years ago)

I would love to have a chat with people from here, but I'm afraid to ask anyone to let me. I'm on AIM, ICQ and Messenger (I like Messenger the best). I talk to a couple of people from ILX now, and I think I might annoy the crap out of them! KIM & SEAN C TO THREAD.

Bryan (Bryan), Tuesday, 25 March 2003 20:39 (twenty-three years ago)

Well, I guess you could just trying asking the time or something.

ChristineSH (chrissie1068), Tuesday, 25 March 2003 20:42 (twenty-three years ago)

I haven't gotten any ICQ spam in a LONG LONG time now that I think about it.

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Tuesday, 25 March 2003 20:45 (twenty-three years ago)

Me neither, and when I do it kinda cracks me up anyway. What was that, Christine?

Bryan (Bryan), Tuesday, 25 March 2003 20:46 (twenty-three years ago)

You know, I haven't gotten ICQ spam either. I guess the program has fallen out of favour now. Ho well.

Yes, Bryan. We find you VERY VERY ANNOYING.

Sean Carruthers (SeanC), Tuesday, 25 March 2003 20:49 (twenty-three years ago)

YAY FOR ME!!!

Bryan (Bryan), Tuesday, 25 March 2003 20:50 (twenty-three years ago)

I'm actually trying not to be annoying at the moment. Not working, is it?

ChristineSH (chrissie1068), Tuesday, 25 March 2003 20:52 (twenty-three years ago)

No, Christine, I just couldn't understand what you were saying up there, mostly because I'm an idiot.

Bryan (Bryan), Tuesday, 25 March 2003 20:54 (twenty-three years ago)

Maybe they've moved on to 7 digit numbers only from now on.

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Tuesday, 25 March 2003 20:55 (twenty-three years ago)

Oh... if you want to msg someone, invent a phony pretext like, 'Do you have the time?' or 'Do you know when the next flight to Baghdad is?' I'm told it works.

ChristineSH (chrissie1068), Tuesday, 25 March 2003 20:56 (twenty-three years ago)

Or here's a good one... seriously... 'Gee, I've had *so* much trouble with this damned program -- can you tell me if it's working okay?'

ChristineSH (chrissie1068), Tuesday, 25 March 2003 20:59 (twenty-three years ago)

What, you mean "I'm hot, horny and naked on my webcam right now!!!1!!1" isn't a legitimate way to start a conversation over ICQ?

Sean Carruthers (SeanC), Tuesday, 25 March 2003 21:01 (twenty-three years ago)

Well, I am hot and horny and if I had a webcam I might pose naked for it. But I wouldn't tell anyone.

ChristineSH (chrissie1068), Tuesday, 25 March 2003 21:03 (twenty-three years ago)

Ahh!!! I've got to get away from accounting. I usually say, "WTF?" or "How's it goin', eh?" or something like that, then it devolves into a talk about bowel movements or some crap (pun intended). I sometimes forget that people have LIVES whereas I don't, even though I "work" all day.

Bryan (Bryan), Tuesday, 25 March 2003 21:03 (twenty-three years ago)

I don't have a life. If I did, do you think I'd pretend to be hot and horny on here?

ChristineSH (chrissie1068), Tuesday, 25 March 2003 21:04 (twenty-three years ago)

You mean you're NOT hot and horny?

Chris P (Chris P), Tuesday, 25 March 2003 21:06 (twenty-three years ago)

Horny, maybe. Hot... well, I could do with opening the window. Is that what you mean?

ChristineSH (chrissie1068), Tuesday, 25 March 2003 21:08 (twenty-three years ago)

Well, if by "the window" you mean "my snatch", then maybe.

Chris P (Chris P), Tuesday, 25 March 2003 21:10 (twenty-three years ago)

if you are on my buddy list it's because i think you're interesting. if i don't talk to you it's because i'm not.

Maria (Maria), Tuesday, 25 March 2003 21:12 (twenty-three years ago)

I'm thoroughly ignorant of the meaning of your preferred idiom, I'm afraid. This one's double-glazed (inner and outer covering) -- am I getting warmer?

ChristineSH (chrissie1068), Tuesday, 25 March 2003 21:14 (twenty-three years ago)

Chris officially steps over the line! Maria, I'll bet I could DESTROY you in a bore-off!

Bryan (Bryan), Tuesday, 25 March 2003 21:14 (twenty-three years ago)

Christine proves me wrong!

Bryan (Bryan), Tuesday, 25 March 2003 21:15 (twenty-three years ago)

W-w-what did *I* do?

ChristineSH (chrissie1068), Tuesday, 25 March 2003 21:16 (twenty-three years ago)

Christine is my current hero. And not only because she's hot and horny and posing naked for her webcam.

Sean Carruthers (SeanC), Tuesday, 25 March 2003 21:16 (twenty-three years ago)

Oh I think she is Sean's current heroin.

Chris P (Chris P), Tuesday, 25 March 2003 21:17 (twenty-three years ago)

Sean = OTM.

Bryan (Bryan), Tuesday, 25 March 2003 21:17 (twenty-three years ago)

I feel I should be embarrassed for some reason.

ChristineSH (chrissie1068), Tuesday, 25 March 2003 21:23 (twenty-three years ago)

Don't hide your feelings, Christine. You can be open with us.

Chris P (Chris P), Tuesday, 25 March 2003 21:24 (twenty-three years ago)

You shouldn't Christine, unless realization of your own brilliance causes you embarrassment.

Bryan (Bryan), Tuesday, 25 March 2003 21:25 (twenty-three years ago)

Hmmm... yes, very embarrassing. I feel a bit exposed now.

ChristineSH (chrissie1068), Tuesday, 25 March 2003 21:34 (twenty-three years ago)

Cos a little dialogue box pops up asking for your consent to let them put you on their list, stencil.

I have never, ever seen this when I've used AOL or AIM.

hstencil, Tuesday, 25 March 2003 21:35 (twenty-three years ago)

If you want to quit feeling exposed, turn that webcam off!

Sean Carruthers (SeanC), Tuesday, 25 March 2003 21:36 (twenty-three years ago)

I think I will. My jaw's aching now.

I've been chewing gum too much.

ChristineSH (chrissie1068), Tuesday, 25 March 2003 21:39 (twenty-three years ago)

(That wasn't a joke, about the gum, BTW. I got a hair in my mouth too... ack...)

ChristineSH (chrissie1068), Tuesday, 25 March 2003 21:46 (twenty-three years ago)

I've just signed to aim. my screen name is jdesouza79.

finally I'm learning all this computer shit.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Tuesday, 25 March 2003 21:47 (twenty-three years ago)

I am about to get undressed and log off now, anyway.

If anyone wants to massage me, hurry up.

ChristineSH (chrissie1068), Tuesday, 25 March 2003 22:02 (twenty-three years ago)

Er... I meant message me. Obviously.

ChristineSH (chrissie1068), Tuesday, 25 March 2003 22:03 (twenty-three years ago)

DING DING DING!

Bryan (Bryan), Tuesday, 25 March 2003 22:03 (twenty-three years ago)

ha, I just found an e-mail in my spam-catching hotmail inbox entitled 'hi' that just says 'hi' in the body. I have no idea who the person is.

Cozen (Cozen), Tuesday, 25 March 2003 22:06 (twenty-three years ago)

Probably just checking to see if your email address is valid. That or it was a message from a very shy person.

Bryan (Bryan), Tuesday, 25 March 2003 22:10 (twenty-three years ago)

You got my message!

Sean Carruthers (SeanC), Tuesday, 25 March 2003 22:10 (twenty-three years ago)

I want a mail like that! All I get is really obvious spam. Sob.

ChristineSH (chrissie1068), Tuesday, 25 March 2003 22:11 (twenty-three years ago)

I said I was going. Why haven't I?

ChristineSH (chrissie1068), Tuesday, 25 March 2003 22:13 (twenty-three years ago)

get out of the house christine. it will do you good.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Tuesday, 25 March 2003 22:19 (twenty-three years ago)

Maybe. Maybe. Um. No, no, no, I might actually *meet* someone -- they might *speak* to me!

Argh.

ChristineSH (chrissie1068), Tuesday, 25 March 2003 22:21 (twenty-three years ago)

Christine, you haven't answered my email! *sob*

Sean Carruthers (SeanC), Tuesday, 25 March 2003 22:25 (twenty-three years ago)

she might have gone out sean. she might have met someone already.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Tuesday, 25 March 2003 22:26 (twenty-three years ago)

Oh... if that's serious, you see, the trouble is, this account doesn't deliver very speedily. Sometimes takes hours if the server's nixed. Better delivery speed to [email protected] for what it's worth.

Might switch to BT when we move...

ChristineSH (chrissie1068), Tuesday, 25 March 2003 22:27 (twenty-three years ago)

(You're right. That sounds better.)

I'm out and meeting people.

There might even be sex involved.

ChristineSH (chrissie1068), Tuesday, 25 March 2003 22:29 (twenty-three years ago)

just chatted to cozen so that's sorted.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Tuesday, 25 March 2003 22:56 (twenty-three years ago)

Really going this time. Oh yes.

ChristineSH (chrissie1068), Tuesday, 25 March 2003 23:08 (twenty-three years ago)

I did go too. And no one massaged me. :( And I still didn't see anything in the in-box either. :((((

ChristineSH (chrissie1068), Wednesday, 26 March 2003 00:51 (twenty-three years ago)

I hate AIM. But then again I find people very stressful. The last thing I need is a small window popping up occassionally telling me 'so and so' desperately needs to chat. And I type too fast and wait far too long time for responses due to my friend's inability to type (I could have made that plural but I've only got one person on AIM and he works nights and because of the time difference we never chat anymore). The whole thing is a 21st Century distraction. I think I may throw the computer out the window and get a typewriter.

(This was not AIMed at you John and Pashimina. When I am less busy I will fill you in on life happenings!)

Samson, Wednesday, 26 March 2003 00:58 (twenty-three years ago)

Cos a little dialogue box pops up asking for your consent to let them put you on their list, stencil.
I have never, ever seen this when I've used AOL or AIM.

Me neither!

Sean (Sean), Wednesday, 26 March 2003 01:07 (twenty-three years ago)

i don't think AOL or AIM has that feature...

liz! (liz!), Wednesday, 26 March 2003 01:11 (twenty-three years ago)
