The inevitable death of the Western software engineer

This has been a threat for quite some time, of course. But I think the awareness of this inevitable reality needs to increase, because it's probably just around the curve.

Mainly, it's just a matter of being open to other plans besides relying on the "C++ will provide you a direct escalator to financial heaven" motif, that's still surprisingly strong in the States, and other countries.

I think university programs in comp sci are now preparing students for this reality, whereas my generation.. the late 20s/early 30s folks were mainly taught to just kick back and enjoy those sodas, compilers, and meaty salaries.

Anyway, paranoid geeks to thread.

I presume software engineers are like any other profession... if at some point there is loads of moolah in it then loads of students will find ways into it, thereby bidding down wage levels in the long run. When you get this coupled with a war coupled with a cyclical economic downturn coupled with a degree of investor cynicism about the whole tech sector you then get a lot of software engineers working in McDonalds.

I'm a college dropout making more money than my mom doing software engineering I'm totally not qualified to do. IMHO, a lot of people who shouldn't be programmers are programmers right now. Some people can't sing and some people can't program.
