It's a beautiful night so I have my windows open. I'm listening to Neil Young, and it's drifting softly through the window. There is a dog out in the yard next door, adjacent to said window. The neighbors keep the dog out in the yard until all hours of the night. When I'm playing music with high-pitched sounds, like Neil Young's voice, and my window is open, the dog howls. When the side is over and the music stops, the dog stops howling. I've turned my music down but the dog, being a dog, can still hear it. He's still howling. It's unnerving. I feel like I'm torturing the dog. I could close my window, but it's such a nice night. I could turn my music down further, but it's awfully soft. I could wonder why the neighbors keep their noisy dog outdoors late at night. I could get annoyed at this, but should I? Should I be annoyed at myself for torturing the poor dog? Am I torturing him? Should I be amused by the idea of the dog singing along to Neil Young? I don't think that's what he's doing. Please help me undestand this situation.

Not enough interesting harmony in the music you listen to, and the melody just follows the same pattern without enough compositional structure.

I think the dog next door is singing along to the record, not crying. Maybe it's pretending to itself that it's backyard is a traditional English pub and that "After the Goldrush" is really "It's A Long Way to Tipperary".

My sister's dog howls to music, but only some of it. Violin music almost always, guitar less frequently--the stuff that's especially melodic, typically. He prefers live music to recordings, though he occasionally howls at something on the stereo. He seems quite fond of classical, but with lots of violin around, he's a classically-raised dog.

My sister has to sneak into her room with a mute on her violin to avoid him. If he finds out she's practicing, he's very insistent on joining her in the room and howling along. When he's doing his whole aroo-aroo singing, his ears are up and he has all the body language of a happy dog.

So no, you're prob not torturing the dog, he probably likes singing along to higher pitched music. Really.

My friend has a bird that loves heavy metal. She'll get very worked up until someone gets her out of her cage and on the perch near the stereo.
