YAAAAY!!!! The one thing my state had going for it is GONE

Okay, in case you didn't know, I live in New Hampshire, and yes, this is an actual state in the US. The one recognizable thing this state had, an image which was recognizable to all of us, was the Old Man in the Mountain. The Old Man was a naturally occuring image on the side of one our mountains of... and Old Man! It's supposed to represent the commitment, perseverence, and moral-steadfastness that represents the state of New Hampshire. Scientists say it was about 2 million years old, and now it's GONE. THE ONE THING THAT THIS STATE ACTUALLY HAD, AND IT'S GONE. Hahahaha that's just great. See, that's what this cold and bitter state represents to me, a black hole on this face of this country from which no life can escape, so powerful that it can even suck the life out of 2 million year old inanimate rock. So now I'm being bitter. And what does that mean? I must be from New Hampshire!

Presumably it hasn't looked like an old man for the whole 200 million years; maybe it started to resemble an old man around the time there were first creatures about the place who might recognise it as such. Which would mean the implications of its collapse now are BEYOND TERRIFYING. If you're human, leave NH now.

anyway, what was really interesting about this story is how they had the Old Man propped up with cables and stuff ... so they had an inkling that it could have collapsed. so the thing had been there for thousands of years before Europeans discovered it, and in that 300 or so years it eroded so badly (while being OK for however many thousands of years it existed beforehand)!

I grew up in NH (Dan, where're you?), and yeah, this made me sad. I used to see the Old Man all the damn time. Plus, it's on our quarters.

New Hampshire still has the good apple cider, though, now that Massachusetts has to pasteurize it.

My ancestors settled in Richmond, New Hampshire in the mid 1700s after coming over from the UK. There's a wonderfully spooky old graveyard of Barruses out in the middle of the woods along with a house that my great-great-great-great-great-great-grandfather built in 1777.

I live on the far southern part of New Hampshire, twenty minutes from the Mass boarder. Yeah, it is cheap here. No seatbelt law for over 18 year olds. And I do love our motto, but it kind of reinforces the idea of how uninviting we are... hehehehe

The standard Maine joke in my mother's family is an anecdote about the infamous Uncle Spike, who was married to my ... great-aunt, I think, or her sister. Mostly it's an Uncle Spike joke (he was also infamous for never, even in church or at weddings, removing his John Deere hat), but I think of it as a Maine joke.

Uncle Spike: Yep, I went downna Boston once t'see a man about a job. Wadn't too much impressed. I don't guess you could get me to move outta Maine for any job. Not even for three dollahs an owah!
