No, it's not a Gareth question, it's one of mine. Has anyone been down there? Is it cool? What would you recommend down there?

chris (chris), Friday, 9 May 2003 12:10 (twenty-three years ago)

Oooh, you're spoilt fer choice. You could do a lot worse than this part of Florida. Or the Carribean?

The Keys are beautiful. Long drive, though, but worth it. Be on the lookout for the Key Deer!

Key West is an armpit. The rest of the keys are varying degree of nice to beautiful. The Everglades are very kewl.

fletrejet, Friday, 9 May 2003 14:14 (twenty-three years ago)

I have been trying to plan a vacation forever (I've never taken a real one!) and since I have a brother in Miami I am thinknig about maybe going for a few days there and then maybe a few in Key West. An armpit?? Everyone I've talked to has said it's nice. I can't make up my mind where I want to go anyway.

Sean (Sean), Friday, 9 May 2003 20:03 (twenty-three years ago)

armpits are nice

oops (Oops), Friday, 9 May 2003 20:10 (twenty-three years ago)

maybe he just meant hot and humid and hairy

oops (Oops), Friday, 9 May 2003 20:10 (twenty-three years ago)

What I meant was that Key West over-developed and crowded = lots of sweaty people close together = armpit. In the past it probabably had a lot of charm, you can see reminders in some of the old buildings, but now its pretty tacky. Lots of bars/nightlife/homosexuals though, if that's your thing.

miami proper = hell
miami/south beach = different world

The Keys are fun. If you like to saltwater fish, it's angler's paradise. If you scuba dive, there are some cool reefs. You will have to hire a boat, which can be very costly, but the boat captains know the spots. I don't suggest the Keys for daytripping, because they are longer than you would expect plus the traffic can be horrible on weekends. If you go to the Keys, stay there for at least two nights at an absolute minimum. In the summer, it is very, very hot. Scorching hot.

Remember, the Keys are for boating, fishing, and diving. If you only want beaches, don't even bother going.

Key West is pretty funky, but touristy. It's similar to the French Quarter(when it's not Mardi Gras or New Orleans saints football Sunday) in bars and rowdiness and climate. Very libertarian people. It's inexcusable not to have a good time really.

The Dry Tortugas are worth checking out if you like history and forts.

Miami -- South Beach, Biscayne Bay are absolute musts. South Beach nightlife can be the best in the world on a given night. South Americans, Eurotrash, jetsetters, models, celebrities, everything. Lots of hot bodies. Blow your money at the clubs and you may get lucky. If you can't dance, I suggest you learn.

Ft. Lauderdale and West Palm Beach aren't that great. Unless, you like golf. Miami has it all. Reserve a room at one of the famous hotels in South Beach if you can. Go all out if possible. Miami is much better if you indulge and spend big.

If you want to spend less in Miami, simply hit the beach, get a tan, and just enjoy the beautiful people.

My wife's going to the Keys for an opera workshop. No, I'm not jealous.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Saturday, 10 May 2003 01:15 (twenty-three years ago)

It is not possible to convince me that Denise Crosby is not the mayor of Key West, that Jennifer Tilly isn't an (ex?) hooker named Savannah who works in a bar there, and that Fisher Stevens doesn't write for the local paper.

four years pass...

I'm going to Key West, Roatan, Grand Cayman, and Cozumel. Anything cool to do there?

CaptainLorax, Friday, 4 April 2008 01:26 (eighteen years ago)

Drink, fish, and wade in the murky water.

Alfred, Lord Sotosyn, Friday, 4 April 2008 01:27 (eighteen years ago)

what about hos?

CaptainLorax, Friday, 4 April 2008 01:31 (eighteen years ago)

or clubs?

CaptainLorax, Friday, 4 April 2008 01:38 (eighteen years ago)

and whats the best way to buy drugs without getting ripped off?

CaptainLorax, Friday, 4 April 2008 01:38 (eighteen years ago)

With the exception of Keys Largo and West, most of the keys are dead -- residential and/or snowbird joints with beautiful homes and local dives. Which is not to say that you couldn't find excellent food and good bars on any of them. If you're looking for action, though, there ain't much. As a Miamian, I know the difference.

As for the drugs, trust the local weed.

Alfred, Lord Sotosyn, Friday, 4 April 2008 01:40 (eighteen years ago)

Dry Tortugas!
