So, like, apparently, the air conditioner here exploded and caught on fire and there was like alarms and shit and everything. Like this happened at 10am. So the "fire safety director" (we have no such person, it's just some chick from the hotel) gets on saying it's just a fire drill and no one is to go anywhere. Meanwhile, this place reeks of burnt wire and it's filled with hazy smoke. Also: 90 degrees in here. Since 10am! And we cannot go home. WHY couldn't the place just completely blow up, after I leave ?That'd be so cool.

Dude, this thread is totally serious! My workplace is filled with electrical wire smoke and we're not being allowed to leave! And they won't call the fire department cos we've got so many violations. Oh my god. I'm getting carbon monoxide poisoning.

...and meanwhile, in places like the one i work in, it got to the point where we had fire drills so often (and all went outside, apropos of nothing) that the fire department had taken to taking its sweet time to get here, moseying in, and then eventually wandering back out to inform us that all was okay.

if the alarm went off for so much as a single ding, i think we'd all have to go outside.

that's ridiculous, Ally. anyone else there you can convince to leave with you? it'd be far more difficult for them to reprimand you for leaving (when you SHOULD, but that's beside the point) if a whole group does it with you...

That's extremely not good. What worries me is the other violations the place has -- because of that they're refusing to call the fire department? Um, not good at all. Isn't there someone there with some sort of ethical judgement that you can talk to about this?

We have no ethics. I mean, the fire was put out by some dude that came in and took apart the A/C, he seemed to know how to put out an electrical fire at least. The landlord was like, "No, it's not the A/C, it's Balduccis, they're probably cooking fish." It's like, what? Do they wrap the fish in wire and rubber and then blow it up? That seems a bit non-tasty if you ask me. So I get the landlord over...and he yells at my boss about a box in the hallway because it's a fire hazard!!! Meanwhile, the a/c is literally ON FIRE while he's doing this, I mean wtf is that?

PS Craig is not the boss of me, STFU, he's not even in this building!

Happened here once during freezing rain. They didn't evacuate the building but it smelt like burning plastic and was pretty nerve racking but at least they didn't lie about it.

Anyway when callback armageddon sets in circa 2, ie when noone who i took messages for has got called back by managers and they all begin calling me back, I suspect some of them hang up at the sound of my voice.

Maybe this is paranoid but it's very rude, I want to dial them back and ask them how they think they'd feel, or tell them to stop making prank phonecalls.

I told the story about how my office building caught on fire a couple of years ago, didn't I? While I packed up my stuff and got the fuck out of Dodge, the rest of my coworkers milled around asking, "Is that smoke? Is this a real fire? It is? Should we leave the building?"

The best was when they finally joined me outside and this one guy said, "Oh, I left my housekeys upstairs" and tried to go back inside, only to be furiously rebuffed by the fire department. (The FD wanted to condemn the building. As it was my last week with the company, I was deeply amused.)

I might have told this story in another thread, but one of the best days of my life was during the last summer I lived in India. It being India and summer, it was about 110 degrees outside. I was working in an office building, doing shitty office work that I hated. One morning, the building next door caught on fire, on the floor at the same level as the floor that I worked on. There was only a narrow (maybe 10 feet) alley between our two buildings, and I could see into the office that was on fire, all this paper and desks and stuff burning. The fire trucks came and tried to squeeze into the alley between the two buildings, but they couldn't fit. So the firemen came up into our building, to my floor, and used our fire hoses to try and put out the fire, dragging them through the halls and spraying them out the window to the building next door. The hoses left big puddles in the hallways. It wasn't until this point that they started sending people from my office home. Me and my friend Kate who worked in the same building got the hell out of there on an autorickshaw, went to the American Embassy compound, where we met up with the rest of our friends, and spent the rest of the blistering day in the pool and getting paid for it. The building I work in should get some sort of reward for their fire safety efforts. Everbody, it seems, has a job to do in case there's a fire. There are constant meetings about it to the point of fear mongering. I'm convinced that if something was to ever happen no one would get out alive because of the tasks they have to perform. That's how safe this building is.
