* both London born and bred and those who've moved there since.

I have never been on the East London Line or the Waterloo & City.

MarkH (MarkH), Friday, 13 June 2003 20:48 (twenty-two years ago)

...and never went on the Aldwych section of the Piccadilly, or the Epping-Ongar section of the Central and now it's TOO LATE!

MarkH (MarkH), Friday, 13 June 2003 20:54 (twenty-two years ago)

I've not been on the Waterloo and City either. That's it.

Eyeball Kicks (Eyeball Kicks), Friday, 13 June 2003 21:00 (twenty-two years ago)

yeah, just the ELL and the W&C. I've been on everything else.

jel -- (jel), Friday, 13 June 2003 21:00 (twenty-two years ago)

The East London Line is boring. You have to hang about for 15 minutes before a train comes & you only get to New Cross. What a waste of a wait.

Eyeball Kicks (Eyeball Kicks), Friday, 13 June 2003 21:09 (twenty-two years ago)

i like Surrey Quays station on the East London Line, its quite unique, and i liken it to the gates of Hell, being as it is the point where the line goes underground north to Wapping etc.

never been on Waterloo & City line but covered everything else. i used to go out PRIMARILY to explore the tube in fact (went to Aldwycg when i heard it was closing). stations i've NOT passed:

Chesham (Metropolitan)
Mill Hill East, Kennington - Morden (Northern)
Cockfosters - Arnos Grove (Picadilly)
Epping - Snaresbrook, Woodford - Wanstead (Central)
Upminster Bridge - Upney (District)
Canning Town - Beckton (Docklands Light Railway)
North Greenwich - Westminster (Jubilee)
Lambeth North (Bakerloo)

so the only lines i've travelled in full are the Victoria and the Hammersmith & City

did anyone ever go to Ongar before it closed?

stevem (blueski), Friday, 13 June 2003 21:30 (twenty-two years ago)

Never done ELL but did W and C once just for the hell of it one dull afternoon. I've only ever been on the DLR two or three times but that's just because I've never had any business as such there.

darren (darren), Friday, 13 June 2003 21:59 (twenty-two years ago)

the DLR is fun: Docklands Light Railway appreciation society

stevem (blueski), Friday, 13 June 2003 23:10 (twenty-two years ago)

i forgot to mention i dont think i've ever been to Shoreditch tube station, and its closing in a couple of years...

stevem (blueski), Friday, 13 June 2003 23:12 (twenty-two years ago)

I went on them all. Then I recognised that London had nothing more to offer me and moved on.

N. (nickdastoor), Friday, 13 June 2003 23:19 (twenty-two years ago)

I've not used the Waterloo & City either. I assume there is a constituency of commuters who find it handy. I've been on all the others, but not that far out on several of them.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Saturday, 14 June 2003 10:29 (twenty-two years ago)

I used the W&C for the first time the other day. The trains are blue which is UNNATURAL and WRONG. Never been on the ELL but have done everything else. I like London Bridge tube station - it's so clean and modern-looking, maybe because there are no ads until you get onto the platforms.

j0e (j0e), Saturday, 14 June 2003 11:21 (twenty-two years ago)

i can't believe quite a few haven't been on the EL line. go to Surrey Quays and see a film at the Warner Village i command you!

how far round has anyone been on the Circle line in one go, out of curiosity? anyone ever fallen asleep and woke up exactly where they started? your hilarious Circle line anecdotes here please...

stevem (blueski), Saturday, 14 June 2003 13:07 (twenty-two years ago)

go to Surrey Quays and see a film at the Warner Village i command you!

or you could take a stroll thru Southwark Park, not been there, is it nice?

When I was new to London, when the underground still turned me on, I planned to one time spend an afternoon sitting on the circle line with a big book. I'm not gonna do it now.

circle line parties: urban myth or very very real?

there was a news story on this recently with footage - nice idea in theory but my rampant claustrophobia would hinder any sense of enjoyment personally.

stevem (blueski), Saturday, 14 June 2003 15:57 (twenty-two years ago)

Another one for the East London Line, even though I used to live in New Cross (although I do try to block that out.)

Anna (Anna), Saturday, 14 June 2003 16:40 (twenty-two years ago)

maybe we should all throw a party on the East London Line - start at Shoreditch and head down to lovely New Cross Gate.

Circle Line Party

Dave B (daveb), Saturday, 14 June 2003 21:14 (twenty-two years ago)

Y'all should read "Tunnel Vision" by Keith Lowe.

It's about a guy who accepts a bet to visit every underground station in one day, and is a true testament to nerdiness in fictional form. I quite enjoyed it.

ailsa (ailsa), Sunday, 15 June 2003 16:49 (twenty-two years ago)

Didn't someone on ILE try this and discover it was impossible?

N. (nickdastoor), Sunday, 15 June 2003 17:13 (twenty-two years ago)

But a couple of people have done it - records have been set and broken. Apparently you are allowed to miss out the Jubilee Line extension as that was built after the challenge was initially set to all Underground nerds, thereby making it do-able.

ailsa (ailsa), Sunday, 15 June 2003 17:16 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh, well in that case.

N. (nickdastoor), Sunday, 15 June 2003 17:17 (twenty-two years ago)

Look, I don't know, I've just read about it somewhere. I have no intention of verifying its feasibility.

*slinks out of thread with tail between legs*

ailsa (ailsa), Sunday, 15 June 2003 17:20 (twenty-two years ago)

i'm actually more interested in visiting every tube stop by CAR than by train...if that makes sense. i am fascinated by the actual buildings and their various designs.

stevem (blueski), Sunday, 15 June 2003 17:27 (twenty-two years ago)

You are allowed to get out at tube stations, you know.

N. (nickdastoor), Sunday, 15 June 2003 17:33 (twenty-two years ago)

I practically *am* SE London and have never set foot on the East London line (ie because wherever you are in Central London the normal train or DLR will suit you much better).

Other than that I have never used the Waterloo & City or Hammersmith & City lines... amazingly I don't think I'd ever used the Central Line until a mate of mine moved to Buckhurst Hill.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Sunday, 15 June 2003 20:22 (twenty-two years ago)

Buckhurst Hill? You have made this place up.

N. (nickdastoor), Sunday, 15 June 2003 23:01 (twenty-two years ago)

2 friends of mine have just moved to Buckhurst hill too, it seems to be the new Hoxton.

I'm sad to say I have been on them all, I've been to both far ends of most of them too, apart from the most Northerly bit of the Northern line, I've only been as far as Colindale on there.

chris (chris), Monday, 16 June 2003 07:39 (twenty-two years ago)

W&C (the drain) is fun. Do it standing with no hands from Bank and it really is a rollercoaster.

Sam (chirombo), Monday, 16 June 2003 07:44 (twenty-two years ago)

Buckhurst Hill is the most eerily *clean* place I have ever seen.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Monday, 16 June 2003 08:18 (twenty-two years ago)

i use w&c every day, but i do it the other way round so it quite comfortable. as everyone is coming into the city i am going to waterloo, and as everyone is going home, i go to bank

gareth (gareth), Monday, 16 June 2003 08:28 (twenty-two years ago)

Gareth you are developing an unerring knack of sounding smug about everything you do!

N. (nickdastoor), Monday, 16 June 2003 08:52 (twenty-two years ago)

:(

its not that good, because i have a 15-20 minute bus journey on one side, and a 30-35 minute train journey on the other side, so its the only part of my journey that actually works well

gareth (gareth), Monday, 16 June 2003 09:00 (twenty-two years ago)

i admire and respect your insistence on using the bus to get from Essex Road to Bank tho :)

stevem (blueski), Monday, 16 June 2003 10:04 (twenty-two years ago)

Yes, I have been on all the lines.

Whose been on all the buses.

Why hasn't there been a 254 thread yet?

Pete (Pete), Monday, 16 June 2003 10:08 (twenty-two years ago)

What do people think about the bendy buses? I went on one. It was OK. But very crowded. A loss leader to begin with, as there's no way they can inspect the tickets on each bus in the morning, and until Oyster cards get working, i can imagine it's fare dodging paradise.

Dave B (daveb), Monday, 16 June 2003 10:09 (twenty-two years ago)

I haven't been on a bendy bus but I don't like them for two reasons. One I hate being downstairs on a bus (unless it's a single-decker country bus which has a different feel - I think it's the higgledy piggledy nature of people standing and sitting in close proximity that I don't like). Two when they (bendy buses) stop they get in the way of other buses stopping to pick up passengers (and of course some unscrupulous drivers take advantage of the confusion and don't stop).

Re Epping and Ongar. I went on it a few times. Never got on or off at Blake Hall though.

David (David), Monday, 16 June 2003 10:21 (twenty-two years ago)

Bus surfing, ie standing on the bendy bit as it goes round corners and trying to keep your balance, is the new slightly lame sport of kings.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Monday, 16 June 2003 10:24 (twenty-two years ago)

what is 254?

gareth (gareth), Monday, 16 June 2003 10:55 (twenty-two years ago)

It is bus.

N. (nickdastoor), Monday, 16 June 2003 10:58 (twenty-two years ago)

253 now = 253 & 254 but i'm not sure how it splits up the action (both go past my stop) (i ph34r them)

mark s (mark s), Monday, 16 June 2003 10:58 (twenty-two years ago)

i did not know the 253 had been split like this. i only know of 253 not of 254. i am unsurprised that they split this route though all the same

gareth (gareth), Monday, 16 June 2003 11:01 (twenty-two years ago)

254 runs between Aldgate and Holloway Nags Head. 253 runs between Hackney and Euston. Previously both overlapping routes were identified as 253. I'm not sure if the change is because the 254 has been franchised off to a different operator. If not it seems dumb and unnecessary - users of the route would just make sure to check how far the 253 was going and if it would take them as far as they wanted to go. No need for a different number to make things 'easier'.

David (David), Monday, 16 June 2003 11:08 (twenty-two years ago)

when did 253s stop the full aldgate-euston in-one-go, david? some years ago? the furthest i ever went was hackney-camden or vice versa (even that was a bit iffy: i hate when buses change destinations while yr on them)

mark s (mark s), Monday, 16 June 2003 11:12 (twenty-two years ago)

253: http://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/ASIN/0006550789/ref=sr_aps_books_1_3/026-9267978-9925212

Richard Jones (scarne), Monday, 16 June 2003 11:13 (twenty-two years ago)

Mark it was some time ago, don't know when. For as long as I've been using the route (five years or so) I would always try to pick up a 253 fresh out of Hackney bus garage (the joy of getting on an empty bus) when waiting in Amherst Road, rather than a packed one that had trundled in from Aldgate.

David (David), Monday, 16 June 2003 11:20 (twenty-two years ago)

They've split my lovely 63 (Kings Cross - Crystal Palace) into 63 (Kings Cross - Honor Oak) and 363 (Elephant - Crystal Palace), too. I don't mind because I live on the overlappy bit. If I wanted to go from Kings Cross all the way to the Palace I don't think I'd choose the bus.

The N63 is unaffected, you'll be pleased to hear. (I hate those pretentious night buses).

Tim (Tim), Monday, 16 June 2003 11:36 (twenty-two years ago)

The N's rarely are. This also happened with the 10 becoming the 10 and 390. It makes sense really for you not to have to look at the destination board to see where a bus with the same number is going. Makes it easier for tourists and people who don't speak the English.

And it also means Chris T-T can do a follow up album. Yay!

Pete (Pete), Monday, 16 June 2003 11:44 (twenty-two years ago)

they scrapped the night bus to Ruislip years ago - bastards. it did go via Ealing tho, which was completely stupid (use the Western Avenue you fools!)

stevem (blueski), Monday, 16 June 2003 11:46 (twenty-two years ago)

If I wanted to go from Kings Cross all the way to the Palace I don't think I'd choose the bus.

Route splitting is annoying, I admit. But I really like making journeys across London with multiple changes. Being forced to get off at the Aldwych or Waterloo or somewhere and just be there for five minutes or so before continuing on your way on some other route adds interest, I find.

David (David), Monday, 16 June 2003 11:48 (twenty-two years ago)

I agree, but being there for twenty five minutes can take the fun out of it sometimes.

Tim (Tim), Monday, 16 June 2003 11:51 (twenty-two years ago)

Not to mention the excitement of judging exactly when its best to get off the 91 to get on the 73 that is just behind (or crucially just in front) to complete your carefully timed journey to go and see a film at 11:20 on a Sunday morning. It can sometimes be the closest urban man gets to high adventure on the open seas.

Pete (Pete), Monday, 16 June 2003 11:56 (twenty-two years ago)

Ptee is OTM here. I used to love jumping on a 38 then picking my moment to leap off and catch the 73 or 341 (141b, nostalgia fans, or was it 141a?) that it was duelling with.

N. (nickdastoor), Monday, 16 June 2003 11:58 (twenty-two years ago)

fr. the Cries of Olde London (conductor): "cinéaste overboard!"

mark s (mark s), Monday, 16 June 2003 11:59 (twenty-two years ago)

I've never lived in London. I've been on all lines on the Underground, though. The only lines I've been on the whole of, though, are the W&C, DLR and Circle.

I think the bits I've missed are:
Victoria: Stockwell-Brixton, and N of Finsbury Park
Northern: Stockwell-Morden, Colindale-Edgware, N of Highgate.
Bakerloo: N of Paddington, S of Waterloo
Central: E of Stratford, the West Ruislip branch.
District: West Ham-Upminster, Putney Bridge-Wimbledon, the Richmond and Olympia branches.
East London: Shoreditch, New Cross Gate
H&C: Edgware Road-Hammersmith, West Ham-Barking
Jubilee: N of Baker St
Met: W of Gt. Portland St
Piccadilly: Finsbury Park-Cockfosters, Ealing Common-Uxbridge

(I did do Aldwych just before it closed, though; and also the W&C when it still had the 1940s trains that said 'Southern Railway' on them)

caitlin (caitlin), Monday, 16 June 2003 11:59 (twenty-two years ago)

but being there for twenty five minutes

If you're at some sort of hub (Waterloo, Aldwych, Elephant etc.) you can sometimes just make it up as you go along. Take the first one that comes - might not take you exactly where you want to go and you might then have to take a 3rd bus or a 5 minute walk or something. Obviously not ideal on a wet day, of course.

N. 341 was 171a

David (David), Monday, 16 June 2003 12:04 (twenty-two years ago)

From TCR the number of bus options are frightening for me, using me working out speed of route and frequency of connecting bus:

73/10/390 to Euston change to a 91.
29 to Seven Sisters Road the 91.
24 to Camden then 29/253 to Seven sisters road or 134 - see below
134 to Archway then 41 (or 134 to Archway road and walk)
390 to Archway then 41
7 to Russell Square 91
38/19 to Kingsway then 91.
(Or k mentalist way to go - 19/38 to Angel 43 to Seven sisters Road then a 91 OR Archway then a 41).

Pete (Pete), Monday, 16 June 2003 12:11 (twenty-two years ago)

What about 29 to Harringay Green lanes then W5 (?!)

David (David), Monday, 16 June 2003 12:26 (twenty-two years ago)

no direct routes!!!!

gareth (gareth), Monday, 16 June 2003 12:27 (twenty-two years ago)

38/19 to Kingsway! Pawn x Angel.

Tim (Tim), Monday, 16 June 2003 12:29 (twenty-two years ago)

I forget the W5, which can also be picked up at Archway. Goping to Green Lanes would be K nutty.

I have also avoided routes which use the W7 (which would open up a load of Finsbury Park options) and the 210 as it means I have to walk up a hill as I am lazy.

Pete (Pete), Monday, 16 June 2003 12:32 (twenty-two years ago)

N. 341 was 171a

Really? I used to get that bus into work in Farringdon, from Green Lanes. The other bus route from that stop is the 141. Are you saying there wasn't a 141 before the 171a changed its name or are you saying there was no 171b on Green Lanes? Cause I'm sure there weren't previously three routes at my stop (by the Brownswood pub). I am confused. I seem to recall you are a local so please enlighten me

N. (nickdastoor), Monday, 16 June 2003 12:32 (twenty-two years ago)

I guess the splitting of major buses routes up into overlapping sections make sense from a reliability POV (and isn't anything new), but when you're at the furthest extent of said routes, there is a sense of being cut adrift a little bit.

Out here in Crystal Palace, two of the three Z1-bound routes have been cleaved (63 to 63/363, 2 to 2/432) and I fear a 3/303 scenario soon. Being at the junction of four or five boroughs, none of whom seem to have our best interests at heart, adds to the sense of being untethered and neglected. I think the staff at the Mu Mu noodle bar should run the area as a kind of satay-flavoured police state.

MJ: you just like the uniforms. Also: it would be madness in a pure form to lament the segmentation of the 63 from a Palace POV, because it's possible to find a better route than the 63 to anywhere past Elephant.

Tim (Tim), Monday, 16 June 2003 12:43 (twenty-two years ago)

N. no I'm saying that the 341 was previously the 171a. There was always the 141 as well. I don't recall there being a third route.

history of the 171a route

B-but, tumbling out of the Cheese on Fleet Street after last orders and straight on to 63 all the way home! No longer possible! After the 6-month tease of extending it past Honor Oak for services after 10:30pm.

Michael Jones (MichaelJ), Monday, 16 June 2003 12:48 (twenty-two years ago)

haha, david linked to the same thing as me!

gareth (gareth), Monday, 16 June 2003 12:48 (twenty-two years ago)

Ta Gareth & David - just worked it out myself here:

http://www.buses.plus.com/LonRoutes1C.htm No 171b or 171 alongside it - that explains it.

The 171 once ran all the way to Forest Hill!

I remember the days of the 12 going all the way from Dulwich Plough to Shepherd's Bush.

N. (nickdastoor), Monday, 16 June 2003 12:49 (twenty-two years ago)

Mike: ah yes, fair enough. You'll just have to pop into our place for a cup of tea in future.

notice how the mighty bus has taken over this originally hole-train based thread!

as i live at the bottom of ptee's hill i have near infinate ways of getting home from TCR, however only 2 of these options involve the possibility of (real, proper) chips (rather than fries) after the pub, ie 390/134 to archway then 41/walk home

CarsmileSteve (CarsmileSteve), Monday, 16 June 2003 13:03 (twenty-two years ago)

The 63 is quite good. can someone tell me where it goes from nr Southwark Choob station as i'd like to get to work without going on the choob at all, and cannot do this between 8-9am as the Thameslink is dominated by the Sutton Loop side of things.

I wish the N89 is a great bus route, even though i got my iPod nicked on it last week. Sob. He was going to nick my phone too, but then decided it was k-rub and put it back (I was in a boozy coma at the time). Even so, the route is great at night and should be the day route too, as it goes past my house and v nr work. Boo hiss.

Dave B (daveb), Monday, 16 June 2003 13:15 (twenty-two years ago)

Dave: I assume you mean South from Southwark? It goes St George's Circus -> Elephant -> New Kent Road -> Old Kent Road -> through North Peckham -> Peckham Library -> my house -> Honor Oak. I'm guessing you could get on a bus to yours from Elephant or the OKR.

Quicker though -> walk through Southwark Station to Waterloo East, it only takes a minute.

Tim (Tim), Monday, 16 June 2003 13:19 (twenty-two years ago)

oh sorry misread, it goes from right opposite Southwark Stn (under the bridge going South, outside the Ring going North)

Tim (Tim), Monday, 16 June 2003 13:23 (twenty-two years ago)

four years pass...

haven't been on the london overground since it became overground. any good?

ken c, Wednesday, 2 January 2008 15:04 (eighteen years ago)

same, except you can use pay as you go oyster on it now which is good

emsk, Wednesday, 2 January 2008 15:17 (eighteen years ago)

The Waterlogg and City line is a wonderful thing, i used to use it all the time.

One time, i wasn't quick enough getting off the Waterloo end, and got stuck on the shunt end, and had to wait five mins until it pulled into the station on the outward journey until I got off.

Mark G, Wednesday, 2 January 2008 15:21 (eighteen years ago)

when are they introducing the new look trains (nice except for the colour scheme - i hate the white+orange)?

blueski, Wednesday, 2 January 2008 15:23 (eighteen years ago)

I still haven't been on the East London Line or the Waterloo & City, but have done the Epping section of the Central now, having been to a wedding reception in Brentwood and gone home to Oxford on the Oxford Tube from Marble Arch. I don't think I'd gone further east than Mile End previously.

What was the deal with closing Shoreditch station? Was no-one using it? I read that they were actually going to fill in the cutting and build on it....craziness!

Grandpont Genie, Wednesday, 2 January 2008 15:47 (eighteen years ago)

they're building a new shoreditch station i thought - and east london line will end up joining highbury and islingotn tube station. it will rock

ken c, Wednesday, 2 January 2008 15:52 (eighteen years ago)

ShepsBush station (Central line only) is closed from Feb 2 to MID OCTOBER. for escalator something or other. i can only imagine they are putting them together an atom at a time.

koogs, Wednesday, 2 January 2008 16:36 (eighteen years ago)

Melbourne's train system is shit, but at least they don't close half the network every weekend. Is that normal? In July we had to do so much walking it was ridiculous.

Autumn Almanac, Wednesday, 2 January 2008 23:30 (eighteen years ago)

And yeah, the whole closing stations for 18 years to replace a screw.

Autumn Almanac, Wednesday, 2 January 2008 23:31 (eighteen years ago)

you're better off walking in July anyway, it gets so hot down there with no aircon.

blueski, Wednesday, 2 January 2008 23:32 (eighteen years ago)

It was 19 when we were there (that's winter in Melb), so the only problem I had was 'er indoors whinging about how cold it was.

Autumn Almanac, Wednesday, 2 January 2008 23:47 (eighteen years ago)

(apart from all the walking, obv)

Autumn Almanac, Wednesday, 2 January 2008 23:47 (eighteen years ago)
