i think sandals are the worst item of clothing that there is. people shouldnt wear them. actually you know what? if you wear them, i have, like, a contempt for you. i dont mean in an offensive way, more in a 'you are beneath me' kind of way

gareth (gareth), Sunday, 15 June 2003 09:53 (twenty-two years ago)

i feel this abt the colour brown

mark s (mark s), Sunday, 15 June 2003 09:58 (twenty-two years ago)

mitch lastnamewithheld (mitchlnw), Sunday, 15 June 2003 10:42 (twenty-two years ago)

I know my place.

FWIW I like wearing my Merrels, they're comfy and also aerated, and also knocked about from tramping through Thailand (they ended up being the only gfootwear I used over there)

chris (chris), Sunday, 15 June 2003 12:02 (twenty-two years ago)

I think sandals are ok, although much better on women than men for some reason, but I could never bring myself to wear them.

David (David), Sunday, 15 June 2003 12:20 (twenty-two years ago)

If I hadn't had some 'sports sandals' travelling around NZ, things would have been a pain in the arse. I'm happy to be beneath Gareth, in a gay kind of way.

N. (nickdastoor), Sunday, 15 June 2003 12:20 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm glad I'm 6,000 miles away from mark s today, because I'm wearing a pink shirt & flipflops. ;-) I think most sandals are fine on guys when it's really warm- who wants to be wearing socks & sneakers when it's 85?

lyra (lyra), Sunday, 15 June 2003 14:12 (twenty-two years ago)

I actually NEED to wear sandals as my left toe is rotting away Bob Marley style as we speak. I'm getting treated on it with Cipro, which is also used to treat Anthrax and other assorted nasties. I accidentally banged it against a desk and am now running the risk of it becoming gangrenous. It sucks, 'cause I can't leave me house (much), or bang it some more.

Francis Watlington, Sunday, 15 June 2003 14:40 (twenty-two years ago)

And I was just about to say that men with distorted toes or rotting, blackened toe-nails should KEEP THEIR'S HIDDEN.

Lara (Lara), Sunday, 15 June 2003 15:01 (twenty-two years ago)

I always wear sandals/slides when possible. I hate having my ankles covered.

That Girl (thatgirl), Sunday, 15 June 2003 16:15 (twenty-two years ago)

Women with distorted toes are just fine obv.

Sean (Sean), Sunday, 15 June 2003 19:26 (twenty-two years ago)

Wear a pair of these for a few hours;
http://www.bikesport.de/ifma/sidi.jpg
and sandles will be about the only thing you want to put on your feet afterwards.

David Beckhouse (David Beckhouse), Sunday, 15 June 2003 19:46 (twenty-two years ago)

The scandal of sandals.

Rockist Scientist, Sunday, 15 June 2003 21:23 (twenty-two years ago)

I had an aversion to sandals (except at the beach) until a few years ago. Not as intense as your aversion -- I mean, other people wearing them didn't bother me -- but I just couldn't see myself wearing them. Then I picked up some Teva knock-offs and started wearing them occasionally, and danged if I didn't take to them like a, um, sandal-wearer to sandals. Now I wear sandals pretty much all summer. The secret? They're comfortable. Wear sandals for a few days and then put your feet in some socks and shoes and it feels like you're being smothered. And if the price of comfort is being looked down on by the non-sandal-wearing elite, well, my sandaled brethren and I will just have to live with the injustice. Cast off your argyles! Feet want to be free! etc.

JesseFox (JesseFox), Sunday, 15 June 2003 21:47 (twenty-two years ago)

I love my sandals - and yes, they are BIRKENSTOCKS. I mean, what the hell else are you going to wear with shorts? Shoes AND SOCKS? Or, even worse, SHOES WITH NO SOCKS?!

Mr. Diamond (diamond), Sunday, 15 June 2003 21:51 (twenty-two years ago)

Bare feet?

N. (nickdastoor), Sunday, 15 June 2003 22:57 (twenty-two years ago)

B-b-but shorts are even worse than sandals!

Sommermute (Wintermute), Sunday, 15 June 2003 23:12 (twenty-two years ago)

Yes, I had forgetten how many women want men to sweat uncomfortably unless they have the thighs of David Beckham.

N. (nickdastoor), Sunday, 15 June 2003 23:20 (twenty-two years ago)

What the hell is wrong with shorts? What do you go hiking in? Jeans? But for leisure wear, I'd like togas even better. Why did we forsake such civilised clothing?

JesseFox (JesseFox), Sunday, 15 June 2003 23:32 (twenty-two years ago)

sandals if necessary. barefoot if possible.

gaz (gaz), Sunday, 15 June 2003 23:38 (twenty-two years ago)

i like sandals.

minna (minna), Monday, 16 June 2003 01:50 (twenty-two years ago)

Christ,with the shorts thing again.

ILE sandals/shorts ban vs the ILM sax ban. BICKER!

Hunter (Hunter), Monday, 16 June 2003 02:57 (twenty-two years ago)

imagine this: a sax player wearing shorts and sandals. my head would explode.

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Monday, 16 June 2003 02:59 (twenty-two years ago)

You stole my follow up! Tight-ass brown shorts. I'll name him ANTI-ILX.

Hunter (Hunter), Monday, 16 June 2003 03:03 (twenty-two years ago)

I saw him last night on a Jimmy Buffett TV concert special.

Mr. Diamond (diamond), Monday, 16 June 2003 03:04 (twenty-two years ago)

Millar (Millar), Monday, 16 June 2003 03:30 (twenty-two years ago)

*gasp*

I've just changed my mind about flag desecration laws. OFF TO GITMO!

Hunter (Hunter), Monday, 16 June 2003 03:33 (twenty-two years ago)

HIPPIES!!

(i do have a pair of timberland sandals, though!)

Tad (llamasfur), Monday, 16 June 2003 03:34 (twenty-two years ago)

i like saxaphones

minna (minna), Monday, 16 June 2003 04:33 (twenty-two years ago)

i'll second mr. diamond's call. Birkenstocks are super comfy!

Chris Radford (Chris Radford), Monday, 16 June 2003 04:35 (twenty-two years ago)

Hah, Millar, I was going to post that photo!

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 16 June 2003 04:43 (twenty-two years ago)

(btw i think this thread is about gareth being insecure about his tiny feet :))

minna (minna), Monday, 16 June 2003 05:00 (twenty-two years ago)

ha ha, I'm off to buy shorts at lunchtime, I love wearing shorts

chris (chris), Monday, 16 June 2003 07:36 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm off to buy a saxophone and a stars and stripes... whatever that is.

N. (nickdastoor), Monday, 16 June 2003 08:15 (twenty-two years ago)

I like sandals & the colour pink, do I have to leave now?

Pinkpanther (Pinkpanther), Monday, 16 June 2003 09:19 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm with Gareth here, sandals on men are the work of Satan, with or without socks. On women I am willing to overlook this to an extent.

Big brown leather sandals are the absolute worse.

Unless swimming or on the beach, short wearing should be discouraged, although obviously sometimes a necessary evil.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Monday, 16 June 2003 10:33 (twenty-two years ago)

mmm, just bought myself a lovely pair of cargo shorts, in grey, they'll look lovely with my sandals.

chris (chris), Monday, 16 June 2003 11:09 (twenty-two years ago)

worst sandals ever:
http://www.cpsc.gov/cpscpub/prerel/prhtml99/99007.jpg

Ten times worse on a female.

Chris V. (Chris V), Monday, 16 June 2003 11:15 (twenty-two years ago)

they are pretty nasty, yes

chris (chris), Monday, 16 June 2003 11:19 (twenty-two years ago)

they look nice to me *hides feet*

mark s (mark s), Monday, 16 June 2003 11:46 (twenty-two years ago)

Mark S - show your feet immediately!

Pinkpanther (Pinkpanther), Monday, 16 June 2003 11:48 (twenty-two years ago)

ie almost all "normal" shoes are WAY uglier than that

(normally i wd also be playing the "at least i'm comfy" card also, but i stubbed my toe really badly 10 days ago and am still simping so eh)

mark s (mark s), Monday, 16 June 2003 11:48 (twenty-two years ago)

simping AND limping

mark s (mark s), Monday, 16 June 2003 11:49 (twenty-two years ago)

there, there. *squeezes Mark S' shoulder*

Pinkpanther (Pinkpanther), Monday, 16 June 2003 11:52 (twenty-two years ago)

but at least my shoes aren't ugly like everyone else's!! *defiant*

mark s (mark s), Monday, 16 June 2003 11:56 (twenty-two years ago)

Indeed!

Pinkpanther (Pinkpanther), Monday, 16 June 2003 11:59 (twenty-two years ago)

rosemary (rosemary), Monday, 16 June 2003 13:16 (twenty-two years ago)

i'm with gareth here, except rather than contempt i pity the fule who wears sandals. toes are not an attractive part of anyone's body and really shouldn't be shown in public at all. flip-flops are permissible beside the pool or sea when the ground is hot and that's it.

angela (angela), Monday, 16 June 2003 13:32 (twenty-two years ago)

I feel so sorry for you peoples' feet.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Monday, 16 June 2003 13:38 (twenty-two years ago)

"toes are not an attractive part of anyone's body" = not true

mark s (mark s), Monday, 16 June 2003 13:41 (twenty-two years ago)

they just remind me of stubby deformed fingers.

angela (angela), Monday, 16 June 2003 14:06 (twenty-two years ago)

that is an argument for sandals not against them: body parts have feelings too you know!!

mark s (mark s), Monday, 16 June 2003 14:14 (twenty-two years ago)

my parents were visiting me this weekend and my dad arrived wearing shorts and teva-like sandals with socks. i tried to gently correct him, saying something like 'i know those are fine in michigan, but if you wear those in london EVERYONE will know you're a big tourist...' but he and my mom were adamant that they were ok. and they're normally quite fashionable, for parents.

yeah. sandals with socks are pretty awful. especially with shorts. just to repeat what many people have already said.

colette (a2lette), Tuesday, 17 June 2003 15:12 (twenty-two years ago)

I hate looking at ugly feet, and the majority of people have them despite considering themselves the exception. Cover them up!

Nicole (Nicole), Tuesday, 17 June 2003 16:12 (twenty-two years ago)

Since you're the second or third person to mention it - what in god's name are you doing staring at people's feet?

Mr. Diamond (diamond), Tuesday, 17 June 2003 16:15 (twenty-two years ago)

I don't, but if you're out in public it is inevitable that you are going to catch sight of someone's mangy paws at one point or another.

Nicole (Nicole), Tuesday, 17 June 2003 16:18 (twenty-two years ago)

my toes are nicer than most corporate 12-lizard shoes and THAT IS A FACT!!

mark s (mark s), Tuesday, 17 June 2003 16:21 (twenty-two years ago)

i'm still laughing at the 'gareth's day at the beach' pic

stevem (blueski), Tuesday, 17 June 2003 16:24 (twenty-two years ago)

I am getting a pair and will be waring them throughout the summer. its not abt being 'good' or a 'bad' item.

its the practical in this heat so it becomes the RIGHT and ONLY thing to do.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Tuesday, 17 June 2003 16:25 (twenty-two years ago)

I have to admit, my first impressions of someone are often largely based on what shoes (and socks, if applicable) they are wearing. So, yes, I probably do go around staring at people's feet.

caitlin (caitlin), Tuesday, 17 June 2003 16:25 (twenty-two years ago)

you can't the horribly tacky photo spread in it's entirety but

http://www.nytimes.com/2003/06/17/fashion/17DRES.html

Mary (Mary), Tuesday, 17 June 2003 18:50 (twenty-two years ago)

sorry about that

http://www.nytimes.com/2003/06/17/fashion/17DRES.html

Mary (Mary), Tuesday, 17 June 2003 18:52 (twenty-two years ago)

I read the nytimes story earlier today, it only fueled my loathing of sandals.

Nicole (Nicole), Tuesday, 17 June 2003 18:55 (twenty-two years ago)

mark s wore some sandals on friday merely to punish me. i know it was his way of teasing though, and i accept that, and i allowed it to pass with only minimal disapproval on my part

gareth (gareth), Monday, 23 June 2003 13:55 (twenty-two years ago)

i decided to put proper shoes on today to protect my possibly broken toe from restubbing a THIRD time

as a result i feel ill *washes two aspirins down with a swig of coke*

(gareth's shoes were uglier than my feet, as predicted)

mark s (mark s), Monday, 23 June 2003 14:11 (twenty-two years ago)

sandals are aesthetically unacceptable for all men (except jesus). women can occasionally pull them off, but even then i would rather NOT see your feet.

j fail (cenotaph), Monday, 23 June 2003 14:14 (twenty-two years ago)

I AM PUNK ROCK I SPIT ON YOUR NICEY-NICE "AESTHETICS"

feet rock u r all doilies

mark s (mark s), Monday, 23 June 2003 14:17 (twenty-two years ago)

two years pass...
So I'm in Charles de Gaulle (where I missed my flight due to RER fuckups) and I see this ad based on the premise that cowboy boots = cool, sandals = not, and now I want to engage in some 'action social' of my own.

Why does gareth not accept this part of the californian imperative?

gabbneb (gabbneb), Tuesday, 4 April 2006 19:01 (twenty years ago)

he is from the north,

what are the sandals options in CdG

how are you getting home?

Ed (dali), Tuesday, 4 April 2006 19:05 (twenty years ago)

ihttp://theband.hiof.no/band_pictures/erin_sebo/theband3.html

I had a pair of sandals made by a craftsmen in my neighborhood called Yong, in emulation of this classic look. The Band had the best style of anybody in the world, ESPECIALLY THEIR COOL-ASS SANDALS....

andy --, Tuesday, 4 April 2006 19:11 (twenty years ago)

Reef sandals from Brasilia, even Gareth would approve.

Steve Shasta (Steve Shasta), Tuesday, 4 April 2006 19:50 (twenty years ago)

But wouldn't someone from the north be in some (some) sense akin to those guys who walk around in sandals in the winter?

(I have a flight out tomorrow AM, rendering the cost merely not-terrible rather than super-cheap.)

gabbneb (gabbneb), Tuesday, 4 April 2006 19:52 (twenty years ago)
