Am I the only insane person who absolutely must get up at 8am on Sundays to watch Corrie?

I know I'm a big loser. I'm just afraid I'll miss the moment when Gail finds out that Richard is a psychotic.

guess so...

cybele (cybele), Monday, 16 June 2003 19:47 (twenty-two years ago)

aren't you living in Jamaica?

stevem (blueski), Monday, 16 June 2003 20:46 (twenty-two years ago)

I did the big change thing--I gave away my apartment and all my stuff, quit my job, and moved to Kingston, Jamaica to do development work for two years. Things didn't quite work out (UNDERSTATEMENT OF THE YEAR--PERHAPS DECADE) and now I'm back home in Montreal. Nothing--and I mean nothing--will really shock me about my life now or, probably, ever.

I'm still recovering from having to come home.

cybele (cybele), Monday, 16 June 2003 20:55 (twenty-two years ago)

dam i was really hoping they showed Corrie in Jamaica - maybe they do (please god let it be dubbed into patois)

stevem (blueski), Monday, 16 June 2003 20:59 (twenty-two years ago)

Hahahh cybele, I too used to tape the 9 am showings (its at 8 now???). I try not to tell too many people about it cause they either laugh or tell me I'd get along great with their grandmother. No one seems to understand that it's not a soap opera in the american sense of the term. I've gotten lazy, so I just catch the 3pm showings whenever I can (by the way, has she found out yet?)

Needing to watch Corrie is indeed insane. Yes.

ChristineSH (chrissie1068), Tuesday, 17 June 2003 00:49 (twenty-two years ago)

My god, yes you are!

Pinkpanther (Pinkpanther), Tuesday, 17 June 2003 08:14 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah, it's nuts, but the incredible difference from lame Yankee soap operas about rich people and companies with names like "Jabot" makes it near enthralling. There aren't too many shows on American (or Canadian) TV where the characters look like real people. There are very very few women of Shelley's size--and if the producers do pick a slightly more normal lookin' chick, they put her on a show called "Almost Perfect."

Over 15 years ago I was obsessed with Degrassi (as many people were and are) and the reruns ended on CBC some time ago. With Coronation Street, I've found as close as I can get to Degrassi (and don't even mention the shiny happy "Degrassi:The Next Generation")--it's even on at around the same times.

cybele (cybele), Tuesday, 17 June 2003 12:46 (twenty-two years ago)

No one on Corrie could equal Joey Jeremiah.

*toys w.feeble degrassi deep space nine gag only types nice instead of nine, "mind" wanders elsewhere*

mark s (mark s), Tuesday, 17 June 2003 12:53 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah, but aside from the fact that most of the cast look crap, it still has the same old soapy cliches and bad storylines and course-correction of characters to fit sensational plots, etc. Which is okay, I guess, but it's not even funny anymore. When EastEnders is consistently more amusing, I think the signs are bad...

(I used to be a big fan, actually. But it just became a habit. *sigh*)

ChristineSH (chrissie1068), Tuesday, 17 June 2003 12:56 (twenty-two years ago)

That IS the point. Most of the cast looks like random normal people...much like Degrassi. They have people of different ages--not just some random old bag that's been on the show since godknowswhen--like Catherine from Y&R. I haven't watched Y&R since grade 9, but I'm sure she's still on. Also, the "soapy-cliches" are nowhere near as bad as stuff on GH, DOOL, Y&R, B&B, etc. The sensational storylines are super tame in comparison as well. The use of humour is also bizarre--coming from a Yankee soap background. Also, having tried to watch Canadian attempts at the same type of thing (think "Riverdale"), it is clear that Coronation Street seems to be doing something much better.

cybele (cybele), Tuesday, 17 June 2003 13:02 (twenty-two years ago)

I don't know any of those shows, so maybe my appreciation of how bad it can get is a bit blunt. Corrie used to be a lot better. It also used to be a hell of a lot more restrained, believe it or not! So when you see a show built up a certain way, for a long time, it's hard not to see any attempts to make it more sensational or whatever as being a bit pathetic, really. I always thought it was the best of the UK soaps, but today, I feel it's one of the weaker ones, all sentiment aisde.

ChristineSH (chrissie1068), Tuesday, 17 June 2003 13:09 (twenty-two years ago)

I can only imagine Coronation Street looks better when viewed at a great distance from England. It used to be a religion in my house, and for that reason I haven't watched it properly since I left home, but isn't it horribly hammy compared to Eastenders?

Archel (Archel), Tuesday, 17 June 2003 13:09 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh, Riverdale was an abomination! Seriously, it was probably the worst thing I have ever saw on television. Mark S. would have loved it.

Nicole (Nicole), Tuesday, 17 June 2003 13:23 (twenty-two years ago)

Eastenders is unavailable for Canadians without super expensive cable services...All I gots is Corrie--so I guess I'm in the unfortunate position of not knowing any better...
Nicole--only thing worse than "Riverdale" is "madison."

cybele (cybele), Tuesday, 17 June 2003 14:58 (twenty-two years ago)

I've never even heard of Madison! I guess I should be glad, if it is worse than Riverdale.
