Why was this when one 'came of age'? Anyone know the origin of it?

N. (nickdastoor), Tuesday, 17 June 2003 10:53 (twenty-two years ago)

I have no idea, BUT my 21st year was mentalist and not entirely pleasant. All the things wrong with me now are as a result of that year (and most of the previous one), even though I enjoyed it at the time. Some of it.

There's some nonsense about 'key to the door' regarding the whole coming-of-age thing though. Fuck knows what that's about. Emma turns 21 in a month.

it's close to the age that people become conscious for the first time.

Someone should probably warn Ronan then:)

it's all about 23. (i'm hoping.) numerologically speaking, you understand. 23 is the number of power. i turned 23 last week. i'm waiting for the power to kick in. can't be long now, nope. remember, 23.

twenty-three.
23.

21 was horrible. I'd had a horrible preceding year, inc. the death of my nan. Embarrassing, too, on reflection -- mom threw a party for me, sprung it on me, and I decided to not show up and sulk in my bedroom instead. Looking back, that was a shitty thing to do, and I still feel bad about it.

21 did seem to be the turning point, though, after which a year suddenly seemed like five minutes rather than forever. Maybe that was just coincidental.

21 was my first experience with alcholol. the night ended with me eating a hot pepper and chugging milk to eliviate the burning, which inturn lead to my puking out of an explorer on the highway. cheers.

one month passes...
is 21 when most people who go to university finish their degrees and go out and get jobs? i doubt this is the answer, but i think that's probably true for many of my friends.

I heard it had something to do with the maturation of the liver, but I'm not sure.

Actually, it has more to do with drunk teenagers killing people with their cars:

I heard it had something to do with the maturation of the liver, but I'm not sure.

Imagine my panic when I first misread that as masturbation of the liver.

Does it have anything to do with old-skool voting age?

Matt DC (Matt DC), Friday, 30 April 2004 23:07 (twenty-two years ago)

The old-skool voting age was 21, but I think that was because it was the traditional age of maturity, rather than the other way round.
