The Mullet: Hairstyle of the Gods?

The most ridiculous hairstyle ever, or defiant prole style? Michael Bolton + Billy Ray Cyrus/ Chris Waddle, Charlie Nicholas + most of German 1990 World Cup team (note attempted trans-atlanticism). Loved + loathed, can I be alone in once having had one? "Cut the sides, don't touch the back".... or not?

stevo, Sunday, 16 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Not alone -- I wasn't too sure *what* I was trying to do with my hair in the late eighties/early nineties, but in retrospect it fell victim to a weird sort of mullet love. Then I just grew everything out and found inner peace.

Ned Raggett, Sunday, 16 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

suddenly i just got this vision of ned as homer in the episode when he becomes a hippie...

"homer j., will you teach us to make love?" "lather, rinse, and repeat. always repeat."

jess, Sunday, 16 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Go in peace, my son.

Ned Raggett, Sunday, 16 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Never got a mullet, which is interesting considering my metalhead teenage years. Maybe 'cause it was too low-class (no offense meant, Ned).

Anyone who likes mullet-culture, tho', should check out Edison, New Jersey, where mullets, toner-colored Camaros, hair-metal, and spandex still reign supreme (among the white people there, anyway). It's like Land of the Lost, 1980's style.

Tadeusz Suchodolski, Sunday, 16 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

mullets are funny. anyone been to www.mulletsgalore.com?

what i don't like is the new "ironic mullet" trend. anyone from nz will identify julia deans from fur patrol as the culprit for this abominable fashion. since fur patrol got huge, all these dunedin hairdressers are sporting her do: a black mullet with a peroxide fringe. its stoopid. it ain't ironic. its moronic.

what i wanna know is, is the "ironic mullet" a nz thing or is it a global trend?

di, Sunday, 16 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Mullets were also big in the lesbian community. Even now, you go the West Village and you'll still see a female denizen or two with the mullet-cut.

Maybe Anthony can explain what's up with that.

Tadeusz Suchodolski, Sunday, 16 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I know about gay men not lesbians

anthony, Monday, 17 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

The thing about the mullet is it doesn't look good. It doesn't look good on an ironic slumming-it fashionista, sure, but it doesn't look good on a defiant prole either. It's a nasty cut.

Mind you, good haircuts are overrated (but then I would say that).

Tom, Monday, 17 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

If there are people who think that having mullets is somehow ironically cool because they say so, then truly they are the aphex twin of haircuts.

Ronan, Monday, 17 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

There was a place south of Perth when I was over there (I think called Rockingham) and the entire population seemed to have mullets. There was also a large number of lumberjack shirts with the sleeves torn off and they all seemed to drive the same car! Strange place.

cabbage, Monday, 17 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

What, like midget clowns? Did it come in half and they all rolled around? Kewl!!

Did you know that you're insufferable?

Melissa W, Monday, 17 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Mel and Ronan sitting in a tree...

Actually judging by the music Ronan likes - Spiritualized, Ryan Adams, etc. - he doesn't like music with jokes in it very much. The Aphex Twin's music has lots of jokes in it.

Tom, Monday, 17 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Some of which to be fair may well be on the buyer.

Tom, Monday, 17 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

b'dum tisssch

and no it wasn't one big car, they all drove the same make of car, some sort of Holden.

cabbage, Monday, 17 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I like jokes, the thing is more that I just think Aphex Twin ranks about as highly as Phil Juppitus for comic talent. I mean as far as I'll take liking jokes in music is humorous samples, the Beastie Boys have many, the Avalanches too I guess. Also Beck is quite funny in general. I'm really sorry for being insufferable by the way.

go edison! having been there 3 or 4 times in the past month (on expeditions to vintage vinyl to purchase various items of the black metal and some prog rock, disco inferno, dial, etc.) i can vouch for this statement - you see fat, gone-to-pot guys browsing the maadl sections (not realizing all the alcatraz and autograph cds are in the used area) in hideously bleached and stretched t-shirts with 3- d laser ray-traced wolf and eagle heads on them. aroo!

your null fame, Monday, 17 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

ugly irony is not good irony.

Maria, Monday, 17 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

What are the historical precednts for the mullet? Surely Bowie's Ziggy cut was an early example.

And the non-Weller Jam guys sport suspiciously mullettesque concotions on their heads.

fritz, Monday, 17 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Jaromir Jagr, arguably the best player in hockey, donned the mullet for many years. I believe he is the reason it became known as "hockey hair." And Bono used to have mullet like hair in the Sunday Bloody Sunday days.

bnw, Monday, 17 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

One of my best friends in high school had a mullet. We all cheered and had a party when he decided to get it cut off (1990). Another was still sporting one the last time I saw him in 1996.

Dan Perry, Monday, 17 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Cute German exchange students with nonironic mullets were all the rage last year. Okay so maybe just for me Cute Teutonic Mullet Girl was.

Mr Noodles, Tuesday, 18 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

one year passes...
I got a nice little flyer from Chank Diesel today and holy fuck he's got the cutest little ironic mullet. Very tasteful.

I think I want one.

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Thursday, 10 April 2003 02:08 (twenty-three years ago)

Even Chank's logo is an ironic mullet of design of sorts:

It's beautiful, too.

God, I sound like Andy Warhol.

The Mullet: Hairstyle of the Ohmigods!

Still considered fash in Adelaide, South Australia, by all accounts. You don't get a game in the SA State cricket team without one.
