Things to do in Bergen when you're there

Any advice on spending a few days in Bergen greatly appreciated - places to eat, drink, stay, record shop, you know. And how to see a fjord or two

climb floyen, the big mountain above ity and eat in the restaurant, it's ace, or if you're feeling less energetic get the cable car up and then tumble all the way down (fortunately it was snowing when we did this)

Cafe Opera was a nice place for a (very expensive) beer, they sold cigarettes individually too.

There's a good bar near the arts school, can't for the life of me remember it's name though.

Modern art museum is next to a lake and is good, also very near it is an excellent charity shop.

also if you have the time, go to the train station and get the norway in a nutshell ticket, beautiful train journey to Voss (iirc) then down to the fjord on another train. Ferry round the fjord to another place past all the little churches and cottages on the bank, then a coach back to Bergen. You can do it in a day but we did it in two and stayed at the hostel on the banks of the fjord.

It was about a hundred and twenty pounds round about 5 years ago, which isn't that pricey when you consider that it's about a fiver a pint!!

Take a coat! It is apparently one of the rainiest places ever (all the tourist shops sell amusing novelty bottles of 'rain from bergen') and I only had summer clothes and sandals.

Go to the fish market and buy yummy gravadlax and look at the nice old wooden buildings.

Go on a boat tour to some fjords.

Go to the leprosy museum. No, really. It is the old lepers' hospital and though it has some gruesome pics it is quite atmospheric. Plus, where else in the world has a leprosy museum?

OK, fair point. http://www.bergen-guide.com/ might have some useful tips - they tell you about the world's biggest gingerbread town!

a cd would probably cost about 200 pounds or something anyway. I can't remember seeing any shops when I was there to be honest

bergen, norway. tell me about it. where did people stay when they were there? seems to be a lot of small accomodation. also, anyone flown into haugesund before?

yes, it was snowing so bad we didn't see the ground until we saw the top of a house near the end of the runway, then we had a snow plough take us to the terminal - it was great.
