Julia Roberts: Classic or Dud?

It's obvious what the concensus will be, but, damn my eyes, she was GOOD in _Erin Brockovich_. I credit that to Steven Soderbergh, of course (just as I credit him for making J. Lo GOOD in _Out of Sight_), but she was, really. Everything else can go to hell, of course.

David Raposa, Thursday, 20 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

So, what do you NEW ANSWERS think?

David Raposa, Thursday, 20 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

She shares the same birthday as me. Apart from that, I don't understand WHY people run to the cinema to see her on the big ole screen. She was... okay in Steel Magnolia though.

nathalie, Thursday, 20 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

dud dud dud. My sister-in-law adores her. Which I don't understand. And my SIL is black, which makes it even harder to understand.

Samantha, Thursday, 20 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Oh yeah, I think all blonde people dislike Julia. *scratches head* What's your point, Samantha?

nathalie, Thursday, 20 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I have even thought about her acting abilities, but can offer you thoughts on her attractiveness if you like. When she burst on the scene with 'Mystic Pizza', I mean 'Pretty Woman' I couldn't understand why people fancied her. She was just like 'yeach' with that big hair and big mouth. It wasn't till 'Notting Hill' that my feelings changed. Now I can see she's quite hot. It's a bit like what happened with Nicole Kidman, but much less so. I think I always had an intrinsic dislike of US 80s style ideas of glamour and fashion eventually came around to my way of thinking. Which is part of the reason I hate 'I Love the 80s' style 'what were we like?'-ery.

Nick, Thursday, 20 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

It's because of her teeth. Or maybe one's admiration of Benjamin Bratt rubs off on Ms. Roberts?

David Raposa, Thursday, 20 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

My point is JR is so *white* that even most white people don't identify with her. I find it odd that my SIL does.

Samantha, Thursday, 20 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

So white? What does this mean?

Nick, Thursday, 20 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

So mainstream, middle of the road, apple-pie and baseball games that said person or thing becomes a caricture of herself.

Samantha, Thursday, 20 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Hmm.. I see what you're saying, but under this kind of talk a middle of the road, apple-pie 'n' baseball loving black person would end up being called 'white' and I imagine that might piss them off quite a lot.

Nick, Thursday, 20 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I think the correct term would be oreo. and yes I imagine it would piss them off but then don't all deregatory names piss off the person who's their target? (btw, i do love and respect my sister in law.)

Samantha, Thursday, 20 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I see what you're saying, but under this kind of talk a middle of the road, apple-pie 'n' baseball loving black person would end up being called 'white' and I imagine that might piss them off quite a lot.

Believe me, IT DOES. Except I don't really like baseball all that much.

Dan Perry, Thursday, 20 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

She shows gums when she smiles = Dud.

DavidM, Thursday, 20 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Julia Roberts has gums???????

Dan Perry, Thursday, 20 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

She's horrid, like the sort of horrid that only comes along once in a lifetime.

Ally, Thursday, 20 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I think she's pretty, and having sat through "Erin Brockovich" on an airplane, she's not half bad as an actress, either. I won't go so far as to say I'm a fan, though.

Sean, Thursday, 20 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

see my views on deepak chopra

Geoff, Thursday, 20 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

On talk shows she is brilliant.

Tracer Hand, Thursday, 20 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

She's a perfectly good actress but becoz she is "pretty" in a centrist kinda way she gets stuck in movies where she has little amazing to do, and some clown directing who doesn't think to try her. If and when I murder the entire cast of 4Weds, she and Marmalade Atkins will be last, and let off if the moulimix jams.

(S.Callow = first, but that's for repeat offences above and beyond. Then Grant obv; then Hannah...)

mark s, Thursday, 20 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Mark, surely you aren't talking about Block-O-Wood MacDowell?? The woman is a good actress in about the same sense that anthrax is a good actress.

Dan Perry, Thursday, 20 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

May I be the first to enter armpit hair into the equation? Dud.

Madchen, Thursday, 20 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Dan I don't know what I'm talking about. What's that Wim Wnders film called w. Bill Pullman, Gabriel Byrne and Andi MaCD? I was sitting in the cinema and my sister asked me who my least favourite playa- thesps evah were, and I said those three, and the ad for the Wenders came up, and she refused to believe I didn't know. But I didn't.

mark s, Thursday, 20 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Good call, Tracer. I like her when she's on Letterman. Otherwise, she is pretty horrid.

bnw, Thursday, 20 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

You murder Marmalade Atkins over my dead body Sinker.

Richard Tunnicliffe, Thursday, 20 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

"It is a far far better thing etc," murmured RickyT to himself, as he hurled his adoring body into the moulimix mechanism, jamming it to eternal buggery as planned...

Extract fr. A Tale of Two Idiots

mark s, Thursday, 20 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

if it wasn't for her mouth being so large she would be too dull to be pretty. she is pretty but i have never been impressed by her acting (in all 3 or less movies i've seen with her).

Maria, Thursday, 20 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I heart Julia. She seems really sweet.

dave q, Thursday, 20 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

So completely and utterly horridly NASTY that she is one of the only people in the known universe that I find the appeal of utterly unfathomable on every possible level. I don't get it at all, 'cept for the fact people are often taken in by a cheesy grin.

Erin Brockovich is the only movie she's even been close to decent in, and I think Soderbergh really deserves more of the credit for that than her.

EW: Those rumors had a life of their own.
JR: See, that's what's scary. Others said I was losing my job because I had a problem with drugs. And this started, I can only assume, because I was so thin. And it's just absurd, you know. I don't know how anybody who would do drugs could function. I don't — nor have I ever done drugs — and I guess it's boring to be sort of a young actor in Hollywood and not have a drug problem. Well, then, I'm boring, and that's cool with me, because I've got clear skin and clean arms, and I'm just thin. Period. The end. Quit picking on me, you know.

EW: There was never a drug problem?
JR: No, there were never any drugs. Never. That's why it's so absurd and frustrating. Why should I have to explain something that's never been an issue in my life? But I'm forced to, because every paper in the country is writing that I'm a drug addict.

...

EW: This is a very ''guys'' movie. Except for Maggie Smith and the mermaids and a few others, almost everyone is male. And you were working on a separate stage from everyone else. Did it feel like you were working on a different movie?
JR: I didn't take it personally or anything. But we had fun (on my stage). We had ''whippets.'' I mean, it was just people being stupid.

EW: What's a ''whippet''?
JR: I don't know if you hold it upside down or whatever — but you can spray air (nitrous oxide or laughing gas, actually) from a whipped cream can and it gives you a buzz or a rush or something. All I know is that it never worked right for anybody because they were always spraying whipped cream all over the place.

Money Monster is done with some skill, and it at least made me think of The China Syndrome in passing (mostly the big scene at the end). The improbabilities are so many that they stopped registering at a certain point, lots of sanctimony too, and Jack O'Connell really hams it up. I was going to say that it seemed really late for a film based on Jim Cramer, who I used to occasionally watch with a mixture of amusement and disbelief, but I had no idea his show was still on the air.

Julia Roberts can do no wrong.

You have to be a complete To Sir with Love mush-head, and helplessly in thrall to Julia Roberts, to find yourself moved by Mona Lisa Smile. I don't believe in the idea of guilty pleasures, but I do believe in embarrassed pleasures.

Still haven't watched it! I think I'm resisting because I love the idealized movie-star version of her...I do know she makes me feel protective. Dominic West from The Wire is her love interest for part of Mona Lisa Smile, and all I could think was "You're just not worthy, guy."

i rewatched Pretty Woman recently having not seen it since first released when i was a teenager — as a teen i thought it was ok but just dumb Cinderella fluff mostly & I also hated Richard Gere bc of how creepily ga-ga my Mom & all moms & female teachers were about him

As a late 40’s grownup I really enjoyed it and found it had more depth than i could have appreciated as a teen <3

Also *highly* recommend Katrina Longworth’s analysis of this film in her You Must Remember This podcast. (It’s the reason why I rewatched it)

my favorite Julias are Mystic Pizza, My Best Friend’s Wedding, Runaway Bride, Erin Brokovich (theyre called BOOBS, Al), Pretty Woman and Ocean’s Eleven (she has such good chemistry w Clooney)

and Steel Magnolias
(BLUSH AND BASHFUL)

werewolves of laudanum (VegemiteGrrl), Wednesday, 27 November 2024 19:59 (one year ago)

werewolves of laudanum (VegemiteGrrl), Wednesday, 27 November 2024 20:01 (one year ago)

Over the last year or two, I've seen a few Julia Roberts movies that never interested me when they were originally released but I have more time for now. Even when the narratives are dumb -- My Best Friend's Wedding and Notting Hill come to mind -- she's a fun, charismatic screen presence.

jaymc, Wednesday, 27 November 2024 20:04 (one year ago)

How much of your appreciation of the film was based in Julia Roberts and what she brought to the role she was given?

This is thr nature of starpower.

the talented mr pimply (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Wednesday, 27 November 2024 20:17 (one year ago)

I agree. The C/D distinction for an actor like Roberts is mostly asking does she make the grade as an A-list movie star. I'm not wholly smitten with her, but she definitely brings A-list chops to what she does and has undeniable screen presence.

more difficult than I look (Aimless), Wednesday, 27 November 2024 20:37 (one year ago)

i think what Julia at her best is doing something similarly skilled as what Meg Ryan does - they both bring this ineffable charm & rhythym & style to the roles, qualities so subtle it’s dismissed as just them being themselves in these “womens movies”. but the thing is NO ONE ELSE can do what they do in these wholly artificial settings. They make it all seem so perfectly natural - their humanity, their willingness to ugly-cry, to pratfall or do dumb faces or be unlikeable in addition to incredible natural beauty - that is their skill.

CLASSIC

werewolves of laudanum (VegemiteGrrl), Wednesday, 27 November 2024 21:01 (one year ago)

VG: you've probably seen it, but if not, highly recommend The Pelican Brief. Roberts and Washington together pretty much define star magnetism for me. I just wish they'd gotten (been allowed to get?) romantically involved in the film--they walk right up to the edge of that and go no further.

Just the other day I read that Denzel Washington's character was white in the book and was meant to be played by some bland 90s white dude (so bland I can't even remember who was chosen) but Roberts insisted that Denzel be cast. He wasn't a big enough star for that role yet in Hollywood thinking, but her plan worked!

Things I have liked her in:

Notting Hill, Erin Brockovich, Ocean's Eleven, Duplicity, Homecoming, Leave The World Behind (dumb but enjoyable enough)

Instead of create and send out, it pull back and consume (unperson), Wednesday, 27 November 2024 22:51 (one year ago)

Probably my favorite performance by Roberts, which I haven't seen mentioned yet, is in Confessions Of A Dangerous Mind.

Drew Barrymore's best by a huge margin, too, give or take the opening of Scream.
