What is the best thing to eat all the time?

I'm so poor right now I'm eating Weetabix all the time. How long will I live? A bowl of Weetabix (or any other cereal) comes to about 30p, and I can get by on 2 or 3 bowls a day. What other meals might be more thrilling for the same price? Please answer before my line is disconnected.

David_X (David_X), Thursday, 7 August 2003 22:22 (twenty-two years ago)

I was going to say Jaffa cakes, or maybe Scotch eggs, but then I saw the price aspect so will say Tesco value spaghetti. Pasta, mmm.

Make a big vat of chili.

kirsten (kirsten), Thursday, 7 August 2003 22:30 (twenty-two years ago)

Quantity: ramen noodles
Quality: apples or whatever fruit is in season
Possible compromise: ramen noodles and an economy-size bag of frozen vegetables; add some of the vegetables to the noodles while they're cooking.

j.lu (j.lu), Thursday, 7 August 2003 22:32 (twenty-two years ago)

Udon noodles.

To eat as cheaply as can be done, you must have access to at least a hot plate. Buy dry beans and cook them. Ditto rice. Potatos are the ambrosia of the poor. Eat the skins, too. If you crave animal protein, the highest quality protein on the cheap is oftentimes eggs, at least this is true in the USA. Look for items that have been heavily reduced in price because they are near or past their expiration date, then eat them quickly.

Kenan Hebert (kenan), Friday, 8 August 2003 02:50 (twenty-two years ago)

miso soup, particular when it comes from that one shop that's just north of the campus and it's so good you'd crack open the head of your best mate to feast upon it from his noggin.

donna (donna), Friday, 8 August 2003 05:55 (twenty-two years ago)

Yep, veggies in season, coupled with bulk-bought rice, pasta and/or beans/lentils. You can make vats of veggie/bean soup and freeze them, add you get many of your nutrients.

Trayce (trayce), Friday, 8 August 2003 06:26 (twenty-two years ago)

Two dollars a package where I live.

maybe all those fat people suing mcdonalds have a point!

They don't but it' sdefinitely true that the shit is dirt-cheap and very tempting, given our biological predisposition to want to pack on pounds for winter.

Kenan Hebert (kenan), Friday, 8 August 2003 06:32 (twenty-two years ago)

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Friday, 8 August 2003 06:43 (twenty-two years ago)

good salad from dandelion leaves

But use the young leaves only--the big older ones are too bitter.

Christine 'Green Leafy Dragon' Indigo (cindigo), Friday, 8 August 2003 07:07 (twenty-two years ago)

"If we are talking about a 200kg squid, this is an animal with a 20g brain," he told New Scientist.

"It's not very bright and it is trying to coordinate a metre-long penis.

"He's going to get a bit confused."

Ain't that just the way.

Kenan Hebert (kenan), Friday, 8 August 2003 08:10 (twenty-two years ago)

heres a little tip for if you get sick of baked beans. saute an onion and some garlic, throw in your beans and a couple of chopped apples, some curry powder to your taste and voila: cheap baked beans that actually taste good.

apples, garlic bread, porridge (with brown sugar, of course). chip sandwiches. pasta with a few veges thrown in. salad sandwiches.

The Lady Ms Lurex (lucylurex), Friday, 8 August 2003 08:20 (twenty-two years ago)

those packets of noodles thayt you can get 6 for £1 at most oriental supermarkets - two packs of these strained, their flavouring sachets stirred in, then covered in soy and hot sauce are great, also the same amount of noodles cooked wet with flavouring sachets used to make a soup base, whatever vegetables you can get yr hands on, plus fried tofu/meat of yr choice is really good - i am not especially poor right now but eat these a lot anyway just coz they're nice. home-made soups are great and bean salads very good, too, baked potatoes, pasta etc. now, i may be wrong, but i'm assuming that as yr this skint, then yr probably not working, so you probably have time to visit your local markets/supermarkets and hunt out bargains, especially at closing time - just see what they have on for cheap, vegetables are easy come by at these times and cost virtually nothing - also buy a bag of oranges coz you really need vitamin c or you'll get sick, marmite is good for b vitamins ... all this and you should be ok and not much worse off... also, try to get friends/parents to cook for you, too - this is a great way of eating cheaply!

I third rice and beans. Its complete amino acids, plus you if you aren't desperately poor you can add all kinds of additional indgredients and spices to the party.
