Buffy the Vampire Slayer [gah, spoilers!!]

Hi,

My question is from "Conversations with Dead People" (I believe) when Joyce shows up in front of Dawn and says "When things are bad, Buffy won't choose you".

I'm racking my brain to find out what that means but can't. Could someone please explain what she was talking about?

Thanks,

I realized I would get that answer right after I clicked the "submit" button...

Tuomas (Tuomas), Friday, 15 August 2003 15:45 (twenty-two years ago)

Maybe it was "shmooze you", "shoo you", "shoot you" or "cruise you". That would make... even less sense, actually.

Sommermute (Wintermute), Friday, 15 August 2003 15:47 (twenty-two years ago)

It's probably either the First Evil fostering dissent or an allusion to Buffy trying to send Dawn away with Xander.

miloauckerman (miloauckerman), Friday, 15 August 2003 15:51 (twenty-two years ago)

does it matter because it turns out that's not actually Joyce anyway, it's the First (sorry if this is a spoiler for anyone)?

anthony kyle monday (akmonday), Friday, 15 August 2003 15:54 (twenty-two years ago)

I think it's in reference to the upcoming FOX series Who Wants to Marry an Out of Work Vampire Slayer?

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Friday, 15 August 2003 16:07 (twenty-two years ago)

Most obvious explanation = it's the first, lying, as bad things do every so often. There's a line I noticed in the very last episode though, where Dawn mentions choosing the wrong side because Buffy destroyed the mall, so could be a big build up for an ironic joke for anyone who remembers that episode.

lupine lupin (lupinelupin), Saturday, 16 August 2003 03:46 (twenty-two years ago)

There was the episode where Dawn thought she was one of the Slayerettes (a "chosen one") and it turned out to be the annoying chick instead ... but I think it was just the First fucking with her.

At the time, I didn't actually think Joyce was the First -- she acted considerably differently -- but the writer confirmed that she was.

Tep (ktepi), Saturday, 16 August 2003 03:50 (twenty-two years ago)

But to what end was the First fucking with her? Where was the payoff?

Kenan Hebert (kenan), Saturday, 16 August 2003 03:51 (twenty-two years ago)

Dissent in the ranks, damage to morale, screw with Dawn's head so Buffy can't rely on her ... it didn't actually pay off since the First lost, but ... wasn't the First's only real plan "wait for the cue from the writers because we have 18 episodes to fill in the middle of the season when nothing can actually happen"?

(Okay, confession, last season was an enormous disappointment for me, with a few bright spots.)

Tep (ktepi), Saturday, 16 August 2003 03:54 (twenty-two years ago)

I thought it was, for the most part, terribly written.

Kenan Hebert (kenan), Saturday, 16 August 2003 03:55 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah, exactly. Terribly planned, too, because so many of the empty (or, worse, "nothing happens except UH OH minor plot development right at the end!") episodes were obviously the result of the "no filler episodes" directive.

But it wasn't just the planning, cause even when nothing's happening there's room for good writing. Everyone was distracted by the phenomenon of ending the show, I guess.

the comic is like season 1 of the show all over again, writers trying to find their legs in the new medium with some nice bright spots

lol no one should let that director near anything that requires FX or a mythology-rich script.

Josh in Chicago, Tuesday, 4 February 2025 21:33 (one year ago)

you're basing that off her one Marvel film?

I didn't like Nomadland, either, but I haaaaaaated her Marvel film. Though I'll never know if that was a bad film she made better or a bad film she made worse.

Apparently the reboot is not happening. To which I say: Good. Come up with some new ideas you bums.

Josh in Chicago, Saturday, 14 March 2026 18:22 (two months ago)

Can’t believe she got eight Oscar noms this year for a sequel.

She was attached to direct, not write the thing.

Doesn’t make her any less a bum!

Plot twist, actually the reboot only appears to be dead; it's actually trapped in a hell dimension

calmer chameleon (Ye Mad Puffin), Sunday, 15 March 2026 09:39 (two months ago)

disappointing as I would have liked to see this. Zhao directed the pilot but there were rumors that it didn't turn out very well. I'm not sure why she works on these pop culture mainstays, this is not her forte, but maybe she just likes this stuff too?

I? not I! He! He! HIM! (akm), Monday, 16 March 2026 13:18 (two months ago)

By all reports she is a big Buffy fan and I imagine that's the reason she did it, since there can't be a ton of money there. will be interesting if she gets the Mission Impossible gig, as rumored

Vinnie, Monday, 16 March 2026 13:35 (two months ago)

Getting a big name to direct the pilot is a kinda common move, I somewhat doubt her direction would've made much of a difference either way as it usually translates into pretty anonymous work for hire. I don't mean that in a derogatory way tbc, someone has to do it.

I only know the Zuckermans’ work via Poker Face, but that suggests they were suitable for a witty adventure-of-the-week series with character throughlines and a flexible format, that wasn’t hidebound by its antecedents. Their other credits show them to be extremely professional at working with other people’s ideas (having multi-season runs on in-progress shows, being attached to adaptations of novels and Mythbusters at pilot stage), and skimming some interview intros it looks like they sold their first original in 2013 to USA network, and various others to legacy broadcasters as large as CBS and streamers as prominent as Peacock, in the decade between then and Poker Face.

Given the endless flow of new ideas that all of TV puts into active production after purchasing spec pilots by middle-aged women these days, we can definitely conclude that they repeatedly became bums immediately after each of these.

apparently this got killed by one person:

"Gellar says it was one person who killed the project. “We had an executive on our show who was not only not a fan of the original, but was proud to constantly remind us that he had never seen the entirety of the series and how it wasn't for him."
