Which of the four original KISS members would you be if given the chance?

You have four choices and only four. Substitutions are not allowed. History cannot be altered. The make-up cannot be changed. Explanations for your choice are required. Lack of knowledge regarding anything about KISS is not an acceptable excuse -- use the photo if you have to, if nothing else.

I'd have to vote Ace for:

1) being the Spaceman. Ziggy Stardust taken to the next logical level.

2) silver makeup! SILVER MAKEUP!

3) he sang "Shock Me" and it's a hard call whether I like the original better or the Red House Painters cover but both ways they're a great song

4) as evidenced by the above, a blue aura

5) designing the KISS logo -- all marketers ever wish they had that kind of instant recognition factor for their products.

they're a great song

I'm going to stare at this a while.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Sunday, 17 August 2003 00:48 (twenty-two years ago)

gene. for the israeli business ethic.

The Four Singing Beatles (Jody Beth Rosen), Sunday, 17 August 2003 00:49 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm with Ned - I want to be Ace with the cool makeup! I too have a blue glow (Jarvis Cocker to thread!)

Alexis (Alexis), Sunday, 17 August 2003 01:05 (twenty-two years ago)

For fuck's sake, Gene Simmons, of course, assuming all the rumors are true.

donut bitch (donut), Sunday, 17 August 2003 01:09 (twenty-two years ago)

I want to be Having Fun With Stanley on Stage! The other guys are cooler, but Paul can get away with saying absolutely anything ridiculous. As such, he's my hero.

J (Jay), Sunday, 17 August 2003 01:09 (twenty-two years ago)

even if it means i have to play a crappy villain in a crappy Tom Selleck movie (x post)

donut bitch (donut), Sunday, 17 August 2003 01:09 (twenty-two years ago)

paul, definitely paul. for the same reason that J stated!

Tad (llamasfur), Sunday, 17 August 2003 01:37 (twenty-two years ago)

Another for Paul. The guy exudes so much charisma, has such a knack for extemporaneous speech. Plus he's not afraid to act gay. He's a very confident man, and his confidence seems effortless, unlike Gene who is supremely neurotic.

Mr. Diamond (diamond), Sunday, 17 August 2003 02:02 (twenty-two years ago)

paul, because he appears to come closest to the functioning-grown-up/nice-man/happy-person ideal to which i aspire.

dan (dan), Sunday, 17 August 2003 02:36 (twenty-two years ago)

paul stanley because ive always thought i look a little bit like him anyway

minna (minna), Sunday, 17 August 2003 03:54 (twenty-two years ago)

and all that other confident/relaxed/happy/ridiculous stuff

minna (minna), Sunday, 17 August 2003 03:55 (twenty-two years ago)

don't forget nice!

dan (dan), Sunday, 17 August 2003 04:25 (twenty-two years ago)

paul also does one helluva foxy dance!

Tad (llamasfur), Sunday, 17 August 2003 04:30 (twenty-two years ago)

Hmmmm, I might want to be Gene, but I don't think I could handle the responsibility. So, I'll be Ace.

jel -- (jel), Sunday, 17 August 2003 07:39 (twenty-two years ago)

Listen to "Ozone", then take a wild fuckin' guess!

What? Paul's closer to a matronly Yiddish-babbling grandmother from Miami Beach than anything approaching "functioning".

Once again, the only acceptable answers are Gene or Ace, though after reading Gene's second book, he seems less and less the cool character that myself and a veritable nation of others, undoubtedly perceived him to be. Likewise, Gene's description, in his two books, of Ace's bizarre slide into uncooperatvie paranoia, irresponsibility and flat out ignorance make him a less savoury character as well.

Gene seems to deal exclusively in avaricious absolutes and appears to lack a wellspring of compassion in his arsenal of stunted emotions (all dwarfed by his tireless libido and all-consuming greed). Ace, meanwhile, seems to indeed be a visitor from another planet, albeit not an entirely advanced one. There was a tell-all book about seven or eight years ago that included scraps of paper featuring purported doodlings of Ace's, many of which featured swastikas (bolstering the theory that the S's in the Kiss logo were indeed derived from the Teutonic "SS" ---> and it is for this very reason that Kiss releases in Germany feature an altered logo (the S's are streamlined to look more like Z's than lightning bolts...see below). It's hard to fathom how Gene and Paul (both Jewish) let these sort've shenanignans slide.

I think Ace has the best picture + his hair comes closest to what mine was like when I was 16 so I'll pick him. And the blue aura. Deep inside I know I'm just not a Gene Simmons. But it might be OK to hang out with him.

sundar subramanian (sundar), Sunday, 17 August 2003 13:50 (twenty-two years ago)

So far Peter has gotten the short end of the stick in this thread.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Sunday, 17 August 2003 14:07 (twenty-two years ago)

And he had the coolest makeup! I thought the cat look would be sought after on ile.

Larcole (Nicole), Sunday, 17 August 2003 14:20 (twenty-two years ago)

oh it's Peter for me. What can I do?

lawrence kansas (lawrence kansas), Sunday, 17 August 2003 14:56 (twenty-two years ago)

And he had the coolest makeup!

Nah, I don't agree. Too busy (look at the first album cover, for chrissakes....it looks like he was just wingin' it, messed up, and then had to cover it up with lots of extraneous design work that he'd never be able to replicate on a nightly basis).

Coolest make-up? Toss up between Ace & Gene (once again).

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Sunday, 17 August 2003 15:34 (twenty-two years ago)

I love that cover, goddammit.....they were still all black'n'silver'n'leather'n'evil'n'not-at-all-kiddie-friendly.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Sunday, 17 August 2003 15:35 (twenty-two years ago)

gene is not a cool guy at all and ace comes off like a garden variety drug addict of the dumb and uninteresting variety. nice, happy, matronly paul is the only sane choice.

dan (dan), Sunday, 17 August 2003 16:38 (twenty-two years ago)

Dan's pretty accurate, it seems.....although I bet Paul has the odd skeleton in his closet/achiles heel.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Sunday, 17 August 2003 16:49 (twenty-two years ago)

eight months pass...
Are there any further voices to be heard here?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 19 April 2004 17:48 (twenty-two years ago)

My vote is for Paul, and that is SOLELY based on this fact:

I had a KISS comic book as a kid (which I have since lost), that was pretty much my only connection with the band, as I didn't listen to their music. Anyway, in the comic, each band member had a 'special power' to fight evil, or whatever. To this day the only special power that I can remember is Paul's: he shot this crazy power/disruption ray from his eye in a star shape that looked pretty fucking cool in comic form. All I wanted in life at that point was this all-powerful magic eye.

I can't believe this is the first time I've noticed the Kiss "SS" / Naz1 "SS" connection...

Rob Bolton (Rob Bolton), Monday, 19 April 2004 20:00 (twenty-two years ago)

And yes, I realise how shameful it is that I have lost this comic into the sands of time...

Rob Bolton (Rob Bolton), Monday, 19 April 2004 20:02 (twenty-two years ago)

I vote for Gene at the very least so I can say "you must embrace me with open legs" on NPR.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Monday, 19 April 2004 20:42 (twenty-two years ago)

All I wanted in life at that point was this all-powerful magic eye.

Dude, man, I have an all-powerful magic eye and lemme tell ya....it's no picnic. Now if I could breathe fire, THAT would be something to write home about.
