Me, I'm just filling in for a full-time ILE poster while she's away from the board on sanity leave.

I used to post here a fair bit, mainly as 'Kodanshi', but I rarely do now.

i was, i got told off for it. 'Jackie' - "do you know you're not allowed to use the internet during working hours?" Me - embarassing pause...."no". my supervisor then revealed she had also been busted by Jackie for looking up porn, i think she was just trying to be down with the kids.

I'm not even a temp anymore.

Oh shit. I just realised what this thread actually involved. Bugger...

hi.

oops (Oops), Saturday, 18 October 2003 23:37 (twenty-two years ago)

Hi oops. I guess that explains why at a certain time of night, you and me are about the only people on here.

adaml (adaml), Sunday, 19 October 2003 00:05 (twenty-two years ago)

What's your excuse? I blame the job market and my "specialized" skills. :)

adaml (adaml), Sunday, 19 October 2003 00:06 (twenty-two years ago)

Yes, the job market and a useless degree (psychology). I'm gonna take the GRE--gotta register by Nov. 6 I think--and then go to school somewhere out west, possibly San Francisco. That's where you are, right?
Oh BTW, I got a check from my temp agency yesterday for $47!!! Not bad for an hour of work. (was supposed to be a long-term position. sat around in my car waiting for the truck I was to unload to arrive for most of the morning. then they told us we could go and they wouldn't need us til 1:30. come back at 1PM, boss-guy is all pissed off, saying I should've been back at noon. "we won't be needing you...ever" !!! I was vindicated a couple weeks later when one of the other guys I was working with told my agency that he heard them say 1:30 too.)
That means I'm $47 less in debt. Woohoo! Plus, I worked a whopping 4 hours on Monday which will be another $35 or so.

Yeah, I'm sure SF makes up for schools what it lacks in EMPLOYMENT. Join us! Looks like I'll be trying for schools next year, too. What/where are you hoping to study?

adaml (adaml), Sunday, 19 October 2003 00:27 (twenty-two years ago)

Well, I have to get one of those books that list all the schools and what grad programs they offer, but as of the moment I'd like to study Human Factors Engineering. It's like ergonomics but with a wider scope and more psycholically-oriented. Ideally, I'd graduate and be a consultant for businesses and tell them to use brighter colors and put in more windows so their workers would be more productive. A bit like a feng shui guru I guess, except without the flakiness. In the outdated book I have, only two schools offer such a program for someone who only wants to go as far as a Master's degree. But I'm not dead set on this---if I see another course of study that seems do-able, at a good school in a good location, I'd have no problem changing my mind.
Do you already have a Bachelor's? What would you be studying?
(side note: My sister moved out to SF recently. For a few months, she had a hard time even finding temp jobs, but was recently hired as a media-buyer full-time by the same company she used to work for here in Chicago. Great pay, but they're working her like a dog and she already wants to quit)

Yes.
*coughs* ...errrr, MFA in film...talk about "employable".

Sounds like California is the right place for you if that's what you want to do. What I hear from my working friends is that wages out here are significantly higher, but you only have to read ILX to see how many people in this part of the country are having job problems...Oh, well. Here's to the predicted economic recovery of 2005!

adaml (adaml), Sunday, 19 October 2003 01:01 (twenty-two years ago)

2005 you say? Perfect! Just when I'd be getting out of school.
I've been out of school since 2000, so it's impossible for me to get any references from old TAs or profs (profs wouldn't remember me anyway, since the smallest class I was in was at least 70 people). How does that work? Would the admissions dept just waive the references requirement? Surely I can't be the only one in this situation.

oops (Oops), Sunday, 19 October 2003 01:06 (twenty-two years ago)

I graduated the same year as you, and I have the same problem. Have you tried just writing to them anyway? Maybe they'll just pretend to remember you. What about work references?

adaml (adaml), Sunday, 19 October 2003 01:08 (twenty-two years ago)

Haven't tried contacting them. There was only one TA I even interacted with and he's long gone. I only remember one of my profs' names, and only because she's semi-famous.
See, I wasn't sure if I could use work references. I've only worked through a temp agency, but have had a couple long-term assignments. Unfortuanately, one of them ended after, um, I failed a drug test when they wanted to hire me full-time. Still, the other long-term boss I had loved me and would be glad to help me out (we talked a bunch about me going back to grad school). And if it comes down to it, Luna says she's good at faking such things. Basically, I just have to get my ass in gear since admission deadlines are usually, what, in January sometime?

oops (Oops), Sunday, 19 October 2003 01:18 (twenty-two years ago)

February for me. I admit-I have a couple of fake references/e-mail addresses that I use. It's definitely helped.

I failed a drug test when they wanted to hire me full-time.

Why does this not surprise me? :)

adaml (adaml), Sunday, 19 October 2003 01:20 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah, that sucked. They said 'hey, wanna work here?' And then IMMEDIATELY sent me to the clinic. This girl told me she had something I culd take so I would pass it, and then said "haha! just kidding!". Pure evil. I drank a LOT of water, hoping I'd at least give a diluted sample and have to re-take it another day. Went in the cup and it was deep yellow. Peed again ten minutes later and it was crystal clear. I console myself with the fact that it wasn't that good of a job anyway. Surprisingly, my agency couldn't care less about it.

oops (Oops), Sunday, 19 October 2003 01:27 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm a temp! Woo! I work at the NHS, my entire department are temps.

And thank you very much, my Trust Fund officially gave out a year ago, I am no longer a Trusta. (Maybe I should hold an anniversary or something...)

I like being a temp for several reasons:

1) If you don't like it, you can LEAVE.
2) You're paid by the hour. I have a lot less problem staying late or coming early when I get paid for it.
3) Erm... did I mention I can LEAVE at any time?

kate (kate), Monday, 20 October 2003 07:12 (twenty-two years ago)

I was till recently. Also worked in the horrible NHS till recently. Now I'm on a three month contract. Security!

Enrique (Enrique), Monday, 20 October 2003 07:26 (twenty-two years ago)

The funny thing was, last week, my boss told me "You work too hard! You've got to remember to take a break or something every now and then!"

If only she knew...
