SCTV coming out on DVD this month?

I'd read that the creators of SCTV finally managed to work out all the issues involved in getting their original 90-minute NBC shows onto DVD in time for a Jan. 2004 release -- the main hold-up being licensing the various musical tracks, which entailed extra $$ going to the publishers/composers. But no estimated date is shown on Amazon.com, which I figured would be a good place to start.

Because I've only seen snippets of these 90-minute shows over the years on the 30-minute slice-up jobs that would air on Comedy Central or other networks, I am REALLY looking forward to getting these. I was also pleased to see that they're starting a few years into the show's run, when it moved to the 90-minute format on NBC around 1981/82, as some of the earlier Harold Ramis-era stuff just doesn't have the same glimmer to it.

Has anyone heard any news on these?

Okay, is this actually good? Because I imported the DVD of Mr. Show based on the same sort of "everyone loves it!" vibe, and now, everyone's got a smack coming.

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Wednesday, 7 January 2004 16:43 (twenty-two years ago)

Haha! Andrew I kiss you (I too am resolutely unconvinced of Mr. Show's virtues). What I remember of SCTV was extremely goofy and good but that memory could well be selective.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 7 January 2004 16:44 (twenty-two years ago)

Andrew, I guess it depends on your tastes, but at its peak, SCTV featured Rick Moranis, Catherine O'Hara, Eugene Levy, John Candy, Andrea Martin, Dave Thomas, Joe Flaherty, and later Martin Short. A great ensemble cast with, IMO, some of the funniest characters to ever grace the small screen. Johnny LaRue, Melvin B., Bobby Bitman, Edith Prickly, Earl Camembert, Bob & Doug McKenzie, Count Floyd ("would you like some.....PANCAKES?!?")...etc. etc. I have no idea how well this show has aged, but I have incredibly fond memories.

How good a guide to it is Strange Brew (which I've been meaning to see)? Or would that be like seeing the Blues Brothers and imagining you knew what was going on in SNL?

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Wednesday, 7 January 2004 17:09 (twenty-two years ago)

"Dr Tongue's 3D House of Stewardesses!"

Kingfishee (Kingfish), Wednesday, 7 January 2004 17:13 (twenty-two years ago)

I have a childhood memory of Martin Short sneezing and a cloud of white powder coming out of his nose courtesy of SCTV. This memory becomes more beautiful with every passing year. I'm looking forward to these releases.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Wednesday, 7 January 2004 17:21 (twenty-two years ago)

plus it's occurred to me that I really need some more old school John Candy.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Wednesday, 7 January 2004 17:22 (twenty-two years ago)

I tried to sit through Strange Brew a few years ago and found it somewhat unwatchable, so I don't think it's a good approximation of their "show" on SCTV. Mainly, they'd sit around and come up with the most half-assed ideas for shows, drink Molson, and belch. I think it lost a certain luster once their album came out and they had a hit record, sort of like the SNL curse.

Does anyone remember when CCCP took over the airwaves?

Pre-Teen World?

When the "cabbage leaf" body snatchers invaded?

When the mayor's nephew was "kidnapped"?

Tex & Edna?

Their takeoff on Oceans Eleven?

Good times...

Baked Bean Teeth (Baked Bean Teeth), Wednesday, 7 January 2004 17:25 (twenty-two years ago)

if that one skit where short plays the singer of that punk band, "the queen haters" (+ john candy on drums in a mohawk rulez my world), i must have it.

dyson (dyson), Wednesday, 7 January 2004 17:26 (twenty-two years ago)

Strange Brew is godly when ever the MacKenzie Bros are on the screen and extremely painful when it's just Max Von Sydow and Paul Dooley advancing the plot as if we give a shit.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Wednesday, 7 January 2004 17:27 (twenty-two years ago)

SCTV was fab, Andrew....according to the memories of my 10 year-old vampire self. Still, wait til a mate gets their copy. Use the saved cash to buy a case of Guinness, instead.

See? No smacking necessary.....

Nichole Graham (Nichole Graham), Wednesday, 7 January 2004 17:29 (twenty-two years ago)

That would be excellent. For a time, they were showing them after Conan, and I taped some, but I accidentally taped over a few. It was the same tape that had Triumph the Insult Comic Dog at the Westminster Dog Show. :(

Haha! Donut Bitch just absolutely loves that sketch.

"GOD SAVE THE QUEEN...and her FASCIST -- REGIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIME!"

I have fond memories of Hall and Oates performing on the show, then the two of them starring in a bizarre Chariots of Fire parody.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 7 January 2004 17:55 (twenty-two years ago)

weren't they called "the bloody queen haters" (and their song, "i hate the bloody queen")?

Eisbär (llamasfur), Wednesday, 7 January 2004 18:09 (twenty-two years ago)

she put taxes on me DOOOOOOOOPE

Eisbär (llamasfur), Wednesday, 7 January 2004 18:11 (twenty-two years ago)

"Chariots of Eggs," Ned.

Speaking of musicians, they also had a show called Gil Fisher's Fishin' Musician, which had the Tubes and Plasmatics as guests, among others. "Tubes! Whoo!"

Baked Bean Teeth (Baked Bean Teeth), Wednesday, 7 January 2004 18:22 (twenty-two years ago)

Wasn't there an episode where they were taken over by Soviets or something?

Kerry (dymaxia), Wednesday, 7 January 2004 19:11 (twenty-two years ago)

Ha! yes! . Here it is. One of my favorites was the show "What fits into Russia?"

Kerry (dymaxia), Wednesday, 7 January 2004 19:14 (twenty-two years ago)

So they're skipping the earlier 30 minute episodes from prior to the 90 minute ones?

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Wednesday, 7 January 2004 23:20 (twenty-two years ago)

I wish SCTV was still as funny as when I was eight years old.

may pang (maypang), Wednesday, 7 January 2004 23:26 (twenty-two years ago)

Its pretty funny at 8:30 in the morning or whenever it used to be on the comedy channel, but there were some boring moments. The Days of the Week skits were pretty boring. Though the bit were Bob and Doug got kicked off air was great.

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Wednesday, 7 January 2004 23:41 (twenty-two years ago)

I remember Mojo from The Days of the Week making me cry with laughter. For an eight year old, she hit all the right notes.

may pang (maypang), Wednesday, 7 January 2004 23:48 (twenty-two years ago)

I'd settle for a DVD of all Bob & Doug skits and maybe some of the commercials like Roscoe's Shower in a Briefcase.

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Wednesday, 7 January 2004 23:51 (twenty-two years ago)

god I love this show, it's a huge inspiration, this makes me VERY excited

Baked Bean Teeth (Baked Bean Teeth), Thursday, 17 June 2004 00:41 (twenty-one years ago)

I got my copy today. Excitement! I've watched the first two episodes, trying not to OD on all the goodness at once. The weaker first episode, cobbled together from bits from earlier seasons, shows what a good decision it was to start with the Network/90 season.

Rock Hardy (Rock Hardy), Thursday, 17 June 2004 00:53 (twenty-one years ago)

It is the good stuffz, oh yes.

Right here! Mr. Bobby Bitman, ladies and gentleman!

Volume 2 is coming out next month?! This is the set with the 'CCCP' takeover of the station. But good lord, is it expensive. It goes for 90 bucks, but Amazon is currently offering it for $62.99 (I'm assuming this is some sort of pre-order special?) I don't know if I should order it now, or wait.

Kerry (dymaxia), Tuesday, 21 September 2004 17:51 (twenty-one years ago)

four weeks pass...
My volume two arrived today!!! I'm so excited to go home and watch them.

k3rry (dymaxia), Wednesday, 20 October 2004 17:17 (twenty-one years ago)

two years pass...

I bought Vol 2 in SF Amoeba, am slowly starting to sift... That "CCCP1" show is a dilly. and Candy in anything.

Dr Morbius, Thursday, 21 June 2007 16:31 (eighteen years ago)

Bought the first 3 volumes for $10 each at Dollar General last month.

Chris L, Thursday, 21 June 2007 17:01 (eighteen years ago)

daaammmmn!

SCTV should also be credited with remaking Ocean's 11 as Maudlin's 11 twenty years before it became a hyperinflated cash cow for Clooney & Soderbergh.
