The presenter branded Arabs "suicide bombers, limb amputators, women repressors" and asked what they had given to the world other than oil.

Kilroy to become real-life Alan Partridge?

I am amazed that the paper published it in the first place. Perhaps the editor had a grudge against RKS.

Yes, but this is the Daily Express, normal rules don't apply.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Friday, 9 January 2004 16:01 (twenty-two years ago)

Someone forwarded me the full article at work and the first six paragraphs (until he mentions asylum seekers and George Galloway) just read like a cut'n'paste from any mass-circulated US right-wing tract of the last two years. Maybe he's a plagiarist as well as a xenophobic headcase?

Michael Jones (MichaelJ), Friday, 9 January 2004 16:17 (twenty-two years ago)

according to today's guardian (can't be arsed to do a link from this slow computer) the express printed the article 9 months ago, and seem to have reprinted it by error. why did no-one make a fuss then?!

But the Sunday Express has reacted furiously to the BBC's decision. It accused the BBC of "grossly over-reacting" and called on the corporation to reinstate the presenter immediately.

"The article was not a racist article and it was a rewrite of a previous article that appeared in April without complaint. The Sunday Express rewrote it during the Christmas period, but there was not one complaint before," said a spokesman.

"It was legalled by lawyers and there is absolutely no case to offer. The Sunday Express believes that the BBC is gagging free speech and is absolutely appalled."

why the hell are they re-writing old articles, is this because RKS is too tired and emotional/barking mad/insert other reason here to write new ones himself?

CarsmileSteve (CarsmileSteve), Friday, 9 January 2004 16:47 (twenty-two years ago)

this is great on the BBC news "have your say" section...

Once again an individual who states his opinion is jumped upon by the Politically correct brigade. We are now only allowed to express opinions in this country if it is the opinion of the view rather than the many. When will the BBC and the government finally sit up and listen to the average man and woman in this country, otherwise their will be segregation and a lack of education. Let's put some common sense thinking back in the UK. Well done Kilroy for expressing your views.

Neil Armstrong, Newcastle-upon-Tyne

"otherwise their will be segregation and a lack of education." sums it all up.

ken c (ken c), Monday, 12 January 2004 14:23 (twenty-two years ago)

eurgh, even if Kilroy is not racist towards Arabs you can't deny that the article (and he hasn't complained about it being twisted by the Express) is highly flammatory and was just a very stupid thing to do esp. when you're not an expert political commentator (they would know better anyway perhaps). not sure if this means the BBC can be justified for taking his show off the air but it's hard to not be biased in that respect. these people saying he's been treated harshly just for expressing his opinion may not be so forgiving if someone else had written an article saying paedophilia or Satanism or use of hard drugs was okay or something else equally taboo (but they would only be expressing an opinion no?) - where is the line drawn indeed?

stevem (blueski), Monday, 12 January 2004 14:38 (twenty-two years ago)

I think the BBC is between a rock and a hard place. On the one hand it seems a little harsh to take someone off the air for having an opinion (albeit an ill-argued and biased one), on the other hand, if they kept the program on they'd be seen to be condoning the views.

Remember angus deayton? he was sacked for what goes on in his private life. At the end of the day a TV company has to do what they think would keep the most viewers. and it's not always going to seem "fair".

ken c (ken c), Monday, 12 January 2004 14:53 (twenty-two years ago)

The BBC has a right to employ the people they want, his views could and maybe should be put across on the BBC as part of balanced debate, they do not however have to employ someone with so obvious a racist veiwpoint whether they work in the canteen or are a presenter on a TV show.

Jarlr'mai (jarlrmai), Monday, 12 January 2004 15:00 (twenty-two years ago)

Right to employ the people you want != right to stop employing someone you previously employed for no reason. Of course I am sure Kilroy has all sorts of nonsense in his contract saying that he can be fired for such things so it is okay. But still...

Pete (Pete), Monday, 12 January 2004 15:26 (twenty-two years ago)

it could be argued that just as Angus Deayton's position as host of a topical news quiz became unteneble after his tabloid 'shame' likewise it would now be harder for Kilroy to maintain his status after exposing some difficult opinions.

stevem (blueski), Monday, 12 January 2004 15:39 (twenty-two years ago)

perhaps he will plea bargain by hosting a special inviting some Arab guys into the studio to demonstrate what lovely people they are - i can see it now "well i think we all learned something today, i know i did...yep, my job is safe"

Interesting to see that a Jewish organisation is now lobbying for Tom Paulin to get sacked for allegedly referring to pro-Zionist American Jews in Israel as "Nazis", or something along those lines. Is it double standards not to sack Paulin as well - or are his remarks unproveable?

Matt DC (Matt DC), Monday, 12 January 2004 17:41 (twenty-two years ago)

It is Tom paulin's job to have opinions though. It is Kilroy's job to moderate a fair and open discussion. (Yes, I know that sounds a bit funny).

Pete (Pete), Monday, 12 January 2004 17:57 (twenty-two years ago)

But that's Kilroy's job on the BBC. His other job as a columnist for the Express is surely to have opinions?

ailsa (ailsa), Monday, 12 January 2004 18:00 (twenty-two years ago)

Nobody shld have two jobs, it's just greedy

Andrew L (Andrew L), Monday, 12 January 2004 18:02 (twenty-two years ago)

but the Deayton Rule applies no? do not compromise your position by getting caught indulging in unsavoury practices whether that be having cocaine infidel sex with Alicia Duvall or making nasty misguided generalisations about an entire race of people during an extremely sensitive political climate.

stevem (blueski), Monday, 12 January 2004 18:05 (twenty-two years ago)

Certainly, but I don't think it applies to Paulin (worse luck). I assume that Kilroy has not lost his job with the express after all.

Ah the reviews

I have just finished reading this book by Robert Kilroy-Silk who was one of my most favourite presenters whilst on TV. I haven't heard much about him over the past few years and was excited and curious to know what type of novel he could have possibly written.

It looks like this has been his first book on the Kindle and I only hope that he can give us some more from where this has come from. I loved it. A very awkward subject to tackle, Kilroy has written a blinder and according to the cover, is based on a true story, which makes it even more compelling.

I knew he wouldn't let me down.

There’s beef!

IN October 1985, The Oxford Mail reported on a pair of seemingly innocuous backbench Labour MPs having a 'scuffle' in Parliament.

'Astonished' colleagues watched on as one grabbed the other 'by the lapel' in a face-to-face row.

The whole incident was probably overblown - one, Robert Kilroy-Silk, merely became a chat show host and the other is, well, favourite to be Britain's next prime minister.

The row broke out when Mr Kilroy-Silk challenged Mr Corbyn 'over remarks he made during a weekend television programme', according to the now Labour leader.

"MPs looked on as the two appeared to be near to blows - although none was struck," the Mail added.

Mr Corbyn said the pair came face-to-face while voting against a contentious transport bill.

He explained: "Mr Kilroy-Silk came up to me and said he wanted a word. He grabbed me by the lapel. I thought he was overwrought and overexcited."

Mr Kilroy-Silk did not comment.

gyac, Wednesday, 13 November 2019 18:43 (six years ago)

having a little peruse of kilroy's work as a times columnist in the late 80s and he was already fully formed back then. hates ted heath and the eu, compares the emerging eu to the crumbling soviet block, literally has a column with the headline "Dark days, when white cannot be beautiful", and has this to say about Lady Osamor (who was rejected by the NEC from the shortlist of the vauxhall clp candidacy despite being nominated by numerous branches and affiliates, the place later going to kate fucking hoey):

If proof were needed of her ``unsuitability'', or that she is out of touch with most Labour voters, it was provided the Saturday before last when I interviewed her for Radio 4's Behind the Headlines. Martha did not know that the Cup Final was to be played that very day, still less who was playing.

That was strange, to say the least, given the media attention it had received after the Hillsborough tragedy. More to the point, it is extraordinary that someone who aspires to be a Labour MP, to represent working people, should demonstrate such an ignorance of their national game. Whatever else she may be, she cannot claim to be a woman of ``the people''. Not of those who live in Liverpool, Birmingham, Preston, Huddersfield or Leeds, she can't.
