JESS HARVELL, ANAIRN, AND ROCKISTSCIENTIST TO THREAD IMMEDIATELY!

Eisbär (llamasfur), Friday, 9 January 2004 15:45 (twenty-two years ago)

UNHOLY FUCKING DUD ABOMBINATION OF ALL THAT IS GOOD AND TRUE IN THIS WORLD

(this doesn't stop me from having a slight affection for them, mind you)

fiddo centington (dubplatestyle), Friday, 9 January 2004 15:47 (twenty-two years ago)

sorry, i'm like geir and music when it comes steaks: THE RIGHT WAY OR THE HIGHWAY

fiddo centington (dubplatestyle), Friday, 9 January 2004 15:48 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm getting gout just from reading ILX.

lawrence kansas (lawrence kansas), Friday, 9 January 2004 15:50 (twenty-two years ago)

on a related topic: has anyone else noticed that they're now selling cheese steaks at MCDONALD'S?!?

Eisbär (llamasfur), Friday, 9 January 2004 15:54 (twenty-two years ago)

I betcha Mayor McCheese had his hand in that.

lawrence kansas (lawrence kansas), Friday, 9 January 2004 15:55 (twenty-two years ago)

or his steak-um.

Chris V (Chris V), Friday, 9 January 2004 15:56 (twenty-two years ago)

i seriously thought about firebombing local mcdonalds when i first came home.

fiddo centington (dubplatestyle), Friday, 9 January 2004 16:03 (twenty-two years ago)

Mayor McCheesesteak

Chris V (Chris V), Friday, 9 January 2004 16:06 (twenty-two years ago)

but see the problem isn't the fact that mcdonalds SELLS cheesesteaks, it's that people HERE will BUY THEM FROM MCDONALDS

fiddo centington (dubplatestyle), Friday, 9 January 2004 16:07 (twenty-two years ago)

What's a cheesesteak?

Matt DC (Matt DC), Friday, 9 January 2004 16:08 (twenty-two years ago)

same here. but the cheesesteaks in massachusetts are nothing but fatty disgusting things anyways.

Chris V (Chris V), Friday, 9 January 2004 16:08 (twenty-two years ago)

Steak, with cheese on top.

I had one once. It made me vom in the nearest Starbucks. Where oddly, the inside was playing jazz and was lovely and fragranced, but the toilet in which I puked was a HOLE IN THE GROUND.

Sarah (starry), Friday, 9 January 2004 16:09 (twenty-two years ago)

like, i can understand if people in sri lanka or idaho bought mcdonalds cheesesteaks, but JESUS CHRIST PEOPLE THERE'S A PIZZA PLACE EVERY THREE BLOCKS

fiddo centington (dubplatestyle), Friday, 9 January 2004 16:09 (twenty-two years ago)

the Inquirer reviews the McDonald's cheese steak.

Eisbär (llamasfur), Friday, 9 January 2004 16:16 (twenty-two years ago)

I used to love Steak-Ums until I read the ingredients and the nutrition facts.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Friday, 9 January 2004 18:45 (twenty-two years ago)

If I eat one, I will die. It's just that simple.

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Friday, 9 January 2004 18:48 (twenty-two years ago)

I understand Steak, but what's the Um ?

Sean (Sean), Friday, 9 January 2004 18:56 (twenty-two years ago)

I think you actually understand it exactly Sean.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Friday, 9 January 2004 18:57 (twenty-two years ago)

Whats funny is i havent had a Steak-Um in about 2 years...but i went on a steak-um frenzy lately to break the spell. Ive had a cheesesteak 3 of the last 5 nights for dinner. Only spaced by Tombstone pizza. Speaking of which, the Nacho Tombstone pizza is actually pretty good...it has a 'corn tortilla' crust.

El Spinktor (El Spinktor), Friday, 9 January 2004 19:15 (twenty-two years ago)

yeah that crust is the bomb

lawrence kansas (lawrence kansas), Friday, 9 January 2004 19:16 (twenty-two years ago)

i've never had a steak-um. my mom was ruthless about not letting junk food into the house, and none of my friends' parents ever had it. i don't regret this lapse in my snacking background.

lauren (laurenp), Friday, 9 January 2004 19:52 (twenty-two years ago)

holy shit, googling for "steakums" just now somehow landed me on a gay p0rn site whoa!

nickalicious (nickalicious), Friday, 9 January 2004 20:32 (twenty-two years ago)

Eisbär (llamasfur), Friday, 9 January 2004 21:29 (twenty-two years ago)

what are the red sox? mine are brown

kephm, Friday, 9 January 2004 22:00 (twenty-two years ago)

kephm, your in Boston though right? Steak and cheese in Boston is different than the ones in Worcester. Worcester pizza places are greek pizza places. have you ever been to Moogys in Brighton? the steak and cheeses there are unreal.

Chris V (Chris V), Saturday, 10 January 2004 15:15 (twenty-two years ago)

boston & good cheese-steak = DOES NOT COMPUTE

Eisbär (llamasfur), Thursday, 15 January 2004 02:42 (twenty-two years ago)

god, i love crappy american food. if i could buy pizza pockets, tombstone pizzas, bubblegum ice cream, and oreo ice cream sandwiches i'd be the size of a house...

stevie (stevie), Thursday, 15 January 2004 11:36 (twenty-two years ago)

I broke down and bought some on Sunday. They are not quite as good as they used to be. Tasted like a meat papertowel.

Chris V (Chris V), Thursday, 15 January 2004 12:06 (twenty-two years ago)

Tasted like a meat papertowel.

told ya so!

Eisbär (llamasfur), Thursday, 15 January 2004 21:19 (twenty-two years ago)

eight months pass...
these still burn me up

jess (dubplatestyle), Tuesday, 21 September 2004 20:16 (twenty-one years ago)

Lots of times my mom would have me make steak-ums for myself when she was out, and I kind of enjoyed it at the time. That probably would have been when I was in high school though, and I partly enjoyed feeling semi-independent. I haven't knowingly eaten them for years, so I don't remember what they taste like.

(I was 99% vegan for a long time, so I always feel a bit funny participating in threads like these.)

well, eating a steak-um isn't EXACTLY like eating REAL MEAT, ya know. so yer still safe.

Eisbär (llamasfur), Wednesday, 22 September 2004 03:17 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm idly curious as to what the 1% not-vegan part of your diet was.

rainy (rainy), Wednesday, 22 September 2004 04:40 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm betting it was marshmallows

"um" is what you say right before you vomit

This is still one of the funniest exchanges ever written on ILE.

i've been back in the city proper for nine months now and i've yet to have a cheesesteak.

Many, I loved these as a kid. Wouldn't touch one now. But definitely have fond memories of frying these pink to brown in under 60 seconds, slathering them with Worcestershire sauce, and slapping them on sourdough bread. Mmmm.

Nate Carson, Sunday, 17 February 2013 22:10 (thirteen years ago)

The first time I ate one - at a friends house, cooked by some parental figure in the 1980s, it was like the best thing I ever ate.
Bought 4 or 4 times since then, tried to replicate, no dice.

I've got no ideological problem with this kind of food, though none of it is as good as it used to be. I mean, I check in in vain on White Castle about twice a year. So "thanks" for reminding me. I'll probably buy a box of Steakums this week.

Mke Dixon, BFA (Mike Dixn), Sunday, 17 February 2013 22:44 (thirteen years ago)

nostalgia for terrible food is one of the funniest things about adulthood. I used to go to fucking town on some 7-11 nachos. Out on the road a few years ago, I decided to take a trip down memory lane. Do not, as an adult, take a trip down memory lane to 7-11 for the nachos, in case you were wondering. You cannot go home again.

It's so true. I do still have dreams about the donuts the old lady cooks at my high school made every morning. I truly believe those were actually good. But those ladies are long dead and there's no going back.

Nate Carson, Sunday, 17 February 2013 23:06 (thirteen years ago)

i have discovered that there are cheese steak joints in northern NJ and NYC which are as good as their counterparts in southern NJ or philadelphia. though folks should be aware that what some places in northern NJ call a "cheese steak" is pretty radically different than what Philly people would expect. an example (from Piccolo's, in Hoboken):

http://hobokenmagazine.com/wp-content/uploads/piccolos-cheesesteaks-hoboken-1024x577.jpg

the places up here that make philly-style cheesesteaks usually say so upfront. and the northern NJ cheese steak can be tasty, too -- it's just different.

I have no idea why I thought this was a good thread to read while hungover. I actually just threw up.
