By way of explanation:

WARSAW (Reuters) - Three Polish divers face a police probe for possible illegal fishing and abuse of animals after a newspaper photo showed them plying a freshly caught pike with champagne at an outdoor New Year's party.

"They may have committed offences of poaching and maltreating a fish," said Maria Niedziolka of the National Fishing Authority, which notified police about the incident.

One of the frogmen, seeing in the New Year by diving in a lake near the city of Opole, told news agency PAP that they had found the pike half-dead and wanted to "restore it to consciousness by treating it with champagne".

nickalicious (nickalicious), Friday, 9 January 2004 19:44 (twenty-two years ago)

"DRINK it!"

Kingfishee (Kingfish), Friday, 9 January 2004 19:45 (twenty-two years ago)

Somebody needs to embed an mp3 of Kenny Loggins' "Hero" on a link to the exploding bear pic. I could die happy with that window open.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Friday, 9 January 2004 20:02 (twenty-two years ago)

*a google search later*

How have I lived this long in life wrongly thinking that was a Kenny Loggins song? Or a song sung by a man for that matter?

Fuck all that - the bear fire is tops.

dean! (deangulberry), Friday, 9 January 2004 21:04 (twenty-two years ago)

Every time I look at it I imagine it as some scene extracted directly from some bear-centric 70s cop/action film. Like on the ground there's a polar bear named Silas screaming "Griz, NOOOOOO!" while fast paced Shaft-like wahwah guitar music kicks up the tension.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Friday, 9 January 2004 21:07 (twenty-two years ago)

The captions are priceless. "Furry risky," "paw judgment," "roar terror" -- my punster is delighted!

Leee Majors (Leee), Friday, 9 January 2004 21:57 (twenty-two years ago)

i bet that bear will never ever never touch a power transformer ever again.. assuming it lives.

bill stevens (bscrubbins), Friday, 9 January 2004 21:58 (twenty-two years ago)

It's a really terrifying and awful picture, but it is a great photographic moment captured nevertheless.

donut bitch (donut), Friday, 9 January 2004 21:59 (twenty-two years ago)

"A grizzly end", haha

I guess he didn't learn the lesson from that story about Winnie the Pooh, the honey, and the bees.

NA (Nick A.), Friday, 9 January 2004 22:44 (twenty-two years ago)

The fact that the bear FUCKING SURVIVED is the best bit. It's like the Mick Foley of bears or something.

nate detritus (natedetritus), Saturday, 10 January 2004 00:04 (twenty-two years ago)

Well, it would be a horribly tragic picture if it didn't survive, sheesh!

Eisbar, that was brilliantly unintentional.

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Saturday, 10 January 2004 02:05 (twenty-two years ago)

This vaguely reminds me of the time that the bum was jumping off that warehouse in SF, except this is more funny.

dean! (deangulberry), Saturday, 10 January 2004 02:58 (twenty-two years ago)

and this one has less coffee.

Kingfishee (Kingfish), Saturday, 10 January 2004 03:12 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah, the bear survived but is probably in great pain and crippled for life. Not exactly a happy ending, but it could have been worse I guess. Well, come to think of it, unless the bear just shrugged this off, death may have been a better ending. :(

donut bitch (donut), Saturday, 10 January 2004 04:02 (twenty-two years ago)

Bears. Can't do nothin' right.

is that a zombie?

Orbit (Orbit), Saturday, 10 January 2004 04:51 (twenty-two years ago)

I see the Mick Foley bear has inspired other bears to attempt to reenact his feats in the backyards of America, on trampolines. It is only a matter of time before bears start hitting each other with flourescent light tubes.
