WASHINGTON (AFP) - Two of President George W. Bush (news - web sites)'s military advisors said that the US inability to find illegal weapons in Iraq (news - web sites) means little.

"I don't think that you can draw any conclusion from the fact that the stockpiles were not found," Pentagon (news - web sites) advisor Richard Perle said at the American Enterprise Institute.

Perle said he did not fear that the United States would lose credibility after Bush used Iraq's supposed weapons of mass destruction as his principal justification for going to war.

"If others are going to take the view that, because these weapons weren't found, nothing that the United States says can be trusted -- there's not much we can do about that," he said. "It would be a foolish conclusion to draw."

Dear Bush Administration,

Please all shut up.

Leee Majors (Leee), Saturday, 10 January 2004 00:21 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm weary, so weary, of the supporters of this administration and their ability to point to any and every bit of news about the war -- most of which seems to contradict the predictions made before the war as well as the ostensible basis for being in such a big fucking hurry to invade -- and somehow spin it to fit their agenda.

Baked Bean Teeth (Baked Bean Teeth), Saturday, 10 January 2004 01:40 (twenty-two years ago)

there's not much we can do about that

But see, I like this because it IS true (since they can't unsay what was said etc.)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Saturday, 10 January 2004 01:56 (twenty-two years ago)

... and theyre not gonna start telling the truth anytime soon

bill stevens (bscrubbins), Saturday, 10 January 2004 02:13 (twenty-two years ago)

it's still an extremely dumb thing to say even if it is true - 'people don't believe us? ah whaddya gonna do' effectively

stevem (blueski), Saturday, 10 January 2004 02:23 (twenty-two years ago)

'tis true, ned.
the part about it being "a foolish conclusion" 'tis not.

dyson (dyson), Saturday, 10 January 2004 03:20 (twenty-two years ago)

saying nothing that the United States says can be trusted is a foolish conclusion to draw.

A Nairn (moretap), Saturday, 10 January 2004 03:26 (twenty-two years ago)

not trusting someone who says nothing that the United States says can be trusted is a foolish conclusion to draw.

dyson (dyson), Saturday, 10 January 2004 03:59 (twenty-two years ago)

no, I mean yes.

A Nairn (moretap), Saturday, 10 January 2004 04:05 (twenty-two years ago)

exactly.

dyson (dyson), Saturday, 10 January 2004 08:04 (twenty-two years ago)

four months pass...
WMD FOUND!

We went to Iraq for one fucking unexploded sarin shell? WTF?????

J (Jay), Monday, 17 May 2004 14:28 (twenty-two years ago)

MY FACE IS RED NOW

Gear! (Gear!), Monday, 17 May 2004 15:43 (twenty-two years ago)

Maybe they'll find two!

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 17 May 2004 15:50 (twenty-two years ago)

it's like when they send 300 rozzers down to storm a club and find just one unlit spliff

stevem (blueski), Monday, 17 May 2004 15:52 (twenty-two years ago)

And mere days after this, no less!!\

They left off the last sentence, which was "The shell had originated in the U.S. and had been sold to Iraq in 1984."

dave225 (Dave225), Monday, 17 May 2004 16:00 (twenty-two years ago)

They are going to find hundreds of shells containing nerve gas, which shouldn't surprise anyone. Not that it will ever matter.

I'm seriously considering going on CNN-free holiday. Because I tend yo have destructive emotions when I watch: images of torture, George W leading the US (image of torture), the relentless rhetorical banter of close-minded partisans who are relatively articulate but say nothing at the same time (so what you are saying Mr. Rumsfeld is that you are accountable but not accountable but accountable at the same time). The economy is doing well but not doing well; we are winning the war but the war was over a long time ago -- FUCK OFF! Let's hear some news about another godamn country your lies and problems and total lack of compassion is pissing me off. MAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHH!

Mike Guy (Miss Lonelyhearts), Monday, 17 May 2004 16:13 (twenty-two years ago)

The US Viceroy in Iraq Paul Bremer is reportedly drinking Saddam’s $2000 a bottle Napoleon-era brandy, smoking his expensive Davidoff cigars and he has even furnished his office with Saddam’s Napoleon-era furniture.

So long as he hasn't kept the art up.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 17 May 2004 16:14 (twenty-two years ago)

I just spent lunch with two young female coworkers who like Bush over Kerry because Kerry is "creepy-looking" and had no idea why Colin Powell would likely get shot if he ran for President. They also like Mitt Romney because "he's cute".

VengaDan Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 17 May 2004 16:15 (twenty-two years ago)

You are an extremely patient man.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 17 May 2004 16:17 (twenty-two years ago)

Have you heard Al Franken's Yogi Berra Analogy about likeability?

dave225 (Dave225), Monday, 17 May 2004 16:18 (twenty-two years ago)

I just spent lunch with two young female coworkers who like Bush over Kerry because Kerry is "creepy-looking"

I know we're not supposed to take this kinda stuff seriously and all lest we be seen as capitulating to the barbarians an' all, but the rush to nominate Kerry puzzled me for exactly this reason. You really can't overstate the value of a guy's FACE. Edwards had a face that people might've elected. Kerry's slimline-Frankenstein look makes it an uphill battle all the way. Since the differences between Edwards and Kerry were itty-bitty, they shoulda gone with the looker.

J0hn Darn1elle (J0hn Darn1elle), Monday, 17 May 2004 16:51 (twenty-two years ago)

J0hn, he's ELECTABLE. or possibly electible.

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Monday, 17 May 2004 16:52 (twenty-two years ago)

Erectable (if you like Frankenstein).

VengaDan Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 17 May 2004 16:53 (twenty-two years ago)

Edwards was plenty electable - the "only Kerry is electable" bit was all spin I think

J0hn Darn1elle (J0hn Darn1elle), Monday, 17 May 2004 17:04 (twenty-two years ago)

Right, any unconventional weapons found now in Iraq were indisputably there before the war. I mean, it's not llike we've openly tolerated porous borders, allowing the entry of hundreds of foreign fighters, or failed to do much of anything to hamper widespread activities by an Al Qaeda-linked group previously confined to a remote border area.

gabbneb (gabbneb), Monday, 17 May 2004 17:08 (twenty-two years ago)

I should note that coalition PR is not in fact claiming it as a smoking gun for WMD caches, in fact they're specifically saying it isn't.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 17 May 2004 17:11 (twenty-two years ago)

That isn't stopping everyone in my office from going "SEE THE WAR IS JUSTIFIED!!!!"

VengaDan Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 17 May 2004 17:14 (twenty-two years ago)

Dan, your workplace is sounding worse by the minute.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 17 May 2004 17:15 (twenty-two years ago)

(To be fair, "everyone" = one person.)

VengaDan Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 17 May 2004 17:16 (twenty-two years ago)

Much better.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 17 May 2004 17:17 (twenty-two years ago)

Right, any unconventional weapons found now in Iraq were indisputably there before the war.

No, but we should assume the likelyhood is high.

don carville weiner, Monday, 17 May 2004 17:21 (twenty-two years ago)

Are you quoting Colin Powell circa Feb '03 there?

Gear! (Gear!), Monday, 17 May 2004 17:25 (twenty-two years ago)

.. yeah, obsolete weapons from the 80's ..

"Kimmitt said the round, designed to mix the sarin in flight, belonged to a class of ordnance that the ousted government of Saddam Hussein claimed to have destroyed before the 1991 Gulf war. "

xp
