This is the thread where we recommend DVDs that are 'essential' for whatever reason, be it that the film is great/classic, it looks wonderful, it sounds amazing, has amazing extras or whatever, so that all the weird people who hate films but still buy loads of DVDs as if they were fucking ornaments can go out and purchase the lot of them.

Nick Southall (Nick Southall), Sunday, 11 January 2004 19:59 (twenty-two years ago)

@d@m to thread, obv.

Nick Southall (Nick Southall), Sunday, 11 January 2004 20:02 (twenty-two years ago)

An alternative title for this thread might be "Convince Nick to buy Toy Story / Les Enfants Du Paradis / Batman / Badlands / La Jetée."

Nick Southall (Nick Southall), Sunday, 11 January 2004 20:04 (twenty-two years ago)

i just got my copy of once upon a time in the west yesterday!!!! Yahoooooo! i haven't watched it yet, but i can't wait. that was on my "top ten to get" when i got a dvd player. it's so nice of them to release it for me.Anchor Bay's Suspiria set is still my fave of the stuff i have bought. Thin Red Line & Days of Heaven are wonderful as well. i haven't bought Badlands yet.just went in to a newbury comics in newton mass and even there i just start drooling like a fool when i see all the goodies i don't have. i don't even look at cd's anymore.

scott seward (scott seward), Sunday, 11 January 2004 20:05 (twenty-two years ago)

I watched Days Of Heaven just t'other night. Was wonderful.

Nick Southall (Nick Southall), Sunday, 11 January 2004 20:07 (twenty-two years ago)

if i were rich i would buy the entire criterion collection. ALL OF THEM. i rented some bergman thing, can't even remember the title, and it looked so beautiful i coulda cried. when i think of those 20 year old vhs copies i used to rent for years. WAAAH! I wuz robbed as a budding art snob! kids today don't know how far we had to trudge for our Fassinder with their netflix and their t3 connections.

scott seward (scott seward), Sunday, 11 January 2004 20:09 (twenty-two years ago)

"Me and my brother, it used to be just me and my brother"...cue Leo kottke.

scott seward (scott seward), Sunday, 11 January 2004 20:09 (twenty-two years ago)

Here are some I couldn't live without:

8 1/2 (Criterion)
Contempt
Sanford & Son Seasons 1-3
Fellowship/Two Towers Extended Editions
Rockers
By Brakhage

Jay Vee (Manon_70), Sunday, 11 January 2004 20:37 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm totally gonna buy this.

Broheems (diamond), Sunday, 11 January 2004 20:58 (twenty-two years ago)

the extra scene on the Heavy Metal DVD is one of the best parts of the movie.

A Nairn (moretap), Sunday, 11 January 2004 21:39 (twenty-two years ago)

As right now I'm enjoying the hell out of the Pet Shop Boys' PopArt, that. The first DVD I bought when I got a player was Blade Runner and that's always a good place to start.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Sunday, 11 January 2004 21:41 (twenty-two years ago)

I was never keen on Blade Runner. Dunno why, cos by all means I should be.

Nick Southall (Nick Southall), Sunday, 11 January 2004 21:43 (twenty-two years ago)

because you are a replicant

s1ocki (slutsky), Sunday, 11 January 2004 21:46 (twenty-two years ago)

Don't tell everyone.

Nick Southall (Nick Southall), Sunday, 11 January 2004 21:46 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm not keen on Jurassic Park for a similar reason.

Nick Southall (Nick Southall), Sunday, 11 January 2004 21:50 (twenty-two years ago)

The Conversation is a terrific film and has a really interesting commentary by Francis Coppola.

Andrew (enneff), Sunday, 11 January 2004 21:58 (twenty-two years ago)

Let me second that -- Haskell Wexler's second commentary is also enjoyable.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Sunday, 11 January 2004 22:04 (twenty-two years ago)

The The Is Spinal Tap dvd with commentary-in-hindsight by Nigel, Derek & David is almost like an entirely new film.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Sunday, 11 January 2004 22:21 (twenty-two years ago)

The new Devo dvd with commentary (appendex from their 1992 videodisc) is ESSENTIAL if you're a fan of Dev-O

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Sunday, 11 January 2004 22:21 (twenty-two years ago)

Always the Criterion edition if possible. My essentials are films that bear repeated viewing, where you find new suff each time OR becuase they are visually striking.

-Casablanca
-Seventh Seal
-Apocalypse Now (French sound a must)
-Tron
-original Fantasia
-Jesus Christ Superstar

Nick Southall (Nick Southall), Sunday, 11 January 2004 23:16 (twenty-two years ago)

I think not.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Sunday, 11 January 2004 23:17 (twenty-two years ago)

I have seen @d@m's collection and it prominently features The Divine Secrets of the Ya Ya Sisterhood. So I'm sure he's going to recommend THAT.

Personally I am very fond of the Yellow Submarine DVD that finally came out; great sound, excellent picture, bizarre fucking film, lots of fun.

anthony kyle monday (akmonday), Monday, 12 January 2004 01:09 (twenty-two years ago)

And now that it is out, the four disc Looney Tunes collection is more than a little essential.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 12 January 2004 01:26 (twenty-two years ago)

I don't know if everything I have is essential, but I've tried to keep my ever-growing DVD collection at least moderately representative of my tastes. (By the way, if anyone knows of a similar program/website for CDs, I'd love to know of it.)

Eric H. (Eric H.), Monday, 12 January 2004 02:26 (twenty-two years ago)

Haha! I catalogued the Looney Tunes collection the other day! it rocks!

Nick Southall (Nick Southall), Monday, 12 January 2004 09:33 (twenty-two years ago)

wildabeast, Monday, 12 January 2004 12:42 (twenty-two years ago)

TOMBOT, Monday, 12 January 2004 13:22 (twenty-two years ago)

I work in the film & music (audiovisual!) department of Exeter university library - I literally (and boringly) add films to the library catalogue database.

Nick Southall (Nick Southall), Monday, 12 January 2004 13:29 (twenty-two years ago)

Was looking at buying Dirty Work on the weekend, and noticed the the special bonus features were entirely made up of "interactive menu, scene selection and Collectible booklet featuring the inside dirt on Dirty Work."

Huckleberry Mann (Horace Mann), Monday, 12 January 2004 15:11 (twenty-two years ago)

Spirited Away
Delicatessen
Old School (unrated version)
Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory
Pee Wee's Big Adventure
The Jerk
Stop Making Sense
Ghostbusters

nickalicious (nickalicious), Monday, 12 January 2004 15:16 (twenty-two years ago)

The wtf commentary track on The Rules of Attraction also.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Monday, 12 January 2004 15:16 (twenty-two years ago)

Jackass of course, if not for anything other than the Pontius and Steve-O commentary

chris (chris), Monday, 12 January 2004 15:28 (twenty-two years ago)

So instead I got the first season of SpongeBob Squarepants.

Huckleberry Mann (Horace Mann), Monday, 12 January 2004 15:29 (twenty-two years ago)

We should be lucky that Dirty Work is even on DVD...

dean! (deangulberry), Monday, 12 January 2004 18:31 (twenty-two years ago)

four years pass...

I have just, finally, joined LoveFilm. I had to name 10 DVDs I wanted to see.

Here they are!

--
A Bout de Souffle
Bande A Part
2046
Control
In The Mood For Love
My Blueberry Nights
Sixteen Candles
Some Kind Of Wonderful
Persepolis
The Lives Of Others
--

The first one came today! it's quite exciting. I think I may be going to change from someone who hasn't seen enough films and finds them hard to watch, to someone who is constantly trying to think of new films to order, scouring old Thomson columns for ideas, etc.

the pinefox, Thursday, 23 October 2008 13:19 (seventeen years ago)

btw I HAVE seen both those John Hughes pictures before
