I was there at the first international agreement to be electronically signed. An Taoiseach Bertie Ahern and Bill Clinton signed it with specially issued crypto cards, and then swapped them, because that's what they're used to doing with pens. Crypto experts looked on aghast.

I was there when this happened:
http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/articles/A15171-2004Jan14.html

I was on my way to go snowboarding in PA, 30 minutes too late. I got onto I-95 at 3:30, and got off an exit later...which took two fucking hours.

El Spinktor (El Spinktor), Wednesday, 14 January 2004 16:56 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah, stone roses.. we all went to the NME band tent laughing, crying, you know ...

mark grout (mark grout), Wednesday, 14 January 2004 16:59 (twenty-two years ago)

I have never been present at any event of significance. I can't even manage to be around for the regular DC/Baltimore corridor massive traffic accidents, only for the ensuing fallout and radio announcements. In the past two weeks I have managed to NOT SEE:
1. An SUV flipped over onto the orange line metro tracks
2. The aforementioned tanker truck explosion
3. A truck accidentally dumping a load of concrete slabs onto the beltway this morning.

TOMBOT, Wednesday, 14 January 2004 17:25 (twenty-two years ago)

Not that anyone cares whatsoever, but I was there when Camille punched Meagan in the cafeteria and ripped the pocket right off her shirt. All-girls Catholic school was brutal.

Jeanne Fury (Jeanne Fury), Wednesday, 14 January 2004 17:54 (twenty-two years ago)

CharlieNo4 (Charlie), Wednesday, 14 January 2004 17:59 (twenty-two years ago)

One night a few years ago I was hanging with Richey Manic when he was suddenly snatched up by men in black coats who told him "It's time, Richey". He just sort of nodded and muttered something about "going away for awhile and dreaming it all up again". I told him he stole that from U2, he started crying, and they led him away.

Gear! (Gear!), Wednesday, 14 January 2004 19:10 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm sorry Jeanne but to this hetero male human your story sounds HAWT.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Wednesday, 14 January 2004 19:12 (twenty-two years ago)

I was at the Replacements last show, I think. In Chicago, with Tommy singing up in front during the encore, roadies came up to the band memebers behind him and took over their instruments without him noticing. When he finished the song, he turned around and saw he was playing with the roadies backing him and he got pissed and threw down his bass and walked off stage.

BrianB (BrianB), Wednesday, 14 January 2004 19:47 (twenty-two years ago)

I was there when the Hudson's building in Downtown Detroit was imploded. I was there when Urge Overkill played their second-to-last show before breaking up on the "exit the dragon" tour.

webcrack (music=crack), Wednesday, 14 January 2004 20:58 (twenty-two years ago)

I was also at the last Manics gig with Richey, and the first they did without him. I was there when Celtic lost the UEFA Cup Final. I was there when the stage collapsed when the Pixies played in Glasgow.

ailsa (ailsa), Wednesday, 14 January 2004 21:46 (twenty-two years ago)

I once saw a Firebird hit another car, flip over multiple times, smash into a brick fence, and then blow up. And I wasn't at a movie theatre when it happened. It was out on a regular street. I was 14. I have never matched that level of excitement again. I think, honestly, any suicidal thoughts I've ever had since then have been purely on the basis of realizing that, no matter how old I get, I WILL NEVER EVER SEE ANYTHING LIKE THAT AGAIN.

Also, Richey Manic was driving that Firebird.

(NB that might not have been true)

Trafalgar Square. Anti-polltax. History. etc.

Ha ha -- I was there too, but only in the afternoon when the vibe was still all partylike. Me and my girlfriend and a few other friends were hanging out in London for the day, but we had to catch a train back to Manchester in the evening, so we cut out before anything really happened. Just a lot of speeches and kids with anti-Maggie signs and stuff. We took photos, which I still have somewhere. But so then the whole riot and everything happened while we were in transit back north, unbeknownst to us, and when we got back to our house our roommates were all freaked out because they'd been watching the coverage on TV and they thought we might have gotten caught in the riot, trampled by police horses, tear-gassed or whatever. Instead, we were playing card games on the train. So, we were there, but then again, we weren't.

...when I was born.

Tuomas (Tuomas), Thursday, 15 January 2004 08:29 (twenty-two years ago)

Trafalgar Square. Anti-polltax. History. etc.

with some friends, hung around all partylike, Tony Benn came made a brief speech and went back to his birthday party. Decided to make a move round about then, and wandered down towards Charing Cross. About then, things started happening and various police vans started arriving, pushing through crowds. That was when things got even more heated but even then it was fairly even tempered, I lost my friends while (with a few people) helping police re-erect some crash barriers and get behind them. But the vans pushed through anyway, people close to getting run-over, more shouting, a brick smashed against the windscreen (picking brickdust out of my hair the whole weekend..). I saw various 'pensioners against the poll tax' with head injuries from being manhandled behind barriers (I'd given up helping when the 'assistance' from the boys and girls in blue got a bit too forceful for my liking), and looking down an alleyway seeng loads of bobbing heads, and ten minutes later realised that they were all riot police on horseback, decided to get the hell out (close enough to the station by then..) So I went for a cappucino at the entrance to the station (I was hanging around just in case I found my friends), about 1/4 hour later went back out and saw trafalgar square covered in people running, avoiding horses or defending themselves against attack, it all looked like some kind of weird magic roundabout.... So I went back and set onto the tube to ealing broadway station, where my friends were waiting for me with some relief that I was OK (Me for them too). And so we went home.

Monday morning, a telegraph reader was like "So, you proud then?" I say, give me that paper, and read. I:"Have you read this", he"No.." I:"This is actually pretty accurate" and so he did. It was not the work of anarchists, there were about ten, tops, with black flags. Or 'activists'. Or nutters. Normal People. Nice people. People the telegraph would approve of.

It was a couple of years before I felt not-weird at trafalgar square.

I was there when they raised the NY State drinking age from 19 to 21. Yeah, in the actual Capitol watching the assembly from the balcony. I was nowhere near 19, but still it made me sad to know that it would be even longer before I could drink.

the river fleet, Thursday, 15 January 2004 11:36 (twenty-two years ago)

I saw Joe Horn make his cellphone call from the endzone last month. More satisfying was watching the Saints fuck the Giants whole shit up. It was awesome.

adam (adam), Thursday, 15 January 2004 13:21 (twenty-two years ago)

While walking down the road one day a few years ago I saw someone flick a cigarette butt off a shop window right onto its end so it sat there on the street smoking like a wee chimney.

hmmmmm (neil simpson), Thursday, 15 January 2004 13:29 (twenty-two years ago)

I was there when Eddie Murray got his 3,000th hit. And Ken Griffey Jr's 1,000th.

(sadly, these events took place in the Metrodome. Ugh.)

nate detritus (natedetritus), Friday, 16 January 2004 02:48 (twenty-two years ago)

TIME Magazine celebrated it's 75th Anniversary party at Radio City Music Hall in 1998. Clinked glasses with the late George Plimpton, admired Sean Connery's manly pony-tail from a distance, saw Lee Iaccoca give F.Lee Bailey a hug not five feet in front of me, and had to squeeze by Dr.Jack Kevorkian on the stairs, rubbing elbows with him. Right afterwards, I turned to my colleague Christy and said "I just had a brush with death!" We laughed.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Friday, 16 January 2004 03:30 (twenty-two years ago)

I was there at Wembley when Wealdstone became the first side to do the non-league double (with Vinny Jones on the bench), was at the front when Edwyn Collins' band rioted at Reading, was at Paul Haig's only gig in England since the mid-80s, and was at a crap cable TV chart show recording when a girl standing next to me threw something at a pre-Absolute Beginners Patsy Kensit warbling away on stage, causing Patsy to start a cat-fight with said girl and subsequently fall out of her miniscule upper body stagewear.

darren (darren), Friday, 16 January 2004 11:19 (twenty-two years ago)

I was there in '92 when Sonic Youth played in the SoCal desert wasteland known as Castail lake, supported by Pavement and Mudhoney, with Kurt Cobain doing a suprise solo set in between.
