The German (english dubbed) commercials

not the vorsprung ones...

The ones where instead of stumping up and filming new ads, they use a foreign language original where the new dialogue 'almost' matches the lip movements, or the lip movements are obscured...

Only, the humour is so regional (German ones particularly) to render the ad pointless..

I haven't seen one like that for ages. Examples?

Wasn't there a relatively recent shampoo advert like that?

Although not strictly an advert I think "The Ledgend of Tim Tyler" was a very badly dubbed German series

'Not strictly'?

They do this in Germany too, only reversed.

What's really weird is the German commercials dubbed into German. Ferrero, the folks who bring you Nutella and Kinder Eggs, are especially bad at this -- I once saw an American actor I've met before in a chocolate commercial, desperately attempting to mouth German words while some soap opera actor did his voice.

Also bizzarely, the Gillette "The best a man can get" ad was sung in german BY THE SAME PEOPLE/VOICES!! wonder how many languages they got through that day...

what really annoys me is where they dub American accents with British ones. Just For Men, for example.

MarkH (MarkH), Wednesday, 14 January 2004 13:17 (twenty-two years ago)

there's a few where I can't work out whether its dubbed from American accents to British ones or not. Like the one with the 2 girls for facial wipes where one says "I saw you with Rob!" and the other one says "Nothing happened!"

MarkH (MarkH), Wednesday, 14 January 2004 13:20 (twenty-two years ago)

The worst ones is when the little girls are "like totally awesome yeah" in british accents..

There was this ad for these chocolate candy drops ("Not too sweet!") that had there obvious German actors doing the back and forth, dubbed into English quite successfully, I have to say. Can't remember the name of the candy - begins with R, I'm sure...

"their" actors. damn typos - makes me mad.

I find it more offensive that they didn't bother to modify their manky packet design to fit British tastes.

Another amusing thing is going to Vienna and seeing German commercials dubbed by voices with Austrian accents.

Colin Meeder (Mert), Wednesday, 14 January 2004 14:53 (twenty-two years ago)

I don't like the english dubbed spanish ones for the tampons that are so discreet they look like they might be a sweet or sugar packet.

marianna, Wednesday, 14 January 2004 15:26 (twenty-two years ago)

I've always been very suspicious of Mentos ads... something just doesn't feel right about them. By 'right' I mean American.

I remember which one it was now (OK so I sayw it again last night).

Woman with short hairstyle unpacks a make yourself bookcase
Man leaves the room to get tools
He comes back in, woman has built and completed bookcase and is wiping hands in a self satisfied way.
Man looks flustered.

It's an advert for Hand cream. It's German humour and women watching it feel distinctly patronised. That one...
