I had a phase when I was about 17 when I was really material and read Arena magazine.

I carried a briefcase instead of a backpack for second-grade.

miloauckerman (miloauckerman), Wednesday, 14 January 2004 22:21 (twenty-two years ago)

Computer geek from the age of about 12 to about 20, when i discovered punk/indie rock and things changed.

Kingfishee (Kingfish), Wednesday, 14 January 2004 22:22 (twenty-two years ago)

That's funny, because I was also going to say "being a 14 year old Sebadoh fan".

Fat Alberet (nordicskilla), Wednesday, 14 January 2004 22:23 (twenty-two years ago)

when I was 14, I loved Aerosmith.

Kingfishee (Kingfish), Wednesday, 14 January 2004 22:28 (twenty-two years ago)

I read this as:

What weird phrases did you go through as a child/teenager?

and was going to say, "that's so corporate." (14-16)

I went through a Nostradamus phase around 12.

Dale the Titled (cprek), Wednesday, 14 January 2004 22:31 (twenty-two years ago)

gay (9 years old)

well, its not really weird i suppose.

mullygrubber (gaz), Wednesday, 14 January 2004 22:42 (twenty-two years ago)

Hahaha!

Fat Alberet (nordicskilla), Wednesday, 14 January 2004 22:44 (twenty-two years ago)

I was some kind of fundamentalist Christian when I was about 12-13. Not a nasty one, though. I was also very superstitious, which I tried to reconcile with my faith by choosing to obsess over the number 3.

N. (nickdastoor), Wednesday, 14 January 2004 22:45 (twenty-two years ago)

I was extremely rude and obnoxious (and probably a bit odd) from age 14 to about 16. I had my friends and things but I would say the meanest things to people for no real reason.

Ronan (Ronan), Wednesday, 14 January 2004 22:48 (twenty-two years ago)

I was probably the most sarcastic teenager ever. It was beyond parody.

Fat Alberet (nordicskilla), Wednesday, 14 January 2004 22:49 (twenty-two years ago)

at about 7 i was a control freak with some strange sadistic bent. i used to invent games that would have my friends crawling on their stomachs across the playground. slowest wins.

mullygrubber (gaz), Wednesday, 14 January 2004 22:51 (twenty-two years ago)

I can relate to "most sarcastic teenager ever" yeah, totally beyond parody also.

Ronan (Ronan), Wednesday, 14 January 2004 22:52 (twenty-two years ago)

oh god please don't ask both phases are too embarassing for words.

The Lady Ms Lurex (lucylurex), Wednesday, 14 January 2004 22:53 (twenty-two years ago)

They're all too cringeworthy to recount here or anywhere.

El Diablo Robotico (Nicole), Wednesday, 14 January 2004 22:54 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh c'mon, both of you!

Fat Alberet (nordicskilla), Wednesday, 14 January 2004 22:54 (twenty-two years ago)

i was just an awkward nerd until first year uni, although i did become a music geek of sorts around the age of 14, so i guess that counts.

the surface noise (electricsound), Wednesday, 14 January 2004 22:54 (twenty-two years ago)

And this is different from your adult self how, exactly?

anthony kyle monday (akmonday), Wednesday, 14 January 2004 22:55 (twenty-two years ago)

I was even shorter.

Fat Alberet (nordicskilla), Wednesday, 14 January 2004 22:56 (twenty-two years ago)

outgoing with lots of friends (25-27)

mullygrubber (gaz), Wednesday, 14 January 2004 23:08 (twenty-two years ago)

I had a terrible beard for a while in my early 20s. I look at old photos and wonder what the fuck i was thinking. Or why I didn't at least trim it.

Fat Alberet (nordicskilla), Wednesday, 14 January 2004 23:10 (twenty-two years ago)

i grew my hair very long when i was 17. chopped it all off at 21. i had an afro that At The Drive In could only DREAM of

the surface noise (electricsound), Wednesday, 14 January 2004 23:11 (twenty-two years ago)

i watched a lot of dr. who as an early teenager. sure this might be cool in some way now but believe me at the time it was NOT.

i wore suits and ties to class in college. this was because I was always hung over or coming down and thought it showed less if I dressed up.

anthony kyle monday (akmonday), Wednesday, 14 January 2004 23:13 (twenty-two years ago)

3rd grade - athlete
4th grade - criminal
5th grade - brain
6th grade - basketcase
7th grade - um, not a princess

A Nairn (moretap), Wednesday, 14 January 2004 23:14 (twenty-two years ago)

i was happy

g--ff (gcannon), Wednesday, 14 January 2004 23:14 (twenty-two years ago)

Chuck Tatum (Chuck Tatum), Wednesday, 14 January 2004 23:17 (twenty-two years ago)

I never, ever removed my black sweater.

Chuck Tatum (Chuck Tatum), Wednesday, 14 January 2004 23:17 (twenty-two years ago)

In grade one I always had to have a hat on in the evenings, my favourite hat was a brown wool sherpa-toque thingy. For a while in my first year of uni I had an anti-fashion phase, and wore pleated jeans, lost-and-found-bin shirts and a green shawl-necked curling sweater.

Poppy (poppy), Wednesday, 14 January 2004 23:18 (twenty-two years ago)

i have but one be-afro'd photograph of me. if i ever scan it, i'll probably have been quite drunk.

the surface noise (electricsound), Wednesday, 14 January 2004 23:19 (twenty-two years ago)

Does being a difficult, whiny prick for four years count as a weird phase?

Chuck Tatum (Chuck Tatum), Wednesday, 14 January 2004 23:20 (twenty-two years ago)

My beard made me look like a cross between a rabbi and a happy Ewok.

Fat Alberet (nordicskilla), Wednesday, 14 January 2004 23:21 (twenty-two years ago)

Come now, Chuck.

Fat Alberet (nordicskilla), Wednesday, 14 January 2004 23:22 (twenty-two years ago)

That was a classic beard, man, I don't care what anyone else said ;-)

Chuck Tatum (Chuck Tatum), Wednesday, 14 January 2004 23:35 (twenty-two years ago)

I cried a lot (9-13). Then I played football and read Orwell. Then i smoked lots of dope. Now I'm here. Via some other stuff.

Nick Southall (Nick Southall), Wednesday, 14 January 2004 23:51 (twenty-two years ago)

Hmm. I was quiet shy and reclusive. Then I started running insane distances. Then I started smoking dope and became a slightly surlier version of my current self.

Matt (Matt), Thursday, 15 January 2004 00:34 (twenty-two years ago)

Hm...hm. I must have done something. I mostly remember reading and listening to music and being sarcastic, so that's probably why I feel like I'm still 19 somehow.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 15 January 2004 01:10 (twenty-two years ago)

Really really long hair. It was Dud.

Dan I., Thursday, 15 January 2004 01:20 (twenty-two years ago)

Aw.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 15 January 2004 01:20 (twenty-two years ago)

haha

Dan I., Thursday, 15 January 2004 01:20 (twenty-two years ago)

WAH!

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 15 January 2004 01:21 (twenty-two years ago)

yeah, I cut it after I realized that they all used to laugh at it behind my back! "That weird guy with the really long hair!"
They pointed and stared as they do to all men with long hair, HAHAHA.

Dan I., Thursday, 15 January 2004 01:25 (twenty-two years ago)

I shall not be moved.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 15 January 2004 01:32 (twenty-two years ago)

12 - sad and picked on
13 - transforming slowly through to West Midlands indie girl (see: Pop Will Eat Itself; Wonderstuff; Blessed Ethel; Ned's Atomic Dustbin)
14 - Grunge will overcome.
15 - Anorexia - The Manics
16 -Britpop followed by Standard Suburban Skater Phase
17 - "I'm not going to clubs unless I can wear trainers" ie drum 'n' bass, Andy Weatherall
(I diversified from then)

(bit drunk, sorry)

Anna (Anna), Thursday, 15 January 2004 01:39 (twenty-two years ago)

in late elementary school and middle school, I would try to enter conversations by creating a surreal, self-amusing "what if" scenario about the discussion subject. If nobody reacted positively (which was usually the case), I'd then say "that would be weird."

I really don't like to think about childhood/adolescence.
