Even moreso than usual, I mean. Starting there and continuing through at least today or tomorrow.

It isn't significantly more meta than most other mailboxes. I think I remember one involving them in the dialogue balloon storage room.

I do like that Zonk's shirt appears to the the Geocities(?) no image found pattern.

One of my favourites was the Doonesbury where Alex felt a change coming, and Mike explained that it was perfectly natural at about that age, then her eyes turned from kiddie-round to the Doonesbury Eye.

I remember back before the sabbatical, Trudeau would always throw a change in some static decoration in the last panel. You'd see a painting hanging on the wall for the first five panels, and in the last, it would be a different color.

I keep getting Duke's son confused with Joanie's son. I hate the fact that the strip has kinda morphed into "Donnesbury Babies".

Tripod!

As Sweet As Melody (Dee the Lurker), Friday, 16 January 2004 07:18 (twenty-two years ago)

I love my books of Doonesburys from the '70s. Even the ones I read from the '80s were pretty good, but these days it's just weak.

(Should I be embarassed that a big part of my early political education was gleaned from used Doonesbury collections?)

Yes, but it's true of me too.

Casuistry (Chris P), Friday, 16 January 2004 07:31 (twenty-two years ago)

one year passes...
This day has finally come.

Pleasant Plains /// (Pleasant Plains ///), Tuesday, 8 March 2005 22:21 (twenty-one years ago)

Heh. I was wondering what he might do.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 8 March 2005 22:30 (twenty-one years ago)

didn't HST shoot himself?

RJG (RJG), Tuesday, 8 March 2005 22:32 (twenty-one years ago)

Yes...

Michael White (Hereward), Tuesday, 8 March 2005 22:33 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm not sure how HST's method of demise is particularly relevant to what's been presented in the strip so far.

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 8 March 2005 22:35 (twenty-one years ago)

it is a little tasteless, i mean his head explodes TWICE

Aaron A., Tuesday, 8 March 2005 22:43 (twenty-one years ago)

that's all I'm saying.

RJG (RJG), Tuesday, 8 March 2005 22:44 (twenty-one years ago)

I saw that today and didn't care for it much. I guess I'd just like some time to pass before we start mining the method of suicide for humor.

milozauckerman (miloaukerman), Tuesday, 8 March 2005 22:47 (twenty-one years ago)

Uh, Duke's head is exploding as a result of his disbelief, if there is any reference to HST's self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head, it's merely 'Gonzo' comicry.

Michael White (Hereward), Tuesday, 8 March 2005 22:48 (twenty-one years ago)

I read the strip the way Michael read it.

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 8 March 2005 22:49 (twenty-one years ago)

ok

RJG (RJG), Tuesday, 8 March 2005 22:50 (twenty-one years ago)

I think Duke's history of having an exploding/shape-changing head after ingesting some random drug is being played upon here as well, much more so than the fact that HST shot himself in the head.

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 8 March 2005 22:52 (twenty-one years ago)

I agree with Michael and Dan. Even if the top of Duke's head unhinges tomorrow and a smaller Duke jumps out waving a gun, I don't think it would reference HST's method of retirment.

Sheesh, x-post!

Pleasant Plains /// (Pleasant Plains ///), Tuesday, 8 March 2005 22:53 (twenty-one years ago)

I didn't know about history

RJG (RJG), Tuesday, 8 March 2005 22:54 (twenty-one years ago)

Huh. Well this might be me, but I see it as a multiple referencing to both the suicide method and the conventions established for Duke. I sorta think that's the whole point!

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 8 March 2005 22:55 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm not saying that there isn't an element of reference to the suicide there at all, more that I didn't read that as the primary reference largely because I've been reading about this character since I was 5 and have seen Trudeau do stuff like this to him before. (In my first post, I should have said "specifically relevant" rather than "particularly relevant"; also even without the association to the suicide method I don't think it's being played for laughs at all.)

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 8 March 2005 22:58 (twenty-one years ago)

I agree w/Ned. I said if there is any reference to HST's self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head, it's merely 'Gonzo' comicry.
Considering HST's lifestyle, writing style, and manner of taking himself out, I hardly think anyone needs to walk around on eggshells. HST wouldn't have.

Michael White (Hereward), Tuesday, 8 March 2005 23:03 (twenty-one years ago)

I believe that this is written in the same way that Walt Kelly handled his Earnest Hemingway character in "Pogo".

Pleasant Plains /// (Pleasant Plains ///), Tuesday, 8 March 2005 23:16 (twenty-one years ago)

Or the way Nast would've done Lincoln.

Forksclovetofu (Forksclovetofu), Wednesday, 9 March 2005 02:48 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh, so Lincoln WAS gay. Er, wait.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 9 March 2005 02:49 (twenty-one years ago)

what about Lindsey Graham?

gabbneb (gabbneb), Wednesday, 9 March 2005 03:11 (twenty-one years ago)

I don't think you guys are reading near enough into this exploding head motif. Give Trudeau some credit.

Aaron A., Wednesday, 9 March 2005 03:30 (twenty-one years ago)

Meta into meta:
