Do you ever drink (alcohol, that is) before noon?

Incredibly as it appears to me, approaching 38 y.o., I don't think I've ever really done any drinking before noon in my entire life. Sure, there's probably the odd 11:30 beer w/ lunch sprinkled through my past, but as far as getting up in the morning and having any kind of hankering for alcohol -- including mimosas, Bloody Marys, etc. -- I think I'm clean. Part of it has to do with me really not being a morning person, but also that I prefer to compartmentalize when I can get crazy and when I can't. I often find too many drinx with lunch to be a recipe for disaster; thus, I Drink At Night.

Do you also drink alone? Do you prefer to be by yourself?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 16 January 2004 20:32 (twenty-two years ago)

I hate being drunk and then having day left. So I rarely drink in the day.

Luigi Vampa (Horace Mann), Friday, 16 January 2004 20:33 (twenty-two years ago)

that is to say, I like to drink myself to sleep.

Luigi Vampa (Horace Mann), Friday, 16 January 2004 20:33 (twenty-two years ago)

We did this on a Japanese ferry in college; three of my good friends, the assistant conductor of our group and I assaulted the beer vending machine and went to town at 9:00 AM. We were ridiculously lit by the time we hit land.

I used to have a few close friends who I either lived with or nearby, and we would make it a regular occurrence to go out to someplace like the Rainbo, Gold Star, Tuman's Tavern, etc. in Wicker Park. But, both of them moved away about 4-5 years ago, so that killed off that avenue of drinking entertainment. My wife isn't a real big drinker as far as bars go, and we now live in a neighborhood where I have NO friends whatsoever, so for the most part, it's drinking alone for me. Sort of sad, but what can ya do? I do miss those 'boys nights out'.

I have not had a Fourth of July in four years wherein I hadn't had more than a few beers before noon. Outside, nice summer weather, live music around every corner, all the beautiful people, wasted, 11:30 am...CLASSIC.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Friday, 16 January 2004 20:50 (twenty-two years ago)

Beer in the morning rules, especially when it's super hot. You feel like some scrappy B&W West Texas Paul Newman movie or something. It's best to drink it unshaven, with no shirt, chinos and black cowboy boots. Tumbleweed and oil rigs ad the correct ambience.

andy, Friday, 16 January 2004 20:58 (twenty-two years ago)

I think I've told this story before, but at Berkeley, my friend Dom walked into the dining common, wrapped in a blanket and got a bowl of cereal. He then sat down and proceeded to pull beers out from under the blanket and poured them in the cereal.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Friday, 16 January 2004 21:00 (twenty-two years ago)

Andy, that is me every saturday morning.

Spencer, I think I dated your friend Dom.

Viva La Sam (thatgirl), Friday, 16 January 2004 21:03 (twenty-two years ago)

haha, if you've ever lived in Long Beach, maybe you have!

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Friday, 16 January 2004 21:09 (twenty-two years ago)

At ten o'clock this morning, a friend of mine showed up at my door with two six-packs and said, "I brought breakfast. Again." I feel fine.

kirsten (kirsten), Friday, 16 January 2004 21:34 (twenty-two years ago)

in college, it was always nice to sit out on the porch in nice weather and have a beer before lunch. now i usually only drink in the morning if i'm still carrying on from the night before. whoo!

lauren (laurenp), Friday, 16 January 2004 21:40 (twenty-two years ago)

only when i'm still up from the night before
i couldn't wake up and start drinking...

robin (robin), Friday, 16 January 2004 21:48 (twenty-two years ago)

This thread inspired me to go get a beer out of the fridge. Granted it's not before noon anymore but I've only been out of bed for an hour or so.

Viva La Sam (thatgirl), Friday, 16 January 2004 22:01 (twenty-two years ago)

I like to do this at the beach, after my morning swim.

three years pass...

not much, late night boozer (like now), but the few times i've done it - classic!

gershy, Wednesday, 21 November 2007 08:57 (eighteen years ago)

It's okay to have a beer with lunch sometimes, and if lunch starts at 11:30, so what?

Oilyrags, Wednesday, 21 November 2007 12:52 (eighteen years ago)

The same is true of eight shots at breakfast, now that I think about it.

Oilyrags, Wednesday, 21 November 2007 13:07 (eighteen years ago)

On vacation I tend to drink. Tomorrow, for example, I got a pre-Thanksgiving brunch. Booyah!

Alfred, Lord Sotosyn, Wednesday, 21 November 2007 16:07 (eighteen years ago)

Once I started drinking vodka at 10am ad watching Star Wars Ep. 4, that day was epic, but I was 17 or 18. Now, at the ripe old age of 23, I don't think I could handle it.

Will M., Wednesday, 21 November 2007 16:10 (eighteen years ago)

not often. w33d on the other hand...

Brigadier Pudding, Wednesday, 21 November 2007 16:13 (eighteen years ago)

there's not that many waking hours before noon (due to drinking the night before til late)

ken c, Wednesday, 21 November 2007 16:15 (eighteen years ago)

Ans: yes. Not frequently, but after all, it's always after noon somewhere in the world.

Laurel, Wednesday, 21 November 2007 16:17 (eighteen years ago)

i've only really done this tailgating for college football games. the world can be quite fun when you've funnelled half a case of natural light before 11.

as an old buddy of mine used to say "you can't drink all day if you don't start in the morning"

swinburningforyou, Wednesday, 21 November 2007 16:24 (eighteen years ago)

On vacation - definitely. We had cocktails poolside at 10:00am in Vegas. See also: college and festivals.

ENBB, Wednesday, 21 November 2007 16:31 (eighteen years ago)

it makes me sreepy

carne asada, Wednesday, 21 November 2007 16:37 (eighteen years ago)

I prefer a wake ‘n bake

carne asada, Wednesday, 21 November 2007 16:38 (eighteen years ago)

It makes me weepy and sleepy, but if you're gonna have a breakdown anyway it might as well be alcohol-fueled and as messy as possible, and then you're going to need a nap.

Laurel, Wednesday, 21 November 2007 16:38 (eighteen years ago)

Unfortunately we don't get out of here until 1pm today.

Laurel, Wednesday, 21 November 2007 16:41 (eighteen years ago)

flask in your desk is key

gershy, Wednesday, 21 November 2007 16:41 (eighteen years ago)

Booze in the coffee on Crimmus morning, and beers before 2 p.m. on warm days off, and I'm drinking some rum right now at noon bcz ain't got shit to do but laundry and it's way better than going to the laundromat on shrooms, I promise.

Abbott, Wednesday, 21 November 2007 19:19 (eighteen years ago)

Call me a boozer, but I love hair-of-the-dog morning drinks (mimosas, Bloody Marys, etc.), particularly if on some sort of brunch occasion.

Pillbox, Wednesday, 21 November 2007 19:45 (eighteen years ago)

7 a.m. beers while setting up a tent at an all-day BBQ cook-off = CLASSIC

Rock Hardy, Wednesday, 21 November 2007 19:46 (eighteen years ago)

I'd also like to add that, in Dublin, many pubs start filling up at 10-11 am, and that it is perfectly acceptable to drink Guinness with your breakfast.

Pillbox, Wednesday, 21 November 2007 19:46 (eighteen years ago)

Where is it not acceptable?

mh, Thursday, 22 November 2007 01:26 (eighteen years ago)

Idaho.

Abbott, Thursday, 22 November 2007 01:41 (eighteen years ago)

Utah.

Abbott, Thursday, 22 November 2007 01:42 (eighteen years ago)

Then you're running with the wrong company!

mh, Thursday, 22 November 2007 01:44 (eighteen years ago)

answer: yesh.
pub's open at 10 for a reason.

W4LTER, Thursday, 22 November 2007 01:45 (eighteen years ago)

Any greasy spoon place that specializes in breakfast that doesn't serve bloody marys and screwdrivers, or even just beer, have another thought coming.

mh, Thursday, 22 November 2007 01:45 (eighteen years ago)

never

jergïns, Thursday, 22 November 2007 01:50 (eighteen years ago)

A couple of shots of rotgut always helps fire me up for the kid's pre-school thrashing

badg, Thursday, 22 November 2007 01:55 (eighteen years ago)

done it with lunch a handful of times. i never drink alone and hardly ever at home(unless there's company) so it's all of a piece.

tremendoid, Thursday, 22 November 2007 02:10 (eighteen years ago)

i had a beer at 8 a.m. this past sunday. but i'd been up all night playing cards, so it didn't feel quite as dissolute as waking up out of bed and reaching for a brew. at a few all-weekend parties (festivals and the like) i've started the day with a shot of whiskey or tequila. mostly though i don't want anything but coffee until well into the day.

tipsy mothra, Thursday, 22 November 2007 03:01 (eighteen years ago)

if i have the leisure to drink before noon i'd just as soon sleep

bell_labs, Thursday, 22 November 2007 04:12 (eighteen years ago)

"you can't drink all day if you don't start in the morning"

so true. there's nothing quite like the feeling of drinking for nine hours straight and it's still light outside..

electricsound, Thursday, 22 November 2007 04:16 (eighteen years ago)

Oh god, getting a hangover before sunset is a particular brand of gross.

Trayce, Thursday, 22 November 2007 04:18 (eighteen years ago)

that's only if you make the mistake of stopping drinking

electricsound, Thursday, 22 November 2007 04:20 (eighteen years ago)

Spoken like a pro ;D

Trayce, Thursday, 22 November 2007 04:47 (eighteen years ago)

BELLS LABD YES EXACTLY
