I remember my dad used to bring home licorice root when I was a kid. It was quite woody and you chewed it (there's no way you could eat it, well, not unless you were a yak or termite or soemthing). But the key thing was it was brown, not black.

Hahaha in Borgel by Daniel Pinkwater this kid and his talking dog get stranded by an intergalactic ice cream shop on a space highway that selld only licorice ice cream. The kid and dog find a bag of cough drops in their missing uncle's car and fight over it hardcore, bcz the ice cream is unpleasant and they've eaten it for weeks.

man I love black licorice but think it is totally unnecessary to hate on red licorice just 'cause you love the real stuff. Red licorice is yummy. Red vines, red ropes, nibs, fuck yeah red licorice. If you had to save one and destroy the other, obviously you'd save black because, c'mon, it's licorice, but people need to back the fuck off red licorice 'cause the shit tastes good all right thanks.
