social greetings:
i used to do a REAL kiss. soft. often with a slight touch on the back.

but now i'm going for a lean near, no real contact.

i've never done a MWAA!

whats the best?

mullygrubber (gaz), Saturday, 17 January 2004 07:01 (twenty-two years ago)

Also, it depends from region to region (in Belgium) how many kisses you give. Here, in West Flanders, we tend to give 3, whereas in Antwerp I think 2 are given. I slap'em on! I have the air kisses. BAH!

nathalie (nathalie), Saturday, 17 January 2004 08:07 (twenty-two years ago)

I kiss few people upon greeting them, and usually only if I haven't seen 'em in a while. Else it just seems awkward. I'm more of a hugger.

Ian Johnson (orion), Saturday, 17 January 2004 09:28 (twenty-two years ago)

I get really confused. I've never been a big cheek-kisser. But my partner's family does it left, right and center. (Well, no, just left and right, usually) and I get confused, one kiss, two kiss, red kiss, blue kiss, what if I miss and kiss their nose by mistake... I never know.

the river fleet, Saturday, 17 January 2004 10:27 (twenty-two years ago)

are there regional differences in left or right first? In Italy it's right first, then left.

teeny (teeny), Saturday, 17 January 2004 10:27 (twenty-two years ago)

i've always had this feeling i've been doing it all wrong

mullygrubber (gaz), Saturday, 17 January 2004 10:29 (twenty-two years ago)

Teeny, is that so? I'd never noticed one cheek was first. Makes sense, though.

Being Italian I always have an excuse to go for two (not in a lechy way, I just mean it gives me a sort of rule). What I find more of a problem is when you go for a kiss and get a hug or vice versa, especially if their hug-lunge means you end up kissing their neck or ear which is very embarrassing!

Markelby (Mark C), Saturday, 17 January 2004 11:07 (twenty-two years ago)

Worst is when they trip you up and you end up fellating them.

N. (nickdastoor), Saturday, 17 January 2004 14:54 (twenty-two years ago)

Cheek and air-kissing are fun but predictable. Headbutts are the real shit.

Le Coq (DarrenK), Saturday, 17 January 2004 15:02 (twenty-two years ago)

is that an air-fellate or a proper contact one?

jed_ (jed), Saturday, 17 January 2004 15:47 (twenty-two years ago)

Air-fellating sounds like what a Ziggy Stardust wannabe does on a Air Guitarist finalist.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Sunday, 18 January 2004 01:08 (twenty-two years ago)

I thought is was one of them big grey animals with a trunk.

Johnney B (Johnney B), Sunday, 18 January 2004 01:12 (twenty-two years ago)

There are plenty of things I despise, and one of them is weak hugs. Drives me nuts. Same thing with kisses on the cheek. KISS THE CHEEK. It's a hard target to miss. Don't go kissing air. If you're going to do that, don't bother. (Obviously, this applies to people who I'm comfortable with and vice versa, otherwise we wouldn't be having any sort of physical contact. A jolly "Hi there!" would suffice.)

Jeanne Fury (Jeanne Fury), Sunday, 18 January 2004 02:02 (twenty-two years ago)

Hi there!

Francis Watlington (Francis Watlington), Sunday, 18 January 2004 03:22 (twenty-two years ago)

OK, so when doing this is it alright for your lips to touch the person's cheek? I am worried that people think of me as that perv who actually kisses their cheeks when kissing their cheeks.

also, what about their being two types of cheeks? does this cause confusion?

DV (dirtyvicar), Sunday, 18 January 2004 09:54 (twenty-two years ago)

i don't do this cheek-kissing thing with anyone except who i'm REALLY fucking close to. otherwise it seems like a bullshit artwank thing to do and you should be ashamed of yerselves. i'm not into physical contact with people i couldn't give two shits about unless i wanna fuck em in which case YOU"LL KNOW.

The Lady Ms Lurex (lucylurex), Sunday, 18 January 2004 10:53 (twenty-two years ago)

i'm being a fascist, hasle me if you wanna.

The Lady Ms Lurex (lucylurex), Sunday, 18 January 2004 10:53 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm a lot more comfortable with it than I used to be. my ex used to hate it tho and denounce it as a poncey southern thing.

MarkH (MarkH), Sunday, 18 January 2004 14:15 (twenty-two years ago)

i'm really bad at this. in the states i often greet people with a big hug, a remnant from summer camp, i think.

here some people hug, some people kiss, some people double kiss, some people just shake hands. i came across all of these at the party last night and anything that involved kissing or double kissing just felt uncomfortable, especially with people i don't know.

i think we should all give 'high-fives' to people as a greeting.

colette (a2lette), Sunday, 18 January 2004 15:05 (twenty-two years ago)

Actually I agree. Kissing or double kissing people you don't know is a bit dud. Unless it's things like your or, more likely, your partner's family, because even if you don't technically know each other, it shows a kinship and it's a welcoming gesture.

High-fiving would be fantastic. Or even better, the Secret Indie Handshake.

the river fleet, Sunday, 18 January 2004 15:33 (twenty-two years ago)

what's the secret indie handshake? getting embarassed and running away?

Ronan (Ronan), Sunday, 18 January 2004 15:34 (twenty-two years ago)

Yup. And hiding under the table if girls are involved! ;-)

the river fleet, Sunday, 18 January 2004 15:45 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah and when you've run twenty feet away you scream out your email address.

Le Coq (DarrenK), Sunday, 18 January 2004 15:45 (twenty-two years ago)

haha, that's why it's so important to have a witty one.

Ronan (Ronan), Sunday, 18 January 2004 15:46 (twenty-two years ago)

finally my eternal singleness is explained!

Ronan (Ronan), Sunday, 18 January 2004 15:46 (twenty-two years ago)

By the time you get to the .dcu you always run into a lamppost. Or a small tree if you want to be indie about it.

Le Coq (DarrenK), Sunday, 18 January 2004 15:52 (twenty-two years ago)

a stack of belle and sebastian 45s

Ronan (Ronan), Sunday, 18 January 2004 15:52 (twenty-two years ago)

You keep running only after making sure you already own all of them.

Le Coq (DarrenK), Sunday, 18 January 2004 16:01 (twenty-two years ago)

and have deemed each one not as good as the last

Ronan (Ronan), Sunday, 18 January 2004 17:00 (twenty-two years ago)

every time i've tried giving gareth a hug he shudders like i've got a bad smell.

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Sunday, 18 January 2004 17:02 (twenty-two years ago)

he was not programmed to feel hugs

Ronan (Ronan), Sunday, 18 January 2004 17:03 (twenty-two years ago)

Don't take it personal, it's probably just the bad smell.

Le Coq (DarrenK), Sunday, 18 January 2004 17:04 (twenty-two years ago)

perhaps you should try kissing his cheek tracer?

Ronan (Ronan), Sunday, 18 January 2004 17:07 (twenty-two years ago)

but spreading my body-stink is how i show affection!

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Sunday, 18 January 2004 17:08 (twenty-two years ago)

I now imagine gareth/tracer as that warner brothers skunk duo.

Ronan (Ronan), Sunday, 18 January 2004 17:11 (twenty-two years ago)

now i know why he smokes so much when we meet at the pub!

my nickname at uni is actually "stinky," i'm kind of proud of that.

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Sunday, 18 January 2004 17:13 (twenty-two years ago)

Quick Ebay scam, you can thank me later: pics of teen girl + white panties, cheap + wiping your armpits with them + a little dab of Fa hand soap for credibility + reasonable fermentation period = $$$

Le Coq (DarrenK), Sunday, 18 January 2004 17:16 (twenty-two years ago)

This has actually been done by people I know.

Le Coq (DarrenK), Sunday, 18 January 2004 17:17 (twenty-two years ago)

I should probably get to bed now. You ILE lot aren't that bad after all. Goodnight!

Le Coq (DarrenK), Sunday, 18 January 2004 17:18 (twenty-two years ago)

double-bizoo is the montreal stylee!

s1ocki (slutsky), Sunday, 18 January 2004 17:21 (twenty-two years ago)

I should probably get to bed now.

You're in the same time zone as me and I only got up a couple of hours ago!

Ned Raggett (Ned), Sunday, 18 January 2004 17:25 (twenty-two years ago)

four months pass...
this was a good thread.

I kissed someone on the cheek on Sunday, and she said "that was awkward, I think you should do it again".

Ronan (Ronan), Tuesday, 8 June 2004 13:01 (twenty-two years ago)

You're so in there.

Crickets Dance On Tequila Booty (Barima), Tuesday, 8 June 2004 13:05 (twenty-two years ago)

That sounds rad! Were they cute?

This thread was funny.

Gregory Henry (Gregory Henry), Tuesday, 8 June 2004 13:05 (twenty-two years ago)

very cute, she has a boyfriend though, there's a history, it's all really nice and soppy. we're special friends. who sometimes kiss each other. I hadn't seen her in about 8 months though so it's nice we sort of reassessed and have promised to see each other more.

Ronan (Ronan), Tuesday, 8 June 2004 13:10 (twenty-two years ago)

Well, that "special friendship" sounds like it's about to move up a level. Actually, how the hell do you end up with all thse special female friends, Ro? What's going on there?

Crickets Dance On Tequila Booty (Barima), Tuesday, 8 June 2004 13:12 (twenty-two years ago)

ha! I have so few female friends really, my main circle of friends is very laddish, moreso than me, haha, and often sort of tiresome to be honest, at least collectively. I really am not one of those guys with loads of close female friends!

Ronan (Ronan), Tuesday, 8 June 2004 13:17 (twenty-two years ago)

Do you bone yr lad friends too?

Markelby (Mark C), Tuesday, 8 June 2004 13:18 (twenty-two years ago)

When Ronan goes clubbing, he wears a huge neon sign that says "Ladies, even if I ain't your type, I can be your special make-out buddy, text me at 0891-MAKE-OUT".

Crickets Dance On Tequila Booty (Barima), Tuesday, 8 June 2004 13:21 (twenty-two years ago)

I only fuck 20 something self conscious hipster cunts

Ronan (Ronan), Tuesday, 8 June 2004 13:21 (twenty-two years ago)

Yay for girlreturns!

I have one (totally cute) female friend who does cheek-kissing with me, somehow I have fallen into the habit of kissing the hair near her ear. It probably looks kinda silly.

Gregory Henry (Gregory Henry), Tuesday, 8 June 2004 13:25 (twenty-two years ago)

None of my close female friends kiss my cheeks, but I did get two of them to snog me when the icecube melted during a game of Pass The Icecube. In other news, ILX has heard hotter stories on The Weather Channel.

Crickets Dance On Tequila Booty (Barima), Tuesday, 8 June 2004 13:32 (twenty-two years ago)

I always feel awkward when I am called upon to do this. It's almost always with people I have just met, will likely never see again, or barely know and don't feel comfortable around. Once long ago I was introduced to a French couple and wasn't sure whether to go for a handshake or what, since everyone else knew them and had gone for the two-kiss thing, and didn't want to be presumptuous, so I thought I would wait for them to make the first move, and then while I smiled awkwardly they just sort of drew back and stared at me like I had crawled out of the dirt. It was terrible.
I am reminded of this nearly every time I do the empty-gesture-cheek-kiss thing. Outside of circumstances like Kate described above (significant other's family etc.) it feels like an invasion of my personal space and I would rather shake hands upon meeting someone for the first time and then just greet each other verbally afterwards.

sgs (sgs), Tuesday, 8 June 2004 14:00 (twenty-two years ago)

wow that was kind of a rant.

sgs (sgs), Tuesday, 8 June 2004 14:01 (twenty-two years ago)

Me, I shake hands on first meeting, maybe airkiss/brush my lips on their cheeks on saying goodbye and the airkissing continues into our association. Unless they're pissed and insist on kissing me on the cheek/lips/wherever (ooh, saucy).

Crickets Dance On Tequila Booty (Barima), Tuesday, 8 June 2004 14:03 (twenty-two years ago)

'Cause of all my fancy/poncey Euro and gay friends, I kiss everybody twice unless I can tell (know) that it makes them uncomfortable. In which case I kiss them at least 4 times.
