Toshiba SD330E DVD Player

So I got this for Christmas, bought from Amazon where it's advertsied as being 'multi region'. Only it isn't. A quick trawl of the net suggests I may need a 'firmware' disc to update the software on the player itself rather than a 'handset hack'. I've found a couple of places to download this firmware but they look slightly less than reliable. I also found one place that was sellign firmware discs for £20 a pop, which seems less than reliable once again. Has anyone else on ILX got one of these players and have you made it multi-region?

That's odd - I was thinking of buying that one myself and all the
customer reviews on Amazon say they've had no problem playing discs from other regions. What happens when you try to play them?

Do you need an NSTC capable TV to play back region 1 discs? Is this bit of the amazon.co.uk description of amy import?

To playback Region 1 discs will require an NTSC capable Television

But if Nick just has an old telly that doesn't support NTSC playback they would still work, just in black and white.

Do you know if the discs you're trying to play are RCE protected ones?

One thing to note is that many "region-free" Toshibas will not be able to play Region 1 RCE ("Region Code Enhancement" -- a new region enforcement scheme) DVDs without doing a hack via the remote control each time, unless the reseller's multi-region hardware fix can specifically handle RCE encoding. I bought my player at another online store for £20 more because I'm not sure if the players from Amazon are "RCE-friendly". But keep in mind that there are very few RCE-encoded DVD titles available right now so if this doesn't bother you (and especially if you don't buy Region 1 DVDs) then you might as well go for Amazon's cheap offering; I rate them very highly for the purchasing of goods.

Its a tenner cheaper in Richer Sounds than from amazon

My tele is brand new and NTSC capable. The screen goes grey and a small box says "Not authorised to play disc" or such if I try and play an R1 disc (I tried Badlands and also the Looney Tunes box set. I'm pretty sure they're not both RCE!

I'll check with my parents that they did get it from Amazon. I certainly told them too as it was multi-region. I hope they've not boguht the same model from elsewhere without multi-region.

Hmph.
