HELP! BROKEN VIDEO CAMERA PROBLEM!

I have a Canon GL-1 and I think it was left pointed at the sun accidentally (!!!) ... I am pretty sure the CCD is burned out. Is this fixable? I hope so ... *sad*

This is so terrible. Am I fucked? I am pretty sure that this is going to cost me a pretty penny to fix. Ugh. *despair*

What do you see when you try to shoot something?

That is a v. nice camera to have damaged, but I'm sure you know that.

the icebox (nordicskilla), Monday, 19 January 2004 10:10 (twenty-two years ago)

What an understatement! Yeah, it's going to be an expensive problem. Ummm .. the picture looks as if the iris is barely open, incredibly dark ... I have to point it towards a lmap to even get it to show any image at all, and when it does it is merely a lightbulb surrounded by darkness. I have tired messing with the exposure and to no avail. I played an old tape in VCR mode, so I know it is not a problem with the LCD, unfortunately, as that might be less expensive if fixable.

Can you fix the camera by replacing the CCD? I am assuming that this is the most expensive part of the camera, which saddens me unbelivably...

If it is a dead pixel problem, all of the CCDs can be replaced for apparently the equivalent of $600-700. I'd get it looked at if I were you.

Can any large camera repair shop fix it or is something I would have to go to Canon for? are the CCDs Canon specific or do they all operate off the same chips? thanks for your help so far, by the wya

helpless, Monday, 19 January 2004 10:31 (twenty-two years ago)

I don't know the answer to either of those questions, I'm sorry.

I would definitely take it to a large repair shop first, though.

the icebox (nordicskilla), Monday, 19 January 2004 10:33 (twenty-two years ago)

However, I would think that it would take a lot to burn out ALL of the pixels this way. More likely you would get a mark or a "smear" of some kind.

How exactly did you end up doing this, anyway? Don't answer if you don't want to, I just hope it was in the name of some serious "art".

the icebox (nordicskilla), Monday, 19 January 2004 10:35 (twenty-two years ago)

I don't know really, it was set on a bag for a minute or so while the sun was out and then used again. It worked fine afterwards and then again a day later but it has been a week and a half since then and now when I turned it on it stuttered for a second, so I replaced the battery and it finally turned on, except now with the problem. It might be something else but as far as I can diagnose it seems like a burnt out ccd or like you said, a large number of dead pixels.

I found an estimate on a newsgroup from someone who had dealt with Canon about this type of thing before - $811, it seems. Not terribly great news but better than replacing the camera completely I guess.

Breaking expensive electronics is like having a pet die. Hope it works out, that sucks.

Yes I get more attached to electronics sadly.

So I took it to a camera shop and they basically said that it probably wasn't the CCDs because if it was there should not be any picture at all or that the picture should be clearly damaged instead of just really dark which may mean that it is one of the less expensive parts which is good news for my wallet. We'll see about that after I send it to Canon.

If the GL-1 is a 3-CCD camera, the likelyhood of all the chips blowing is pretty low, esp in this day and age. Sounds like you have a melted iris or something similar. Lens focuses light, sun is very bright, mistakes are made.

ModJ (ModJ), Monday, 19 January 2004 23:38 (twenty-two years ago)

I would assume that the iris would be the cheapest part of a GL-1 to replace then and maybe pretty inexpensive as well. The GL1 is a 3 CCD camera also.

Cheapest part of any camera is the shell... everything else involves invasive surgery...

one year passes...
Inspired by Classic or Dud: Trying to get back in touch with someone you had a crush on ten years ago. Even though it's probably an awful idea. For god' sake, someone stop me. , I thought I'd bump this thread to reveal that I was in fact "helpless" who started this thread.

A WINNER IS YOU

It ended up costing me about $400. Canon fixed the camera and returned it to me in about two weeks.

i felt bad for you!

s1ocki (slutsky), Thursday, 28 July 2005 19:45 (twenty years ago)

I was absolutely miserable. I noticed it right as I was going to bed that night and ended up spending the early morning trying to figure out what the problem could be, unable to actually do anything to correct it.

I am mainly bumping this thread for Adam. I think he would appreciate it.
