Best one-on-one fighting computer game of this modern era of computer gaming (and which one should i buy?)

i feel i have totally lost touch with new computer games - what is the "big" beat 'em up now? The Street Fighter II of the mordern age?

The last I remember was Tekken 3. Is Tekken 4 still the biggest? I want to get a decent one for my PS2.. what should I buy??? and I have now got a multitap with loads of controllers and so 4 player capability would be good (there was like a Tekken TAG thing?) Soul Calibre was quite fun.

Although I can't enjoy other games with weapons quite as much now after Bushido Blade. I've heard BB2 was shite though (never played it)

ken c (ken c), Monday, 19 January 2004 12:47 (twenty-two years ago)

I prefer Tekken Tag myself, although Tekken 4 for obvious reasons.
I thought Bushido Blade was dire.

Pinkpanther (Pinkpanther), Monday, 19 January 2004 12:50 (twenty-two years ago)

the last one i played was Tekken 3 too which i thought was great - always found the Streetfighter series over-rated. ken also otm re Soul Calibre.

i think i'd still rather play IK+ on turbo speed tho

Soul Calibur 2 is the winner. None of the three-dee fighters have four-player mode (or none that you'd want to play).

Kengo: Master of Bushido is sort of Bushido Blade 3, but not as good, I hear. Life bars, to start with.

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Monday, 19 January 2004 12:57 (twenty-two years ago)

Tekken is my personal favorite, the fourth edition being the one i played last. The fact that you can get King to pull off all of Bret Hart's "Five Moves of Doom" makes it that much more perfect: Scorpion Deathlock, Russian Legsweep, Running piledriver, atomic drop, and backbreaker.

Also, Tekken 4 has Julia Chang, who is my new Video Game Wife.

Yie Ar Kung Fu

the icebox (nordicskilla), Monday, 19 January 2004 13:11 (twenty-two years ago)

oops, that should be running bulldog, not running piledriver.

altho, if memory serves, King does two diferrent piledrivers, and a Giant Swing!

Kingfishee (Kingfish), Monday, 19 January 2004 13:14 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah Soul Calibur 2 = teh roxx0r!

Sarah (starry), Monday, 19 January 2004 13:19 (twenty-two years ago)

It's all about Soul Calibur my man. I never really cared about computer games since I weaned myself off Perfect Dark, but this is something else. Amazing cast of characters with good variation of characteristics, strengths and weaknesses, a seriously amazing array of moves ranging from the easy one-two's to spectacular near-impossible combinations, a weapon master mode where you can play to win weapons for multiplayer, giving your character a significant edge, perfect scrolling and detail, smooth, seductive, you don't get any of that fluke win shit if a novice picks up the pad, basically if you put the hours in, you reap the rewards. It is, quite simply, everything you want in a fighting game. I play as Lord Nightmare - now who fucking wants a piece of me?

@lex K (Alex K), Monday, 19 January 2004 13:19 (twenty-two years ago)

Whatever you do, don't get Virtua Fighter 4 (or whatever the number is). I hired it from the video shop, even though I don't particularly like fighting games, and, seriously, haven't played one properly since Exploding Fist. Anyway, I started playing and, even though I didn't know what I was doing, won about 20 fights in a row. When I eventually lost it was only cos I got a bit bored, and also the woman I was fighting was quite sexy.

Eyeball Kicks (Eyeball Kicks), Monday, 19 January 2004 13:39 (twenty-two years ago)

SOUL CALIBUR (2? I haven't played it yet but 1 is DA BOMB)

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 19 January 2004 17:17 (twenty-two years ago)

I vote for the soul calibur 2

A Nairn (moretap), Monday, 19 January 2004 17:32 (twenty-two years ago)

Soul Calibur 2 - Voldo is the coolest videogame character ever.

latebloomer (latebloomer), Monday, 19 January 2004 21:53 (twenty-two years ago)

Soul Calibur 2 is largely the same bomb, but looks a lot better.

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Monday, 19 January 2004 22:20 (twenty-two years ago)

Soul Calibur 2. Cannot be said enough times: that game is the shiznit.

cis (cis), Monday, 19 January 2004 22:28 (twenty-two years ago)

i detest it.

tom west (thomp), Monday, 19 January 2004 22:36 (twenty-two years ago)

but i think i've hated all the namco 3D fighters, so if you didn't hate tekken you might well not hate soul calibur. the character designs etc. are still shit-ugly, though

tom west (thomp), Monday, 19 January 2004 22:38 (twenty-two years ago)

that one on the dreamcast had a good four player 3d fighting - yeh that's it: power stone! see also: power stone 2 and super smash bros. gc. good fun. pretty hectic.

cozen (Cozen), Monday, 19 January 2004 22:47 (twenty-two years ago)

Super Smash Bros. Melee is as good as Soul Caliber 2 and has four-player mode. But sadly you don't have a Gamecube so you cannot play it.

fortunate hazel (f. hazel), Monday, 19 January 2004 22:47 (twenty-two years ago)

Power Stone 2 and Super Smash Brothers are more party games than actual fighters, aren't they?

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Monday, 19 January 2004 22:49 (twenty-two years ago)

All this fancy 3D! This is the interweb, things only exist in 2D!

Leee Majors (Leee), Monday, 19 January 2004 22:54 (twenty-two years ago)

Dude, just stick to Street Fighter II on SNES.

(btw I remember quite liking Bushido Blade, but only when playing with friends)

Jordan (Jordan), Monday, 19 January 2004 23:05 (twenty-two years ago)

KNOCKOUT KINGS!!!

ModJ (ModJ), Monday, 19 January 2004 23:05 (twenty-two years ago)

Tekken 4 sounds like the way to go then - i might see if i can find a second hand copy somewhere dead cheap otherwise it's 30 quid for 2 games at a shop in camden...

I played soul calibre at my ex-flatmate's place the other day it really was fun - esp on elimination mode - however there are a couple of characters on there who have SCUMMY MOVES that almost makes it impossible to lose when you're them - e.g. that really camp bloke with a sabre who has this forward attack that can carry on FOREVER without you getting a move in, and the bloke with a big stick with a knife on the end, and the girl with a big stick, they both have this move where they poke you five times from 1000 miles away!!

I might wait til payday though - cos WWE SMACKDOWN HERE COMES THE PAIN has been occupying most of my freetime anyway. KEN C the custom-made new wrestling superstar reduced The Big Show to a heap of blood with a steel chair the other day, ooh that felt good. Almost as good as pedigreeing Triple H.

ken c (ken c), Monday, 19 January 2004 23:43 (twenty-two years ago)

"a big stick with a knife on the end" = a naginata

ken c (ken c), Monday, 19 January 2004 23:46 (twenty-two years ago)

Ken one of the best things about Calibur II is the guard break where you can not only block an opponents attack but if you hit it right you can break their attack and throw them off balance, lining them up for you to smash them about a bit at leisure. Even if you miss the break, just block those badgers use a quick counter as soon as their attack is over. Also, you can sidestep such attacks with ease and every character has evasion moves which can be turned into attacks.

@lex K (Alex K), Tuesday, 20 January 2004 09:56 (twenty-two years ago)

I love knockout kings!

Pinkpanther (Pinkpanther), Tuesday, 20 January 2004 12:48 (twenty-two years ago)

If you're going to go 2D, it's a dead-heat between Darkstalkers 2: Night Warriors (largely because that game has the best character design of any fighting game ever) and Capcom vs SNK 2.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 20 January 2004 15:13 (twenty-two years ago)

I always liked Marvel vs. Street Fighter on the PS1 because I could skule EVERYBODY (except for ultra cheep Mecha Akuma) using Dhalsim!

Leee Majors (Leee), Tuesday, 20 January 2004 19:25 (twenty-two years ago)

one year passes...
EA fight night 2005.

... and soul calibur 2.

teeth montrose (Cozen), Monday, 6 June 2005 19:03 (twenty-one years ago)

Since this thread was last revived, I have purchased and played Soul Calibur 2.

Soul Calibur 2.

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 6 June 2005 19:28 (twenty-one years ago)

I am just learning how to play it. I need to read a good guide but ign are charging for theirs.

teeth montrose (Cozen), Monday, 6 June 2005 21:21 (twenty-one years ago)

ea fight night?

I played Knockout Kings before, it was the most brutal and violent computer game I've ever seen, it took about an hour for someone to win, an hour of two boxers socking the absolute shit out of each other, and no blocking. hardcore.

Ronan (Ronan), Monday, 6 June 2005 21:25 (twenty-one years ago)

I don't play no games that require no reading of no MANUAL!!!

From Zero To Drunk In Twenty Dollars (nordicskilla), Monday, 6 June 2005 21:26 (twenty-one years ago)

I have never been drawn to fighting games.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Monday, 6 June 2005 21:27 (twenty-one years ago)

sorry, it's actually called EA fight night round 2.

teeth montrose (Cozen), Monday, 6 June 2005 21:28 (twenty-one years ago)

So this Soul Calibur 2... it's good, eh?

Forksclovetofu (Forksclovetofu), Monday, 6 June 2005 21:36 (twenty-one years ago)

Yah but you need to read stuff to learn how to play.

Button-mashing alone will not suffice.

From Zero To Drunk In Twenty Dollars (nordicskilla), Monday, 6 June 2005 21:38 (twenty-one years ago)

Not strictly true; button-mashing will get you past the computer in a heartbeat. Someone who really knows how to play will take you apart, though.

Also, thanks to the in-game training mode, you don't really have to read the manual.

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Monday, 6 June 2005 22:00 (twenty-one years ago)

I heard Tobal was the bomb but I never played it!

Dead Or Alive is great if you like wankingdetailed body physics.

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 6 June 2005 22:01 (twenty-one years ago)

I liked Tobal 1 more than 2 (even though all the cognoscenti said 2 was easily better) because it gave you a slow-mo replay of your knockout blow every time.. in 2, however, you got to play as a giant chicken.

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Monday, 6 June 2005 22:09 (twenty-one years ago)

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Monday, 6 June 2005 22:09 (twenty-one years ago)

=o

Beautiful!

From Zero To Drunk In Twenty Dollars (nordicskilla), Monday, 6 June 2005 22:10 (twenty-one years ago)

It never came out in America, though. You had to have a modified Playstation, and then find a place that would sell you the Japanese version.

Dan, I really liked the "reverse" moves in Dead or Alive. That's something Tobal had a bit of, but it wasn't nearly as dramatic.

VIDEO GAMEZ

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Monday, 6 June 2005 22:15 (twenty-one years ago)

Replays are so important and satisfying, they can redeem many a bad game!

From Zero To Drunk In Twenty Dollars (nordicskilla), Monday, 6 June 2005 22:17 (twenty-one years ago)

Fight Night Round 2 is where its at, even if the computer throws haymakers like crazy. Lean back Naz style, counter to the body and head.

Alan Conceicao (Alan Conceicao), Monday, 6 June 2005 22:30 (twenty-one years ago)

Tekken 5 isn't out in Europe until later in the month :(

There were some coin operated PS2s in the hostel I was staying in in New York, and I put considerable quarters into T5 there. It's back to being good, after a remarkably ropey fourth installment (is the word installment in this sense only ever used in reviews?)

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Monday, 6 June 2005 22:51 (twenty-one years ago)

all 2-D fighters are better then the 3-D ones. Iori Yagami is way cooler flat-beated.

Nobuo Uematsu, Tuesday, 7 June 2005 10:59 (twenty-one years ago)

does soul calibur 2 still have that gay guy with a sword? you can totally win with him by button bashing. that trick when you press the attack button 3 times he'd just bash his sword repeatedly killing everything in the way.

i played it with roxymuzak once and she kept losing to that move!

ken c (ken c), Tuesday, 7 June 2005 11:02 (twenty-one years ago)

I add my vote for Soul Calibur 2, if only for "it was a time of legends" in appropriate deep gruff voice.

Ste (Fuzzy), Tuesday, 7 June 2005 11:06 (twenty-one years ago)
