This has been bugging me all weekend. Mainly because the art work (striking image of a suicide bomber floating on a pool of blood) was far from 'glorifying' suicide bombers. It seems to be a highly ambiguous piece of art. Very provocative, somewhat disturbing, but glorifying. All the more galling because most of the coverage I've seen has not sought look at the art work beyond the flying rhetoric.

yes, for sure, it totally bugs me too and I think the ambassador was completely out of line. that said, I think your thread title could perhaps benefit from a little re-thinking.

I can see why the ambassador might have been offended by the art work, but I did think it was a bit much for him to barrel into it and then call on the Swedish government to ban it. People do not have a right not to be offended.

I guess having millions of people subjugated and murdered over the aeons leaves one with a feeling of entitlement.

ModJ (ModJ), Monday, 19 January 2004 18:40 (twenty-two years ago)

sure we Irish know about subjugation.

DV (dirtyvicar), Monday, 19 January 2004 19:23 (twenty-two years ago)

i think throwing a spotlight at the things was a bit over the line. kind of a childish way to voice his objections.

unless it was performance art.

I think that if you're gonna get mad about anti-semitic art, you should make sure the art wasn't made by an Israeli.

Not all Israelis are Jewish. Haaretz had a good piece on the incident.

esoj's pun = most offensive thing on thread.

And that's true, bnw, but I'm sure Dror Feiler is Jewish.

sym (shmuel), Tuesday, 20 January 2004 06:59 (twenty-two years ago)

one of the many funny things about this incident is that hardly anyone in the world would have heard of this artwork if it hadn't been for the ambassador's undiplomatic tantrum.

the other funny thing about the whole thing is the way the Israeli government seemed to be suggesting that the Swedish state should ban this art exhibition, on the basis that it is inciting terrorism. If Swedes or fans of conceptual art were always heading into Tel Aviv discotheques with belts of high-explosive then they might have a case, but as is it just sounds like censorship for its own sake.

DV (dirtyvicar), Monday, 26 January 2004 23:59 (twenty-two years ago)

DV OTM. The modern art world really isn't the top threat to Israel right around now.

sym (shmuel), Tuesday, 27 January 2004 00:05 (twenty-two years ago)

are these stories just pumped up by the media as a way of getting a human interest angle on armed struggle?

Sébastien Chikara (Sébastien Chikara), Tuesday, 27 January 2004 01:59 (twenty-two years ago)

maybe Momus could do a parallel world thread in which the Art world IS a threat to the survival of Israel.

DV (dirtyvicar), Tuesday, 27 January 2004 10:45 (twenty-two years ago)

makes a change from saying that Jews are controlling the culture!
