last night on the bus home a guy was talking to his friend over the phone and he got everyone on the upper deck to say hello to this guy. It was quite funny - I think everyone said 'hello' except the young black guy next to me who reluctantly muttered an 'aight' of sorts and me with my dry, sarcastic 'yo' - i went a bit red in the face immediately afterwards, ho ho

Actually, Edison invented it. Bell wanted to use the greeting, "Ahoy ahoy" (which, you'll notice, is how Mr. Burns answers the phone) -- but that never quite took off. < /even more of a pedant>
