well, hello, Mr. Fancypants...

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Tuesday, 20 January 2004 03:31 (twenty-two years ago)

There was a reason behind this thread, I think. Erm...

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 20 January 2004 04:06 (twenty-two years ago)

I think if a stranger says, "Hello" they mean "I WANT TO BE YOUR FRIEND."

Ian Johnson (orion), Tuesday, 20 January 2004 04:10 (twenty-two years ago)

And how does this compare to the more casual "hi"?

JuliaA (j_bdules), Tuesday, 20 January 2004 04:19 (twenty-two years ago)

it all depends on the manner in which the greeting was delivered.

Ian Johnson (orion), Tuesday, 20 January 2004 04:41 (twenty-two years ago)

helllllllOOOoooooo.....

"Hullo."

Aaron A., Tuesday, 20 January 2004 04:55 (twenty-two years ago)

last night on the bus home a guy was talking to his friend over the phone and he got everyone on the upper deck to say hello to this guy. It was quite funny - I think everyone said 'hello' except the young black guy next to me who reluctantly muttered an 'aight' of sorts and me with my dry, sarcastic 'yo' - i went a bit red in the face immediately afterwards, ho ho

Jim O'Rourke has a tune called, "There's Hell in Hello But More in Goodbye."

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 20 January 2004 15:10 (twenty-two years ago)

I thought it was "NONE in goodbye"??

Andrew L (Andrew L), Tuesday, 20 January 2004 15:37 (twenty-two years ago)

I've been alone with you inside my mind
And in my dreams I've kissed your lips a thousand times
I sometimes see you pass outside my door

Hello, is it me you're looking for?
I can see it in your eyes, I can see it in your smile
You're all I've ever wanted and my arms are open wide
'Cause you know just what to say and you know just what to do
And I want to tell you so much, I love you

I long to see the sunlight in your hair
And tell you time and time again, how much I care
Sometimes I feel my heart will overflow

Hello, I've just got to let you know
'Cause I wonder where you are and I wonder what you do
Are you somewhere feeling lonely or is someone loving you?
Tell me how to win your heart for I haven't got a clue
But let me start by saying, I love you

Of course you all know "hello" is an artificial word created by Alexander Graham Bell as a telephone greeting, don't you? I thought not.

Of course you all know "hello" is an artificial word created by Alexander Graham Bell as a telephone greeting, don't you?

Actually, Edison invented it. Bell wanted to use the greeting, "Ahoy ahoy" (which, you'll notice, is how Mr. Burns answers the phone) -- but that never quite took off. < /even more of a pedant>
