Crisps: Reconstituted vs Sliced

In the red corned, reconstituted potato snacks like McCoys, Seabrooks, Squares, Pringles etc.

In the Blue corner, proper crisps such as Walkers, Kettle, supermarket own brands, Golden Wonder etc.

Ed (dali), Tuesday, 20 January 2004 16:06 (twenty-two years ago)

There is only one answer: fucking sliced! Always Kettle chips.

Enrique (Enrique), Tuesday, 20 January 2004 16:08 (twenty-two years ago)

oooh tough one to call, walkers are great, apart from their animal rennet thingy. Then there's pringles on the other side which are fab. Hmmmm tough one. right it's definitely gotta be, erm no wait, hang on... I can't decide, it's too hard. *head explodes*

Pinkpanther (Pinkpanther), Tuesday, 20 January 2004 16:13 (twenty-two years ago)

Walkers ownz. (esp "sensations" thai sweet chilli flav.)

I tried kettle chips a coupla times, but they were v oily

reconstituted = bleargh.

Pashmina (Pashmina), Tuesday, 20 January 2004 16:13 (twenty-two years ago)

That chilli roxxxx. Marks and Spencers posh crisps have it going on.

Enrique (Enrique), Tuesday, 20 January 2004 16:14 (twenty-two years ago)

kettle chips hurt my mouth, give me walkers anyday...

ed are you sure mccoys are reconstituted? i'm sure i've had eyes/bits of skin/purple bits etc in them...

i think it's the flavouring that sways me more, eg seabrooks flavouring top notch in comparison to most sliced crisps except walkers posh ones...

CarsmileSteve (CarsmileSteve), Tuesday, 20 January 2004 16:15 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah but I've never had MSG overload from garlic and herb flavour Seabrooks whereas Posh lamb and mint is now a forbidden land to me after a particular incident when I er, may have eaten an entire large bag of the stuff...

Seabrooks = KING OF CRISPS, followed by Squares, followed by Walkers, salt and shake, Pret vegetable crisps and Sainsers Economy.

Sarah (starry), Tuesday, 20 January 2004 16:19 (twenty-two years ago)

Seabrooks are marvellous crisps and its a shame you can only really get them in a few pubs. Plus you can eat 75 packets of them without feeling full.

I've got to go for 'proper' though. McCoys strike me as being too chunky to be reconstituted. Squares win on texture alone.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Tuesday, 20 January 2004 16:21 (twenty-two years ago)

carsmile otm, Personally it doesn't matter to me whether they are reconstituted or not, it's the taste that counts. I'd rather have a good bag of reconstituted frazzles than a bag of overcooked sliced crisps.

In fact, from the shortlist produced by Ed I'd rather have the reconsituted, as I love square crisps

Vicky (Vicky), Tuesday, 20 January 2004 16:23 (twenty-two years ago)

I might have got the McCOys wrong there, aren't they like seabrook's though, ruffled.

Trad sliced for me although salt and vinegar squares are damn fine crisps.

Ed (dali), Tuesday, 20 January 2004 16:29 (twenty-two years ago)

The ingredients list on 'reconstituted' crisps tends to start with sthg like 'dried potato', 'dehydrated potato' or 'potato powder'. On packets of 'sliced' crisps it starts with 'potatoes'.

McCoys (a bag of which I have just started, you bastards) falls into the latter category.

Mooro (Mooro), Tuesday, 20 January 2004 16:31 (twenty-two years ago)

I had some T-bone steak flavoured Roysters today, I'd forgotten just how hard they RoXored.

(it could be though that they were my first packet of crisps in about two weeks)

I didn't think McKoys were re-constituted either.

really though it's the old instant vs proper coffee, or choccy bars vs 98% cocoa solid chocolate arguement isn't it? You have what you fancy, sometimes you want to be posh, sometimes, sod it, have a frazzle.

chris (chris), Tuesday, 20 January 2004 16:31 (twenty-two years ago)

Or a Spicy Nik Nak.

Mooro (Mooro), Tuesday, 20 January 2004 16:32 (twenty-two years ago)

i bemoan the demise of the Frisp

stevem (blueski), Tuesday, 20 January 2004 16:33 (twenty-two years ago)

Wrong on the mcCoys thing then, so long since I've had them. I'm sure at one point they were reconstituted. What ever happened to roast beef and mustard flavoured brannigans. They were a damned fine crisp.

Chris, even i want a scampi fry sometimes.

Ed (dali), Tuesday, 20 January 2004 16:34 (twenty-two years ago)

Worst crisp ever? Scampi and lemon nik naks.

pete s, Tuesday, 20 January 2004 16:36 (twenty-two years ago)

Brannigans were great crisps, can you still get them or did Posh Walkers kind of knock them out?

Matt DC (Matt DC), Tuesday, 20 January 2004 16:37 (twenty-two years ago)

Brannigans still exist, they have them in The One Tun - the Ham & Pickle flavour is superior tho...

stevem (blueski), Tuesday, 20 January 2004 16:37 (twenty-two years ago)

One Tun FAP next Tuesday!

stevem (blueski), Tuesday, 20 January 2004 16:38 (twenty-two years ago)

I don't really like the posh walkers, I think they're too overpowering. With proper crisps less is more, in my opinion. Aren't some of them reconsituted anyway? Aren't there chinese rib flavour, or are I mixing up my crisps?

Vicky (Vicky), Tuesday, 20 January 2004 16:39 (twenty-two years ago)

me too Ed, although I'd rather have the pribce of pub snacks - the bacon fry

Vic - there were a limited edition spare rib sauce walkers which were a bit meh, but the crackers with the same flavour were fantastic.

chris (chris), Tuesday, 20 January 2004 16:40 (twenty-two years ago)

..walkers chinese spare rib flavour

i enjoy marks & spencer crinkle cut - salt & vinegar flavour

DJ Martian (djmartian), Tuesday, 20 January 2004 16:43 (twenty-two years ago)

i have to get small children to go into newsagents and get me some Pickled Onion Monster Munch. in return i buy them beer.

stevem (blueski), Tuesday, 20 January 2004 16:43 (twenty-two years ago)

mmm, picked onion space invaders too, with the additional bonus of being very very cheap!

Vicky (Vicky), Tuesday, 20 January 2004 16:45 (twenty-two years ago)

Space Raiders always taste slightly stale and soggy though, for no apparent reason.

I'm sure Monster Munch have gotten smaller since I was a boy - and no that's NOT JUST ME GETTING BIGGER!

Matt DC (Matt DC), Tuesday, 20 January 2004 16:46 (twenty-two years ago)

They're not stale when you buy them in a box at Costco though! (Actually, we didn't manage to finish them all before they met their sell by date, and we ended up chucking a few packets out)

Vicky (Vicky), Tuesday, 20 January 2004 16:49 (twenty-two years ago)

yeah, down my gullet you feeder

chris (chris), Tuesday, 20 January 2004 16:54 (twenty-two years ago)

I would go for sliced (Thai sweet chilli = my nemesis argh) but I could never relinquish salt n vinegar crunchy sticks or pickled onion monster munch. I only have the latter very rarely now (most antisocial crisp ever) but they still remind me in a downright Proustian way of coming out of swimming on a Saturday morning and being allowed a vending machine treat.

Archel (Archel), Tuesday, 20 January 2004 17:01 (twenty-two years ago)

I like cheese n sodding onion. Or did till I got a girlfriend.

Enrique (Enrique), Tuesday, 20 January 2004 17:04 (twenty-two years ago)

My VMT was always a bar of Caramac. Caramac and chlorine, that's my sense memory of swimming.

Pete (Pete), Tuesday, 20 January 2004 17:05 (twenty-two years ago)

Me too Enrique, me too :(

Archel (Archel), Tuesday, 20 January 2004 17:07 (twenty-two years ago)

i don't think i've ever encountered seabrooks crisps. should i remedy this?

toby (tsg20), Tuesday, 20 January 2004 17:12 (twenty-two years ago)

Immediately, young man! Didn't you have any at the Head of Steam on the pub crawl?

Sarah (starry), Tuesday, 20 January 2004 17:13 (twenty-two years ago)

oh yes almost certainly. so change "i've never encountered them" to "i remember some crisps in the head of steam and i think they had garlic in them and they were nice but i'm not sure cos i was far too drunk by then".

toby (tsg20), Tuesday, 20 January 2004 17:18 (twenty-two years ago)

ah yeh i remember the garlic crisps - they were a bit stale tho i think

stevem (blueski), Tuesday, 20 January 2004 17:21 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm glad to see that I'm not thee only thai sweet chilli crisp addict.

Pashmina (Pashmina), Tuesday, 20 January 2004 17:47 (twenty-two years ago)

I like spicy bikers the best, and seabrooks are wierd because they have sweetcorn flavour. The unsettling thing being they actually taste like sweetcorn. All 10p crisps are the best even the 20p 10p crisps. I think black pepper kettle chips are the best when cost is not a consideration.

see ar (see ar), Tuesday, 20 January 2004 19:14 (twenty-two years ago)

Give this man a newspaper column!

N. (nickdastoor), Tuesday, 20 January 2004 19:22 (twenty-two years ago)

I'd say pita chips these days.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 20 January 2004 19:27 (twenty-two years ago)

Also the important question; are people from preston weaned on seabrook's crisps?

Ed (dali), Tuesday, 20 January 2004 19:33 (twenty-two years ago)

in general sliced, although pringles are so good - especially when consumed from the minibar at 3am while lying on a gigantic hotel bed.

lauren (laurenp), Tuesday, 20 January 2004 20:03 (twenty-two years ago)

Recons? Ugh. Have to be in the mood (read: hungover).

KETTLE KETTLE KETTLE KETTLE DEEP FRIED YUMMY GOODNESS, MMMMMMMM!!!

the river fleet, Tuesday, 20 January 2004 21:57 (twenty-two years ago)

I miss Ringos. "No Ringo Goes Like A Ringo Goes!" The prawn cocktail flavour was nice.

Also those funny horizontal bags of chipsticks, only they were called "Chipshop Fries" or some name like that - the bag had a fake newspaper design and came in two flavours - a particuarly gorgeous bacon flavour and an incredibly sharp salt and vinegar (I preferred the bacon flavour, tho I did like the salt and vinegar version it was so vinegary it made my eyes water).

Chriddof (Chriddof), Wednesday, 21 January 2004 01:54 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh, yeah, reconsitituted or sliced... er, as someone else said, it depends on what you fancy at the time. I don't think either one is better than the other.

Chriddof (Chriddof), Wednesday, 21 January 2004 01:56 (twenty-two years ago)

i accidentally ate a whole bag of kettle chips (salt and vinegar flavor) last night. woke up with a tummy ache.

generally, i like plain things like walkers or whatever brand. i grew up on ruffles, and that's my vote

colette (a2lette), Wednesday, 21 January 2004 12:59 (twenty-two years ago)

I loved cheese & onion until they started using animal rennet for the cheese flavour. Bah bumhug!

Pinkpanther (Pinkpanther), Wednesday, 21 January 2004 13:04 (twenty-two years ago)

Isn't it strange how when you're doing a lot of drugs you shy away from eating sharp, crunchy food (Kettle Chips are like kryptonite)? Then when you 'get healthy' you start eating them again? It's so cool how I'll never be completely healthy.

Le Coq (DarrenK), Wednesday, 21 January 2004 13:13 (twenty-two years ago)

I've eaten so many bags of Miss Vickie's Sweet Sour Cream and Chili chips this month my tears reek of the seasoning. And stop saying "crisps" you confusing assholes!

Le Coq (DarrenK), Wednesday, 21 January 2004 13:15 (twenty-two years ago)

I loved cheese & onion until they started using animal rennet for the cheese flavour.

WTF???!!!

Re: Kettle sharpness. Every rose has its thorn.

Enrique (Enrique), Wednesday, 21 January 2004 13:18 (twenty-two years ago)

This is an English started thread so it's crisps. Chips=hot potato/french fries.

Unfortunately it is Kettle chips, but they are still crisps god damnit!

Pinkpanther (Pinkpanther), Wednesday, 21 January 2004 13:19 (twenty-two years ago)

Yep! Check most supermarket own brands, all walkers cheese flavour (apart from wotsits) all doritos except lime & salted. Oh & cheese & onion McCoys.

Pinkpanther (Pinkpanther), Wednesday, 21 January 2004 13:20 (twenty-two years ago)

Small point or order: real actual chips != french fries :)

your chip pedant for the day (starry), Wednesday, 21 January 2004 13:21 (twenty-two years ago)

er, isn't that what I said?

Pinkpanther (Pinkpanther), Wednesday, 21 January 2004 13:23 (twenty-two years ago)

mmmm those lime flavoured doritos are gorgeous

chris (chris), Wednesday, 21 January 2004 13:40 (twenty-two years ago)

yup! they are indeed mighty fine! mmmmmmmm

Pinkpanther (Pinkpanther), Wednesday, 21 January 2004 13:40 (twenty-two years ago)

er, isn't that what I said?

er, no. Starry is making a distinction between (British) chips and french fries.

N. (nickdastoor), Wednesday, 21 January 2004 14:45 (twenty-two years ago)

hot potato/french fries. I thought I made the same point, but whatever.

Pinkpanther (Pinkpanther), Wednesday, 21 January 2004 15:01 (twenty-two years ago)

Sorry that sounded arsey, it was intended that way!

Pinkpanther (Pinkpanther), Wednesday, 21 January 2004 15:05 (twenty-two years ago)

I am another Thai Sweet Chili flavour addict.

Brannigans were better when they had those thick, silvered-paper packets. I know this makes absolutely no difference to the flavour; but I still preferred them.

Dud: putting several proper crisps in your mouth, some ending up the wrong way up, and them digging painfully into your gums when you close your mouth. Yes, I am a messy greedy eater.

caitlin (caitlin), Wednesday, 21 January 2004 16:22 (twenty-two years ago)

Ouch, a crisp going into your gums is the worst pain!

Pinkpanther (Pinkpanther), Wednesday, 21 January 2004 16:25 (twenty-two years ago)

new potato crisp on the block...hula hoops - bacon & ketchup flavour

DJ Martian (djmartian), Wednesday, 21 January 2004 18:09 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm sorry I put my oar in now.

N. (nickdastoor), Wednesday, 21 January 2004 22:10 (twenty-two years ago)
