What strange or even stupid things did you first think upon encountering ILX?

Mine were mostly about certain posters I guess.

Obviously I thought jess was a girl. I, ummmm, also thought Alex In NYC was about 15.

the Eskibox (nordicskilla), Tuesday, 20 January 2004 23:18 (twenty-two years ago)

i thought i might be able to make a positive contribution

the surface noise (electricsound), Tuesday, 20 January 2004 23:18 (twenty-two years ago)

bbbbbut you have!

the Eskibox (nordicskilla), Tuesday, 20 January 2004 23:20 (twenty-two years ago)

Alex in NYC is younger than 15?

omg, Tuesday, 20 January 2004 23:20 (twenty-two years ago)

I thought it was a smart and friendly place.

El Diablo Robotico (Nicole), Tuesday, 20 January 2004 23:20 (twenty-two years ago)

I detected a faint smell of wee.

Patrick Kinghorn, Tuesday, 20 January 2004 23:21 (twenty-two years ago)

i thought i could make you all my concubines.

t\'\'t (t\'\'t), Tuesday, 20 January 2004 23:23 (twenty-two years ago)

My first thought was "OMIGOD, DG HAS LOST HIS MIND!!!" Then I thought about xeroxing my ass. I blame Ally.

the river fleet, Tuesday, 20 January 2004 23:24 (twenty-two years ago)

b-b-but di, that is neither strange nor stupid! i'd join your harem for a bag of pitted dates!

petra jane (petra jane), Tuesday, 20 January 2004 23:27 (twenty-two years ago)

I was thinking, "Hey, that works."

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 20 January 2004 23:29 (twenty-two years ago)

I came to ILM first, via my old friend Andrew L. I wasn't hooked immediately, but it didn't take long, and once I moved onto ILE I felt at home very quickly. The people here rather reminded me of my old friends, and I thought I'd like a lot of them. It was all correct.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Tuesday, 20 January 2004 23:30 (twenty-two years ago)

*cackles maniacally* (xpost)

The Lady Ms Lurex (lucylurex), Tuesday, 20 January 2004 23:30 (twenty-two years ago)

'is jess a girl and jody a guy?', gareth and graham posts mixed up all the time, Tom Ewing as unapproachable pop behemoth, Matt DC posts here so it MUST be good, what's with this Ronan dude?...

stevem (blueski), Tuesday, 20 January 2004 23:35 (twenty-two years ago)

hahaha mixing up gareth and graham is like accidentally sugaring your food and salting your coffee

the surface noise (electricsound), Tuesday, 20 January 2004 23:37 (twenty-two years ago)

Tom Ewing as unapproachable pop behemoth

Indeed.

the Eskibox (nordicskilla), Tuesday, 20 January 2004 23:37 (twenty-two years ago)

I mixed up all the Marks.

the Eskibox (nordicskilla), Tuesday, 20 January 2004 23:38 (twenty-two years ago)

jess IS a girl, isn't he?

mullygrubber (gaz), Tuesday, 20 January 2004 23:40 (twenty-two years ago)

What's with this masturbation obsession?

Hmmm, Tuesday, 20 January 2004 23:41 (twenty-two years ago)

i thought o my god there are people talking smartly and wittily about music i like.

how wrong first impressions can be.

mullygrubber (gaz), Tuesday, 20 January 2004 23:42 (twenty-two years ago)

Because in fact there was only me. Oh wait.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 20 January 2004 23:42 (twenty-two years ago)

jess IS a girl, isn't he?

Well, he's a "girl". That's different.

the Eskibox (nordicskilla), Tuesday, 20 January 2004 23:42 (twenty-two years ago)

I don't remember what I thought BEFORE

andrew m. (andrewmorgan), Tuesday, 20 January 2004 23:43 (twenty-two years ago)

my first impressions were all correct. i attribute the fact that i've stuck around so long to my own psychological weakness and gluttony for punishment.

bent fabric (Jody Beth Rosen), Tuesday, 20 January 2004 23:44 (twenty-two years ago)

Especially since you thought my arguments were sweetly phrased and charming! ;-)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 20 January 2004 23:45 (twenty-two years ago)

I also confused geeta and gygax! and Dr C and Dave Q. I guess I just wasn't very bright.

the Eskibox (nordicskilla), Tuesday, 20 January 2004 23:47 (twenty-two years ago)

haha "wasn't"

the Eskibox (nordicskilla), Tuesday, 20 January 2004 23:47 (twenty-two years ago)

there are still people i confuse, often due to name changes, eski-fucking-box.

mullygrubber (gaz), Tuesday, 20 January 2004 23:53 (twenty-two years ago)

This is the last planned name change. It has been Name Change Week here so I have had one new name every day. I will go back to being plain old @d@ml tomorrow, sometime around 3pm, like Cinderella after the ball...

the Eskibox (nordicskilla), Tuesday, 20 January 2004 23:59 (twenty-two years ago)

At first I figured that gygax! must be the actual Gygax since no one could ever be sad enough to pick suck a sadly enthusiastic name. It's okay. He thought (and may still think) that I'm Jon Williams. (Maybe I'm Howard Dean then...)

dean! (deangulberry), Wednesday, 21 January 2004 00:15 (twenty-two years ago)

the actual Gygax

???

the Eskibox (nordicskilla), Wednesday, 21 January 2004 00:18 (twenty-two years ago)

Gary, master of nerd-dom

pete s, Wednesday, 21 January 2004 00:21 (twenty-two years ago)

Mr "inventor of D&D", that is.

I confused all the Andrews (I still do sometimes). I thought everyone was amazingly cool and full of musical knowledge. For about 10 minutes. Then I got intimidated instead and slunk out of ILM quietly.

I thought momus was a font of knowledge. For about 10 minutes. Then I read the Vice thread and wanted to put my eyes out with a spoon (no offence meant, heh)

Mostly though I was relieved to find somewhere with actual intelligent conversations. I dont know if these have fallen by the wayside or I'm just ignoring meatier threads.

Trayce (trayce), Wednesday, 21 January 2004 00:25 (twenty-two years ago)

dean! (deangulberry), Wednesday, 21 January 2004 00:26 (twenty-two years ago)

I keep seeing Gary Gygax on Futurama (or was it the Simpsons?) rolling die to decide what he would do. heh.

Trayce (trayce), Wednesday, 21 January 2004 00:27 (twenty-two years ago)

Yes, thanks guy. I've always avoided that thread ... I'll check out the PQ record.

dean! (deangulberry), Wednesday, 21 January 2004 00:28 (twenty-two years ago)

i assumed mark s was a teenager.

tom west (thomp), Wednesday, 21 January 2004 00:31 (twenty-two years ago)

i always pictured mark s as being a cross between bernard black and the dalai lama

the surface noise (electricsound), Wednesday, 21 January 2004 00:31 (twenty-two years ago)

"wow, English people sure do have bad taste in music."

M Matos (M Matos), Wednesday, 21 January 2004 00:33 (twenty-two years ago)

which as it turns out is neither strange nor stupid

M Matos (M Matos), Wednesday, 21 January 2004 00:34 (twenty-two years ago)

haha

the Eskibox (nordicskilla), Wednesday, 21 January 2004 00:34 (twenty-two years ago)

And this was pre-Calum, one assumes.

the Eskibox (nordicskilla), Wednesday, 21 January 2004 00:34 (twenty-two years ago)

Calum is Scottish....

(Sorry Ally C, Madchen, Cozen, Ailsa, RJG etc)

Anna (Anna), Wednesday, 21 January 2004 00:38 (twenty-two years ago)

good point.

Figures (xpost)

dean! (deangulberry), Wednesday, 21 January 2004 00:41 (twenty-two years ago)

I thought ILM would be the perfect place to immerse myself in learning about and discussing music other than that of You Know Who. And voila, ten months after beginning to lurk here and nine months after beginning to post here, I'm the Ultimate Fangirl now! Life is so strange....

I also remember thinking Melissa W was about 32. Because she was one of the first people I interacted with on this forum. Now if that isn't an affirmation of how poised and mature she carries herself off online, I don't know what is.

I also had no idea who the "hipsters" of the world were. When I heard all these complaints about various bits of hipster paraphernalia on this forum, I had no idea why there was this huge ado about something I didn't see a single problem with. Now I think I have a clearer understanding of this world (though it still kinda eludes me still, because my regular life's too busy to bother with things like that).

As Sweet As Melody (Dee the Lurker), Wednesday, 21 January 2004 00:57 (twenty-two years ago)

Hey Ultmate Fangirl, the CD offer I made on your birthday thread stil stands if you want to drop me a line.

Anna (Anna), Wednesday, 21 January 2004 01:02 (twenty-two years ago)

Anna, dearie, I need to contact you! I will e-mail you later on in the evening!

(And now back to your regularly scheduled thread.)

As Sweet As Melody (Dee the Lurker), Wednesday, 21 January 2004 01:04 (twenty-two years ago)

There were probaly no midgets posting on this board.

‚¥‚ñ‚š (lenz), Wednesday, 21 January 2004 12:53 (twenty-two years ago)

two years pass...
everything here so, so OTM. especially adaml's posts.

gotta admit, even though i've been here long enough, i still get mixed up between long term posters (eg jess/jel etc), and there are some people and terms i can't figure out at all.

dog latin (dog latin), Saturday, 11 March 2006 03:19 (twenty years ago)

i assumed it wouldn't necessarily take over my life

killy (baby lenin pin), Saturday, 11 March 2006 05:44 (twenty years ago)

You poor soul.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Saturday, 11 March 2006 05:47 (twenty years ago)

I thought people actually loved music :/

Trayce (trayce), Saturday, 11 March 2006 06:09 (twenty years ago)

I used to be quite Internet-ignorant, so this was really the first message board I started contribute to (and it's still the only one), and I used to think it was kinda weird people spent so much time writing here. A year later I was in the Statscock top ten...

Tuomas (Tuomas), Saturday, 11 March 2006 08:58 (twenty years ago)

I thought back then I could start a topic on and esoteric topic, like, say, dinosaur porn, or Cop Rock, or recipes using tobacco, without first using the search function to see if someone had already started one.

ratty, Saturday, 11 March 2006 10:30 (twenty years ago)

This is the last planned name change.

-- the Eskibox (nordicskill...), January 21st, 2004.

hahaha!

electrogrouse (haitch), Saturday, 11 March 2006 10:51 (twenty years ago)

"hmm these people sure seem to know a lot about music"

"how good is the lack of emoticons and sigs and all that bullshit?!"

"er I'm not really sure I have anything to contribute here" - led to me not posting anything much for 18 months!

electrogrouse (haitch), Saturday, 11 March 2006 10:54 (twenty years ago)

I thought I could posess your souls.

Mr Jones (Mr Jones), Saturday, 11 March 2006 11:35 (twenty years ago)

I remember not really bothering with it because I assumed ILE was a longstanding inpenetrable clique and I wouldn't be a poster of any standing. It was like a month old at the time, and hardly anyone had met one another!

Matt DC (Matt DC), Saturday, 11 March 2006 12:16 (twenty years ago)

Also (and I've never told anyone this before) I thought the Pinefox was a girl and wondered if she'd be hot.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Saturday, 11 March 2006 12:18 (twenty years ago)

"why won't the stylesheet load?"

naus (Robert T), Saturday, 11 March 2006 12:27 (twenty years ago)

I was convinced that:

1. Ned was a slightly eccentric British expatriate in Southern Cal, a la The Loved One

2. ILM was professionally associated w/ The Village Voice

3. JBR was the other Jody Rosen, or vice versa (didn't read the FAQ)

4. Momus = Matmos = maker of music you've read about/never heard

5. "jess" was some kind of running in-joke (er, wait a minute...)

m coleman (lovebug starski), Saturday, 11 March 2006 12:40 (twenty years ago)

1. Ned was a slightly eccentric British expatriate in Southern Cal, a la The Loved One

Damn, that's a vision! :-) Instead I just turned out to be a feeb.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Saturday, 11 March 2006 15:03 (twenty years ago)

I thought Jess was a girl too. I thought Calum was misunderstood.

Curt1s St3ph3ns, Saturday, 11 March 2006 17:11 (twenty years ago)

That it was perfectly acceptable to start two or three threads a day without even searching to see if they'd already been done.

chap who would dare to be completely sober on the internet (chap), Saturday, 11 March 2006 17:14 (twenty years ago)

That I could post a load of old rubbish and it would just disappear into the ether, never to be googled or revived.

ailsa (ailsa), Saturday, 11 March 2006 17:16 (twenty years ago)

That the noize dudes wouldn't really be that mean u_u

killy (baby lenin pin), Saturday, 11 March 2006 17:22 (twenty years ago)
