Jan. 20 — NEW YORK (Reuters) - Award-winning newsman Jerry Nachman, the editor-in-chief of cable television network MSNBC and a former chief editor of the New York Post, has died of cancer, MSNBC said on Tuesday. He was 57.

MSNBC used to have two things going for it -- Nachman and Phil Donahue, two very outspoken guys in a format that doesn't encourage controversial opinion (except in a cartoonish Bill O'Reilly way) and generally looks down on dissent of any kind. Donahue got canned and Nachman died. When MSNBC started to become more headline-oriented and focused on celebrities, Jerry Nachman actually apologized on his show and said he'd been fighting to keep that from happening. Bold move -- but the network would have taken a shitload of flak if they fired him. He was very well-respected.
