Sundar- really good from the couple of tracks I gave a listen to. the contrast between glitches (made from skipping CDs as i recall) and the bittersweet keyboards is a winner.

right now I'm playing

evan parker- the snake decides.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Wednesday, 21 January 2004 22:59 (twenty-two years ago)

Winamp is giving me:

Trini Jacobs & Kevin Lyttle - Sexy Waist - Those who loved Turn Me On will also love this. Kev has got a woman in. She turns him on. He turns her on. She gets him rigid in his thighs. His voice is higher than hers, and when it gets really high it suddenly turns into the vocoder effect from 'Believe'. It is magic.
Various bits off Cassetteboy's Christmas album
The Singing Nun - Dominique - Why searching for foreign-language top 10 hits is a good thing, vol. 1
Severine - Un Banc, Un Arbre, Une Rue - Why searching for foreign-language top 10 hits is a good thing, vol. 2
Emma Bunton - Your Love On Me - Xylophones, bit similar to the theme to 'Love In The Afternoon' though I could be badly misremembering. Her album is gonna be the massive shock of the year...
Chris Isaak - Wicked Game - like this needs explanation
Stereolab - Margerine Rock - dunno their earlier stuff, so I'm not in a position to compare it, but this indie-disco-rocks my heart out
Various bits off the various (2) versions of the Scissor Sisters album

all i listened to today was the first disc of nuggets 2. the individual tracks are just beginning to stand out for me, except for 'my white bicycle,' which was the big hit of the first listen. when i discovered that track 16 was 'midnight to six man' by the pretty things, it was so right cos duane listens to them. i'd dedicate 'i see the rain' to the clientele. 'the first cut is the deepest' reminded me of tom's comment on how unusual it was that a ballad was the stand out track on this chart pop album.

Ian Johnson (orion), Saturday, 28 February 2004 20:58 (twenty-two years ago)

More festive Improvizz'04 goodness, in two parts for two hours.

Iproloo: four male vocalists (all with day-to-day jobs in choral music), of whom only one I'd previously heard in an improvised music context, turned in an unexpectedly lively performance, which among other things featured a water-bottle-fuelled & verging-on-choking gurgling solo from one of the tenors. The chap!

Then the trio of Jacques Di Donato - Mart Soo - Taavi Kerikmäe (=percussion, clarinet, wotnot + guitar + piano, electronics) abstracted, concrete'd, rocked & free-jazzed any which way they damn pleased.
Tomorrow's the last night of the festival.

t\'\'t (t\'\'t), Saturday, 28 February 2004 22:27 (twenty-two years ago)

Syl Johnson - Music to My Ears
Various - Superfly Soul

Valley of the Giants - S/T

Sean Carruthers (SeanC), Saturday, 28 February 2004 23:01 (twenty-two years ago)

t''t I am always jealous of anyone getting more improv action than me ;)

so today mark s was kind enough to allow me into his slsk files and got the grime. Burned a couple of discs.

ruff sqwad CDR is the 1xtra session plus 8 other tracks: I absolutely adored the 'rough' keyboards, the tabla sample killed me, the delivery was something I enjoyed even though I couldn't make out much.

sun city girls- dante's disneyland inferno CD2 from slsk: this is a very diff SGC alb, its charles gocher (their drummer) telling stories, poems over some pretty straight sounding backing. don't know how good it is, wasn't really listening very attentively, but liked what I heard.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Saturday, 28 February 2004 23:17 (twenty-two years ago)

Re: Alice Coltrane - apart from her first 4 or 5 solo albs, all of which are great in the way that Rockist Scientist describes (Sanders only plays soprano on 'Journey', which helps account for the becalmed nature of his playing), I also like v. much her appearances on 'Extensions' by McCoy Tyner (playing harp alongside Wayne Shorter, Gary Bartz, Ron Carter and Elvin Jones) and 'The Elements' by Joe Henderson, already mentioned by Toby (have you heard 'Multiple' by Henderson from around the same period, Toby - no Alice, but you get Dave Holland, Jack DeJohnette, James Blood Ulmer making a v. super-swampy post-Bitches Brew stew - tasty alb)

Andrew L (Andrew L), Saturday, 28 February 2004 23:31 (twenty-two years ago)

birdyak- aberration LP. this is hugh matcalfe wiht bob cobbing and the odd guest (lol coxhill on one track), so so good!

bugger all stars LP- bonzo bites back LP on bead. Like some of the restraint but couldn't quite connect with it.

Dewey redman- tarik LP on BYG with malachi and ed blackwell. has to be one of the underrated sessions in the BYG catalogue.

eugene van beethoven- sin funny 2LP, eugene & co doing songs and improv and the absurd and its excellent. total bargain.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Sunday, 29 February 2004 15:32 (twenty-two years ago)

I think I'd have to like Wilco first: Califone, Heron King Blues

wechsel garland - s/t
o.lamm - snow party

cozen (Cozen), Sunday, 29 February 2004 16:17 (twenty-two years ago)

The Yes remixes album is twelve of their tracks ("Tempus Fugit", "Arriving UFO", "Heart of the Sunrise", "Starship Trooper", "Awaken", "Sound Chaser", "Ritual", "Siberian Khatru", "5 Per Cent for Nothing", "No Opportunity Necessary, No Experience Needed" and "No Clowns") remixed and made electronica glitchy yadda yadda by The Verge. Apparently traditional Yes fans hate hate hate it, but I think you'd probably get something out of it!

Sean Carruthers (SeanC), Sunday, 29 February 2004 16:23 (twenty-two years ago)

Jerry the Nipper (Jerrynipper), Sunday, 29 February 2004 17:23 (twenty-two years ago)

i've just been reviewing a bunch of stuff sent for my website. There were some pretty good stuff.. Graham Coxon's single, which is ace. and the new Divine Comedy album. But I've just had to sit through the album by another band out of the Good Charlotte/Blink 182 mould.
Now listening to Ryan Adams.. dunno what to say for his record.

jellybean (jellybean), Sunday, 29 February 2004 17:40 (twenty-two years ago)

the new deerhoof now, 'milk man'. if quickspace are a mattress pumelled into the shape of a kid and held tight by string then this is similar but without the string.

cozen (Cozen), Sunday, 29 February 2004 17:42 (twenty-two years ago)

Now listening to Ryan Adams.. dunno what to say for his record.
"Man, Paul Westerberg's albums have been on a downward spiral for a while, but he's really outdone himself this time."

Sean Carruthers (SeanC), Sunday, 29 February 2004 17:53 (twenty-two years ago)

that's not fair. Come Feel Me Tremble is pretty decent.

I've been playing lots of stuff but I think A.R.E. Weapons' "Don't Be Scared" and "Right There's The Spot" by Basement Jaxx (officially the only song on Kish Kash I like in its entirety) deserve public shout-outs.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Sunday, 29 February 2004 18:01 (twenty-two years ago)

True enough, I suppose: I gave Come Feel Me Tremble a pass because his previous solo albums have progressively gotten so dull I just wanted to cry.

Sean Carruthers (SeanC), Sunday, 29 February 2004 18:06 (twenty-two years ago)

the one I was listening to was actually Rock N Roll. and it was so awful that I actually fell asleep while I was listening to it. Anyway back to the Graham Coxon single on repeat now (which is pretty difficult cos it's on vinyl and it involves getting up every 3 minutes to get the record to start again)

jellybean (jellybean), Sunday, 29 February 2004 18:20 (twenty-two years ago)

skipping it was a valid, valid act, Sean. I wouldn't have heard a note on the new one if not for a promo that came to my radio station. It's not astounding but way more enjoyable and light than shit like Suicane Gratification.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Sunday, 29 February 2004 18:22 (twenty-two years ago)

What do you think of that wechsel garland CD Cozen? I thought it was way too minimal.

Velocity Girl - Simpatico

The Yes remixes album is... ...remixed and made electronica glitchy yadda yadda by The Verge -- Ain't that actually Steve Howe's son?!?

Her VOICE makes my SKIN CRAWL: Múm, Summer Make Good

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Sunday, 29 February 2004 20:21 (twenty-two years ago)

The final (third) night of Improvizz'04 fest turned out the most varied yet.
The eight strong group performed in different combinations for 2 x 45 minutes - one of the many (dada-esque) highlights being the tireless Frenchman who suddenly grabbed, from heck-knows-where, a little book of fairy tales - in Estonian, yes - and commenced reading excerpts from it despite his fairly non-existent grasp of the phonetics of the language. Hilarious.
I sat in the last row, ears agape and eyes glued to the text on my knee - the damn translation the deadline of which is threatening to leave me sleepless for a few more night, evidently! But dragging the work along really proved the right thing to do. I got a large chunk of it translated, plus heard great music galore. Win-win!!

t\'\'t (t\'\'t), Monday, 1 March 2004 00:32 (twenty-two years ago)

Well if that guilty pleasure thread wasn't locked on ILM I'd note that "Georgia Dome" by the Ying Yang Twins would be the g.p. I've played most recently. Arguably, it shouldn't be a guilty pleasure cuz I'm totally fine with Bratmobile demanding that boys should lick their clit if their gonna lie and say dumb shit, but I guess my enthusiasm for playing this track (which in part is cuz I don't have a copy of its prequel "Get Low") makes me a little self-conscious.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Monday, 1 March 2004 00:42 (twenty-two years ago)

(and for those that don't know "Georgia Dome" is basically six minutes of enthusiastic demands for service and equally enthusiastic refusals of delivery)

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Monday, 1 March 2004 00:43 (twenty-two years ago)

Good undie, but the thing I d'led from SlSk seems to have nothing to do with the album listed on the AMG: Madvillian, Madvillainy
Way too jump-cutty; still, pretty good: Radio Palestine: Sounds Of The Eastern Mediterranean
