so who on this bitch is going to admit to having a Burberry garment? Of any kind?

MarkH (MarkH), Thursday, 22 January 2004 08:56 (twenty-two years ago)

massive dud. except for the scarves.

Adrian (Adrian Langston), Thursday, 22 January 2004 08:59 (twenty-two years ago)

it appears there is now Burberry fragrance.

well it had to happen.

MarkH (MarkH), Thursday, 22 January 2004 09:04 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh god no!

Pinkpanther (Pinkpanther), Thursday, 22 January 2004 09:19 (twenty-two years ago)

I think it is fair to say that the demographic of Burberry customers has changed significantly in the last few years. I don't own any Burberry clothes (or other Burberry items) myself incidentally.

MarkH (MarkH), Thursday, 22 January 2004 09:33 (twenty-two years ago)

yes, burberry is basically to the naughties what kappa was to the nineties. does anyone know how it started? i'm assuming there's a hip-hop angle somewhere, but i can't think of it...

CarsmileSteve (CarsmileSteve), Thursday, 22 January 2004 10:02 (twenty-two years ago)

"Burberry hatted" seems to be the worst. Markelby mentioned some "burberry hatted fifteen year olds", with a look of disgust, who were in the crowd at Kingsmeadow last Sat.

MarkH (MarkH), Thursday, 22 January 2004 10:06 (twenty-two years ago)

The other problem is that Burberry looks FUCKING RUBBISH regardless of who's actually wearing it. What next, tweed back in fashion in on the nation's estates?

Matt DC (Matt DC), Thursday, 22 January 2004 10:11 (twenty-two years ago)

Burberry is associated with footbal violence. Apparently it's s'posed to be some sort of indication that the person wearing it is part of a group. Apparently...

Pinkpanther (Pinkpanther), Thursday, 22 January 2004 10:21 (twenty-two years ago)

I think the worst I saw was a tight Burberry T-shirt.

MarkH (MarkH), Thursday, 22 January 2004 10:29 (twenty-two years ago)

You can get Burberry nappies. Jade from Big Brother had them on her kid. You can also get Burberry luggae - for the hoolie who wishes to travel in style, and tip off the police at the airport.

Dave B (daveb), Thursday, 22 January 2004 10:38 (twenty-two years ago)

Jade from Big Brother had them on her kid.

God if you ever needed a reason not to wear burberry...

Pinkpanther (Pinkpanther), Thursday, 22 January 2004 10:40 (twenty-two years ago)

I remember seeing a picture of Daniella Westbrook and her kid both kitted out head-to-toe in Burberry.

Alfie (Alfie), Thursday, 22 January 2004 11:45 (twenty-two years ago)

i rest my case!

Pinkpanther (Pinkpanther), Thursday, 22 January 2004 11:49 (twenty-two years ago)

how popular is Burberry outside of the UK?

MarkH (MarkH), Thursday, 22 January 2004 11:51 (twenty-two years ago)

jay-z mentions it in one of his songs with Beyonce & ludacris has aswell. Not sure what that says about the popularity of it.

Pinkpanther (Pinkpanther), Thursday, 22 January 2004 12:07 (twenty-two years ago)

Isn't Burberry popular with students in America?

The reason for the Burberry/football hooligan tie in was due to when, in the 70s, Liverpool and Villa hooligans went into Europe, they'd always bring back brand name wear, and then be decked out as such when they were skirmishing on Saturdays. So thugs supporting teams that were never going to get into Europe started wearing Burberry, being as it was a British brand name of quite some expense.

Say what you want about hooligans, they're always pretty well turned out.

Also, quite a few British rappers namecheck Burberry in their songs, probably because its a British thug label now really.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Thursday, 22 January 2004 12:25 (twenty-two years ago)

It's pretty popular over here among a few groups--WASPs and rappers for the most part.

teeny (teeny), Thursday, 22 January 2004 12:25 (twenty-two years ago)

Hahaha. Mark once broadcast to a living-room full of people that the kilt-esque skirt I was wearing was Burberry, and I got really embarrassed, even though I think he volunteered the information after someone complimented me on the skirt :)
NB: I am not a football hooligan, and it was not that odious plaid, but a heavy dark denim material and I bought it at a secondhand store because it's made well. Those are my excuses. I do not own any other Burberry, but plan to wear the skirt more since it's nice.

...x-post...

sgs (sgs), Thursday, 22 January 2004 12:26 (twenty-two years ago)

Isn't Louis Vuitton going the same way though? I recall a report on the news recently where a club banned all LV clothes/accessories for fear that those fashioning said items were trouble makers. A girl who had an LV bag got turned away.

Pinkpanther (Pinkpanther), Thursday, 22 January 2004 12:32 (twenty-two years ago)

oh for goodness' sake. I am sick of seeing LV, especially since going to Rome via Newark heloooo nouveau-riche italian-americans wtf.

teeny (teeny), Thursday, 22 January 2004 12:40 (twenty-two years ago)

haha, i bet!

Pinkpanther (Pinkpanther), Thursday, 22 January 2004 12:40 (twenty-two years ago)

Not that I give a shit about your net worth or ethnicity but for fuck's sake, go for the epi leather instead of the monogram EVERY SINGLE TIME.

teeny (teeny), Thursday, 22 January 2004 12:42 (twenty-two years ago)

You mean you didn't get one? ;-)

Pinkpanther (Pinkpanther), Thursday, 22 January 2004 12:47 (twenty-two years ago)

haha I almost bought a fake Murakami Vuitton tote from a gypsy cos I needed a bag, but it was so atrociously obviously fake that I couldn't handle it.

teeny (teeny), Thursday, 22 January 2004 12:51 (twenty-two years ago)

My boy bought me a fake LV bag from New York. I loved it, but it has been in the cupboard ever since!

Pinkpanther (Pinkpanther), Thursday, 22 January 2004 12:52 (twenty-two years ago)

Have an old-style Burberry trench I picked up in a charity shop for £15, which I wear often enough.

Since the relaunch of Burberry, it's taken a few years for the brand to niche with the big-hair crowd but they never, ever wear the plain old beige trench when they can get something which has been attacked by tartan. So the trench remains a preppy signifier.

My sister is into the Murakami Vuittons now. I can think of no greater indication that they're over. And no, she's no idea who Takashi Murakami is.

suzy (suzy), Thursday, 22 January 2004 12:58 (twenty-two years ago)

I have a fake Gucci bag my mum's boyfriend's father bought back from India. I love it, because it's made of really nice red leather, and the 'Gucci' logo is only tiny, so you can hide it.

So, are we anti-logo because of Naiomi Klien et al. Or because we all want to be individual, or because of an inbred-middle class distaste at flaunting wealth?

Anna (Anna), Thursday, 22 January 2004 12:59 (twenty-two years ago)

I cannot, cannot spell today

Anna (Anna), Thursday, 22 January 2004 12:59 (twenty-two years ago)

I've always felt big logos are me advertising them, whereas I prefer my clothes to advertise me. If they want ad space on me, then *they* can buy it.

suzy (suzy), Thursday, 22 January 2004 13:03 (twenty-two years ago)

I have a fake prada bag that I purchased from India, which I love. I would never say it was real though if anyone asked!

Pinkpanther (Pinkpanther), Thursday, 22 January 2004 13:24 (twenty-two years ago)

Like Suzy, I do have an old vintage Burberry trench but I only ever wear it to work.

El Diablo Robotico (Nicole), Thursday, 22 January 2004 13:26 (twenty-two years ago)

i have a fake murakami wallet, and i know who murakami is, and i find it amusing in a sort of simalucra.underground culture/sazimadat kind of way--also its my way of mocking takashi, who used to be dangerous and is now so safe i can pick up a rip off at a semi surburban mall.

i own no burberry.

anthony, Thursday, 22 January 2004 13:27 (twenty-two years ago)

Maybe she just likes it, Suzy.

(Sarah, sorry for embarrassing you. All the time)

Markelby (Mark C), Thursday, 22 January 2004 13:33 (twenty-two years ago)

hmm i'd like to do that thing where you turn the background into a picture (of this: http://www.destination-scotland.com/tartans/b/images/burberry.gif obv), but can't remember how to do the html, and also i don't want to piss everyone else off :)

CarsmileSteve (CarsmileSteve), Thursday, 22 January 2004 13:35 (twenty-two years ago)

the burberry thing also had something to do with the patent on their most famous pattern running out. i remember reading several years ago that the patent had been 100 or 200 years or whatever, and expired, so everyone could actually make exact replicas without getting in trouble.

i like the burberry fragrance, but will not buy it because the bottle has the darn plaid on it.

and, thinking about anna's question, i used to be way into brand name labels. in middle school (12-14 years old) i was all about the CK and the DKNY and polo and all that. it was something that i just stopped enjoying one day, and left behind as something childish or whatever and now i really don't like paying extra money to wear something that is advertising a brand. (like, if i had enough money for a classic burberry trench, i'd buy it, because it doesn't scream burberry. but not with the lining)

colette (a2lette), Thursday, 22 January 2004 13:49 (twenty-two years ago)

i was always into labels when I was younger, but now I just simply cannot afford to be especially when I can find the exact same thing in any high street shop for a fraction of the price.

Pinkpanther (Pinkpanther), Thursday, 22 January 2004 13:55 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh fuck, I've just realised that I'm wearing the Burberry cologne.

Alfie (Alfie), Thursday, 22 January 2004 14:04 (twenty-two years ago)

http://www.agendainc.com/brand.html

#6 is on up there.

Stuart (Stuart), Thursday, 22 January 2004 14:05 (twenty-two years ago)

Hold the phone
Three years later
Steeped out the swamp
With ten and a half gators
All around the world on the microphone
Leaving the booth smelling like Burberry cologne
Still riding chrome
Got bitches in the kitchen
Never home alone

teeny (teeny), Thursday, 22 January 2004 14:07 (twenty-two years ago)

Aw Mark, I think the embarrassment was more down to my self-consciousness :)

sgs (sgs), Thursday, 22 January 2004 14:26 (twenty-two years ago)

test2, Thursday, 22 January 2004 16:33 (twenty-two years ago)

So I will be the first to admit to having a Burberry tote/oversized purse. I quite often have to lug around two laptops, and it's surprising how many bags rip under that weight. So I love the Burberry one because it's tough enough to hold the weight without looking obviously like a computer bag- I can't stand those black padded rectangular laptop totes. yick.

lyra (lyra), Thursday, 22 January 2004 17:04 (twenty-two years ago)

Teeny, I was rapping that just now in my head, but the only part I know is "Burrrberrry colooooogne." I shall now attempt to rap the whole thing, Luda-stylee. For the record, I think Burberry is ugly.

Jeanne Fury (Jeanne Fury), Thursday, 22 January 2004 17:16 (twenty-two years ago)

i admit that i have a burberry scarf. what's the big deal? it was given to me by my father four or five years ago. i don't wear it very much lately, not because i like it any less but because i learned how much it cost. i have a terrible tendency to lose things in bars, and i would feel like an asshole if it went missing.

lauren (laurenp), Thursday, 22 January 2004 17:24 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm not too impressed with the cologne - I think I might be allergic to it. My Mum bought me some for my last birthday and I ran out of my usual stuff this morning so I gave it a whirl - I've been sneezing and have had a dull headache all day. There ain't no bitches in my kitchen either.

Alfie (Alfie), Thursday, 22 January 2004 17:27 (twenty-two years ago)

N. (nickdastoor), Thursday, 22 January 2004 17:39 (twenty-two years ago)

thanks, fucko.

teeny (teeny), Thursday, 22 January 2004 17:40 (twenty-two years ago)

Is that really annoying? I thought it was nice!

N. (nickdastoor), Thursday, 22 January 2004 17:41 (twenty-two years ago)

NICK FER PREZ-O-DENT

dean! (deangulberry), Thursday, 22 January 2004 17:42 (twenty-two years ago)

It definitely drives the anti-burberry point home.

dean! (deangulberry), Thursday, 22 January 2004 17:43 (twenty-two years ago)

Hasn't there been a Burberry fragrance for quite a while? I'm sure I've seen it in airport shops - bobbly glass bottle?

N. (nickdastoor), Thursday, 22 January 2004 17:45 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm highly amused, I have to admit. (I still think it's an ugly plaid.)

Jeanne Fury (Jeanne Fury), Thursday, 22 January 2004 17:45 (twenty-two years ago)

actually it is pretty cool, I take it back.

teeny (teeny), Thursday, 22 January 2004 18:02 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm not that crazy about Burberry, but this whole thread looks so cute now! Maybe it will convert me.

El Diablo Robotico (Nicole), Thursday, 22 January 2004 18:09 (twenty-two years ago)

Hasn't there been a Burberry fragrance for quite a while? I'm sure I've seen it in airport shops - bobbly glass bottle?

yes, there have been a few. basic male/female varieties, plus something called "weekend" that is assumably for your getaways to the country. the stuff for ladies is nasty, really sweet and floral - tuberose, perhaps?

lauren (laurenp), Thursday, 22 January 2004 18:48 (twenty-two years ago)

I have no burberry!

all threads should be individualised in this manner.

jel -- (jel), Thursday, 22 January 2004 18:49 (twenty-two years ago)

Bring on paisley threats, and some greek keys.

Stuart (Stuart), Thursday, 22 January 2004 18:51 (twenty-two years ago)

What's with all the hataz? Sure the Burberry plaid isn't as fashion ghetto as this year's (last year's) Pringle Argyle, but classic is as classic does.

Mary (Mary), Thursday, 22 January 2004 18:52 (twenty-two years ago)

i have a burberry trench coat, and i used to have a burberry scarf but i lost it in the wind. :(

phil-two (phil-two), Thursday, 22 January 2004 18:57 (twenty-two years ago)

classic is as classic does

right on, m.

lauren (laurenp), Thursday, 22 January 2004 19:09 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm totally split on Burberry. On the one hand, I followed the relaunch campaign through the Financial Times, and even without that I know hype and marketing perfectly well when I see it. Plus, DC street vendors were carrying things like sweatshirts screened with the Burberry tartan, which I guess is the local equivalent of the "mall Murakami" knockoffs you mention.

On the other hand, a couple years ago I bought a cashmere scarf that is a not-too-good Burberry knockoff, and when I go to the Virginia outlet mall that has a Burberry store I always stop in to see if they have something that I like and can afford. The pink version of their plaid is really pretty. And I want to get some fabric that reasonably approximates the camel tartan, to make myself a skirt...both for any remaining status and to taunt Burberry, because they probably don't want someone my size wearing their trademarks.

As for good basic trench coats, Burberry or other labels, those have become so classic that they will never go out of style.

j.lu (j.lu), Thursday, 22 January 2004 19:10 (twenty-two years ago)

This thread is officially awesome.

I'm really sick of Burberry scarves here in NY. I see about a million of them every day. Literally.

Aaron W (Aaron W), Thursday, 22 January 2004 19:38 (twenty-two years ago)

I have a scarf. It's pretty cozy and goes well with my black coat, but it is a bit of an odd feeling when I'm getting off the streetcar or something and the woman next to me has a matching bag, and then elsewhere on the car are two other scarves.

Kim (Kim), Friday, 23 January 2004 00:52 (twenty-two years ago)

the new fragrance, 'burberry brit', is a clear bottle with plaid on it. it smells like sugared almonds, and i like it. but not enough to buy it. maybe i'll just stop at sephora before going out and spray on their testers...

colette (a2lette), Friday, 23 January 2004 11:19 (twenty-two years ago)

Wow, I love it!

Pinkpanther (Pinkpanther), Friday, 23 January 2004 11:26 (twenty-two years ago)

Burberry is not the new Kappa, it's the new Stone Island (which was far more stylish imho)

In other words, hoolie style leaders started wearing it, and then it got appropriated by every little skinhead wannabe with their crap white trainers, adidas tracksuit bottoms tuucked into their socks and large branded sweatshirt. The burberry cap just tops it off and is usually as snide as they come. I'd estimate that 80% of the burberry stuff you see being worn on the hight street is fresh from Thailand's markets. You'll barely see the caps (or other burberry checks) on the main bad lads who simply want to blend in with the crowd yet be rather stylish. I have no idea what they're wearing now though, it's been a while since I went to a game with them present.

chris (chris), Friday, 23 January 2004 11:27 (twenty-two years ago)

Stone island is complete thug wear, obv burberry is going the same way.

Pinkpanther (Pinkpanther), Friday, 23 January 2004 11:31 (twenty-two years ago)

thug wear it may be, but it looks great

chris (chris), Friday, 23 January 2004 11:32 (twenty-two years ago)

The only problem is that if you see that little stone island emblem on someone's arm, you know exactly who is going to be in that particular item of clothing.

Pinkpanther (Pinkpanther), Friday, 23 January 2004 11:33 (twenty-two years ago)

yes, me! (actually the only Stone Island Jumper I had got tossed a while back as it was getting a bit tatty)

chris (chris), Friday, 23 January 2004 11:38 (twenty-two years ago)

Well obv that's what I meant! ;-)

Pinkpanther (Pinkpanther), Friday, 23 January 2004 11:45 (twenty-two years ago)

this is because you are a dirty casual brownie.

Hello

chris (chris), Friday, 23 January 2004 11:52 (twenty-two years ago)

the blue toggle coat from the london collection!

^O^

eriik, Friday, 23 January 2004 12:11 (twenty-two years ago)

nine months pass...
so maybe i don't really know what burberry actually looks like, but i'm so happy with my (possibly) ill conceived notion at what it might be that i'd rather not look it up. the background of this thread is disappointing though as i don't like plaid. this all has to do with an idea i hatched a few months ago to retire at 35 and wear white burberry slacks and sweater and buy a place near enough to a lake that i could go for some lakeside emersonian walks in my cool outfit and think about whatever early retirees think about.
am i retarded? i might even get a row boat.

firstworldman (firstworldman), Tuesday, 16 November 2004 07:34 (twenty-one years ago)

?? burberry IS the background.

phil-two (phil-two), Tuesday, 16 November 2004 07:46 (twenty-one years ago)

that's why i was disappointed... so what am i looking for? something dapper but calm. my dreams depend upon the answer.

firstworldman (firstworldman), Tuesday, 16 November 2004 08:02 (twenty-one years ago)

This is totally the ugliest thread on all of ILX.
