Celebrating Apple computers in my life: 11 glorious years, 1993 (Duo 230 Desktop / laptop) to 2004 (two iBooks and a desktop). Remembering the jump from my Atari 1040 ST to the Duo. I really felt like those monkeys in 2001, throwing a bone up into the sky and seeing it turn into Skylab.

Momus (Momus), Saturday, 24 January 2004 00:28 (twenty-two years ago)

When Cheney was Sec. of Defense, he tried to keep Apple from exporting Macs because then the Soviets would have AWESOME COMPUTING POWAH.

Leee Majors (Leee), Saturday, 24 January 2004 07:40 (twenty-two years ago)

of course the "best" computer would have to be one where you can't swap out components with ease, or install the operating system of your choice at the drop of a hat. That makes a lot of sense.

Broheems (diamond), Saturday, 24 January 2004 07:44 (twenty-two years ago)

When Cheney was Sec. of Defense, he tried to keep Apple from exporting Macs because then the Soviets would have AWESOME COMPUTING POWAH.

But he gave one to Bin Laden, who was fighting the Soviets at the time, and look what happened!

Momus (Momus), Saturday, 24 January 2004 09:17 (twenty-two years ago)

Waaahhh!!! I miss my Apple ///. I think my mother threw it out. That thing should have been in a museum.

the river fleet, Saturday, 24 January 2004 14:31 (twenty-two years ago)

Llahtuos Kcin (Nick Southall), Saturday, 24 January 2004 14:39 (twenty-two years ago)

RJG (RJG), Saturday, 24 January 2004 14:44 (twenty-two years ago)

The robots are coming.

Llahtuos Kcin (Nick Southall), Saturday, 24 January 2004 14:51 (twenty-two years ago)

I'll tell you who's coming. BillfuckingGates. And doesn't he sound just like BillfuckingGates? Google and PlayStation are good, he says. But he wants to knock them off and kick them out.

Asked whether Microsoft missed the boat in the field of search technology, Mr Gates admitted that he had to take the blame for losing out to Google.

"We took an approach that I now realise was wrong," he said.

"Our strategy was to do a good job on the 80% of common queries and ignore the other stuff."

Mr Gates claimed that Microsoft was better on the 80% of common queries, although Google was "pretty good" as well.

"But that's not what counts. It's the remaining 20% that counts... because that's where the quality perception is."

Google was "way better", he said, for people investigating a rare disease, exploring a hobby, or searching for a specific restaurant.

He praised the "high level of IQ" at Google's research team, but said "we will catch them".

Gotta catch 'em all, Bill! Why not Apple too? They're positioned right in that 'high level of IQ', 20% market you thought you could ignore, then realised you had to take over! Oh, but you did that already.

Momus (Momus), Saturday, 24 January 2004 17:49 (twenty-two years ago)

that's where the quality perception is

This just makes me think of Ford cars.

Momus (Momus), Saturday, 24 January 2004 19:37 (twenty-two years ago)

the first computer I ever really seriously used--you know, learn how it works, hack around, all that--was an apple II+. something like 18 years later I've returned to the apple fold with a g4 powerbook, and I find myself wondering what I was doing for the last 2 decades!
