That's not the devil in those British gas adverts, its Ricky Tomlinson.

Because George W Bush charges too much for telly appearances?

Any advertising creatives on thread like to explain themselves or have a pop others who come to a imagineering meeting and say, "what about using the Devil!"?

Don't ask me. I left the advertising industry 3 years ago.

Attendance at church is down, but belief in the Debbil is up! Jeez, you'd think we were going through a social crisis on the scale of the Black Death, wouldn't you?

maybe its the influence of Ozzy, the Prince of Darkness?

run it off (run it off), Sunday, 25 January 2004 14:36 (twenty-two years ago)

Ozzy can't even programme his own VCR or keep his kids from smoking dope. You really think he can control THE ENTIRE ADVERTISING INDUSTRY?

the river fleet, Sunday, 25 January 2004 14:37 (twenty-two years ago)

all you need to do to control the advertising industry is to be popular!

If religion is so flagging at the moment, why is religious imagery so popular? Why is the DaVinci Code so hot? I'd never even heard of it before, but my mum's churchy buddies are going crazy over it, despite the fact that it relies on mysterious organisations that self-respecting conspiracy buffs wrote off as hoaxes last century!

If religion is so flagging at the moment

In "Red" (Bush-supporting) America religion is very, very strong.

However, I always think that advertising's use of "devil" characters reflects the role of advertising -- maybe your superego is telling you you don't need whatever it is that he's flogging, but doesn't your ego/id really, really want it?
