let's discuss this film that had a muted, nearly invisible marketing
campaign, yet came out of nowhere to become the blockbuster hit of
the summer. i mean, yeah, it bore all the hallmarks of a cliched
hollywood cliched heist movie - but how about those eclectic casting
choices? ed norton as the ruthless criminal billionaire? seth green
as the hacker? mos def as the black guy? marky mark wahlberg as the
pokerfaced, monotone male lead? that guy from _lock, stock, and two
smoking barrels_ as the british guy?? charlize theron as the tight
blonde who inexplicably refuses to display her magnificent ass?!?

brilliant casting decisions all! discuss!

one of them is fixing to win a Golden Globe in roughly two hours, so her career is on an upswing to be sure.

What a shocking casting move to make Mos Def play The Black Guy! (AKA "Please name a movie where Mos Def didn't play 'The Black Guy'; even movies with other black people in them stuck him in 'The Black Guy' role.")

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 26 January 2004 01:04 (twenty-two years ago)

"Starring Jack Black as A Fat and Alan Cumming as A Gay"

Did we talk about the original (1970s-ish?) The Italian Job this summer? I saw it, and... um, it was cute, kind of all over the place, and fairly underwhelming. I did get a nice kick out of the part where they hack the computer with HUGE ASS EIGHT TRACKS. heh.

The new one, though, made me want a mini. I keep telling myself I love my little civic, but the minis are soooooo adorable. If they weren't ridiculously overpriced, I fear I would have traded in my civic for one. The adorable dashboard! The tinyness! The cute stripes on the roof! Awww.

A computer pedant writes: weren't they *nine*-track tapes?

I prefer my commericals freely broadcasted on my tv at home.

Dan I think that was squirlplis's point! But I agree, Mos Def was awesome in Ocean's 11.

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Monday, 26 January 2004 15:06 (twenty-two years ago)

Mos Def is the only good thing in Brown Sugar. What was that play he was in in London last year, I really wanted to see it. He's the black Woody Allen.

what is Napster anyway?

blueski, Monday, 28 January 2008 17:07 (eighteen years ago)

thirteen years pass...

No thread for the original, anyway seems Michael Caine’s cunning plan was to convert it back to a passenger bus in Blackpool.
