Home Remedies: Busted Foot

So, as I said on another thread that everyone ignored, I think I busted my foot something awful on a piece of public art.
It's swoll up so big I can barely get a shoe on it, and unless I have it up and on ice, which is impossible at work, it hurts like crazy. I can also barely walk.
What should I do?

ice is your friend. try an Ace bandage for support if you put pressure on it.

you can soak it in epsom salts at night which may reduce swelling and increase blood flow (remember to drink a lot of water).

There is a traditional olde worlde Cotswold rememdy should you be interested... basically, lift your leg up and place your foot over a knee-high object, such as a bench or something, then, take a blunt object, like say a rolling pin or brick, and set about bludgening your foot until it looks more like it's normal shape.

Whenever I sprained my ankle running I used to put my foot in a bucket of ice water at night and spell the alphabet with my foot, take a rest for a while, and do it again as much as I could tolerate. Then I could run on my foot. Which was probably a bad idea. Anyway, my point is that the bucket of ice water thing works very well.

I don't know what you could do at work but pop a shitload of ibuprofen and deal with it. Or go home if the pain is inhibiting your concentration.

If your foot is broken, you need to go to the doctor. To hell with this home remedy shit.

Jeanne Fury (Jeanne Fury), Monday, 26 January 2004 16:39 (twenty-two years ago)

it's not really broken broken (i can move my toes and ankle)
I'm applying pressure by wearing my sneaker real tight, but DAMN!
I'm so screwed. I had a fair bit of walking planned today. I guess I can cab it.

Have you ruled out gout?

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Monday, 26 January 2004 23:27 (twenty-two years ago)

don't use ice! at least after the first 24 hrs, that is. you gotta apply heat! plus mild pressure (tensor bandage), and you gotta elevate.

remember, MILD pressure.

And as far as whether or not your foot is broken goes you just need to follow the Happy Flowers guideline:
IF IT WAS BROKEN YOU'D BE SCREAMING!!!

When I've broken bones they haven't hurt for a few days after the accident. Admittedly I didn't have to walk on them.

ATTN HUCK

Don't be an asshole and visit yr nearest foot doctor ASAP. You might regret it if you don't. I speak from extensive experience. If you manage to get an infection, it could lead to gangrene.

I second that. I broke my foot and walked around on it for half a day. I could still move my toes etc so that's not a good diagnosis.

The Dr put it in a half-cast, like which is like a cast that fits on the back of your foot and leg and is held on with bandanges. After that, a firm elastic bandage. She said not to walk on it for 3 weeks while it was in the cast, it seemed like a long time but you really don't want to fuck up yr feet as it can lead to later ankle/knee/hip problems which hurt like hell and are v hard to fix.

Vicky and her broken-foot-for-6-days tales to thread!

Foot is all but better. Thanks for the advice, none of which I had opportunity to use, but considered nonetheless as I walked twelve blocks to a career defining interview.
